Thanks Jay for the update.
Well yes I spoke to the Factory 2 days ago and asked about the new canopy latching
system and there should be Mod kits available after next month.
I suggested to them that they make the plans available for free as a good will
gesture as the canopy locking system appears to have been troublesome since concept.
People can still buy the parts from Zenith if they want to.. bit of give and take..
We will see what happens.. if enough people suggest that to them at the BBQ or
air show it may just happen.

the new 601 XL's manufactured by AMD in Eastman, GA. are using the new latching
mechanism between the seats at the rear of the console. it is much more positive
and less likely to be left partly latched. if i were in the build stage i
would definitely change to it.

Hey Darrell,
Like everyone else has said, the Olfa knife is the way to go. My only additional
comment is about the straightedge itself. Your local Ace Hardware sells long
pieces (8-10 feet) of aluminum flat stock for home improvement projects that
make a great straightedge. The one I use is about 1/8" thick by 1-1/4". It works
great and can be clamped along the table edge to keep your cuts nice and straight.
Make sure you mark it so it doesn't get confused with your regular 6061
stock. I don't know what alloy it is, but it's different.

Thanks for the responses. I have gone with just the XCOM and no separate intercom.
I have it all hooked up and can receive as I hear the guys flying above but
my intercom is not working. I cant hear myself or music input???? Any suggestions?
I have gone through the wiring again and it looks fine. When I hit the
PTT you can hear it transmit (sounds that way) but I still cannot hear myself.

Two thumbs up for the Olfa. Make sure you get the 800, nothing else
will do.
Also found a great edge deburring device from Home Depot for less
than $7 US (SKU 639272).
It's a little late in the game for me; I could have saved from 30-40
hours had I known about both tools from the get-go.

the final line and then doing a final cut along the line. Also if you
are doing a long straight cut try the Olfa P-800 knife and a straight

A little bit of water will dissolve in the gasohol. A little bit more will
cause the water/alcohol mixture to settle out, leaving a lower octane gasoline

Chris,
Its a nice idea to recommend that they offer the new latch, however some of us
builders have had no issues with the existing latch system, and it is contrary
to your statement that the latch has been troublesome since concept. I think
if it is built and operated correctly, it does the jopb well. If it is an item
that I forgot to check before take off, or did a hurried job in building the
plane, I have no one to blame but myself.
The new system gives options to those that want the option.

A cheap edge de-burring tool can be made by grinding a small V on the side of a
hack saw blade or similar.When you pull it at approx 90deg to the edge it chamfers
both edges at the same time.If you are keen you can then 320 wet/dry rub

Good question, and I'm not the right guy to ask. My guess would be steel; it
feels heavier than aluminum, and you'd want steel at least on the hook and
bolt for wear resistance.

Don't get me wrong, I like the new design better than the design I have with the
cables. But after looking at Jay's I don't think it is any less likely than
our to have one side unlatched, though you can see that it is unlatched a little
easier.
The plus with it is the lack of those cables that I have little doubt will leave
me latched in the plane sooner or later.

Use a magnet to determine what is steel. High grade stainless won't hold a magnet
and neither will aluminum.

I'm not sure I buy that at all. To have one side latched and one side
unlatched would require seriously deforming the canopy frame, either by
twisting or else stretching to the side - and to get the hook on the outside
of the bolt head would require a major effort to pull the latch closed,
something that would be immediately noticeable.
I do think the ability to easily confirm proper latch engagement visually or
by touch is a major advantage, since that's a lot harder with the old
design. Basically, the relevant checklist item becomes "Canopy - latch and
verify".

I'd suspect that the cable tension is one of those things that needs to be
checked at annual.

Between that, and the fully-locked position being low enough that you're not
likely to get your elbow underneath it, and the fact that there's some
friction as the hooks engage, I seriously doubt it'd be an issue.

Also found a great edge deburring device from Home Depot for
less than $7 US (SKU 639272).
It's a little late in the game for me; I could have saved from

Have you tried doing a first cut about a quarter of an inch out
from the final line and then doing a final cut along the line. Also if
you are doing a long straight cut try the Olfa P-800 knife and a
straight edge:

601XL. What's the easiest way to cut the long sheets of aluminum like
your nose piece on the rudder? The aviation tin snips seem to make the
edges ripple. Of course it might not be the snips. It could be the
operator. Any advice?

I find that you have to enter your zip code before the Home Depot site will
let you do anything.
Anyway I've attached a picture of SKU# 639272. Other vendors carry it too.
It's the one with the hollow yellow handle and the dog-leg tip where the
different size tips store in the handle. Here is a link to what looks like
