I used an engine hoist which lifted a yoke made from 2" aluminum square
tube that I had left over from wing and fuselage building. I had used
the square tubes as supports while jigging and building those parts. I
cut slots in both ends of the square tube to accept 1" ratchetcing web
straps and drilled a 1/2" hole vertically in the center of the square
tube for a lynch pin where the hook of the hoist attaches to it. I used
2 x 4 blocks at the wing's trailing edge and suspended the wing with the
ailerons and flaps off. The hoist provides vertical adjustability and
since it has roller casters, it can be moved with reasonable precision.
You have to establish the right balance point span-wise for the web
straps.
That being said, I trimmed a little at a time, many many times to creep
up on the final cut.

Thanks to all for the response on installing the wing. I had an engine hoist
at my previous location but don't have one available now so I will probably
use a combination of saw horse and table with cushions for protection.

Anyone know where I can get a BFR in a HDS? All dual, NO SOLO.
At this point , location is not an issue. I'll pay all instructional expenses,
at a premium. I need to be FAR compliant, but just. Contact off list for advice

Hi Phil,
I don't think it matters what sort of plane you get your BFR in. I
just got one (my first ever) in a C-150. That means I can now
legally do the first flight in my XL.
Contrary to many comments I have heard at FBOs, the BFR is not a
test. It is merely a little bit of continuing training for licensed
pilots. The notion is that training doesn't forever end when you
take your check ride.
I may need some actual time in a Zodiac to satisfy insurance
requirements, but that doesn't relate to the choice of equipment for the BFR.

Indeed. When I was shopping, they all wanted 5 hours of dual in a Zodiac
before I soloed. AVEMCO agreed to drop that to 3 hours of dual with a CFI
and 2 with the AMD factory test pilot once they saw his stats; I don't know
if the previous 3 being my BFR made a difference or not.

The lights in the photo are not Kuntzleman but are the LED wingtip Nav /
Strobe manufactured by GS-Air. See them at www.gs-air.com

Hi Dave
A couple of picts of combo lights. I was at the Arlington Flyin today and
noticed the lights on the Jabiru LSA A/C. They are the GS-Air/Kunzleman
variety. Take a look at the attached photos. If they are legal on the
Jabiru, I cannot believe they could not be mounted with at least as good
rearward visibility on the 601XL.

Has anyone successfully installed the Kuntzleman Streamline Combo nav/strobe
lights on a 601XL, and do the rear-facing white nav lights meet the FAA
approved light pattern? I was originally going to install the round nav
light in the rudder, but it adds more wiring and extra weight, so I'd rather
go with the combo system if I can. I like the Kuntzleman system because it
is lightweight, has a single strobe power pack in the fuselage, and only
draws about 3 to 4 amps total, including the strobes and LED nav lights.
However I can't figure out how to verify whether the rear-facing white LED
lights would meet the FAA approved light pattern. I haven't started on my
wings yet, (I will be starting soon), but when I have looked at the shape of
the wingtip on other XLs, it appears that the light mounting pads are
forward of the outermost curvature of the wingtip, so I am concerned that
the wingtip will block the view to the rear. If I understand it correctly,
the white lights must be visible 70 degrees to either side of a longitudinal
line through the center of the A/C at a distance of 1200 feet behind the
A/C, but there is no practical way for me to check this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the pics. I agree that it looks like they would be easily
visible from the rear on the Jabiru, but I think the Jabiru wingtips are a
lot more squared off than the 601XL. With the 601XL, the light pads appear
to be ahead of the outermost curvature of the wing. I came across some
notes I took last year when I was at AirVenture, where I had determined
after looking at completed 601XLs that I would probably need a light in the
tail. I may ask at the ZAC booth to see what they say, but right now I am
thinking about getting the Kuntzleman triple magnum system, which now has an
optional round tail light with a white LED and strobe combination. It may
not quite fit in the existing fiberglass fairing, but I am thinking about
making a custom fairing myself, (Jeff Small provided details for how to do a
fiberglass mold and layup). Besides, I like the idea of a third strobe -
you can never be too visible to other traffic. I'll decide when I am at
AirVenture in 2 weeks.

I have been reading this thread (and taking notes as well).
We shall be there from the 24 to the 4th.
This will be be my first time as well and I hope to have a chance to sneak
out and take in the "whole nine yards".
If I don't ..well stop by and say "Hi". I will be found in the East Exhibit Hanger

Ron,
Can I ask - did you use the stock ZAC supplied wingtip structure, including
the fiberglass fairing / light pad provided in the kit? I could certainly
be wrong, but when I looked at that structure from behind, I could not see
how the light would be visible from behind no matter where it was mounted on
the light pad of the fiberglass fairing.
Thanks,
Dave

Gentlemen, I have just used a CAD system and drew up what you are trying to
do.
It works with lots of clearance if the lights are at the furthest point out
and as high on the wing tip as you can get them. I also made mine
perpendicular
to earth so there will be good coverage above and below. I am using the
AeroFlash
units but the solution is still the same.

If anyone is curious I just updated my website with stuff about making the interior of my Zodiac. I used Confor Foam from Hitech Foams and Leather. You'll see they don't look professional, but I've got one more thing checked off the todo list! You can see the details and some lessons learned at my website, http://daniel.dempseyfamily.us
