The only thing I'll try to talk you out if is buying a Falcon anything. In the
long run, heck even the short run, it will cost you more money than a good used
altimeter (sensitive or not).
To figure the correct price on any Falcon instrument take the cost and add the
cost of the one you will end up replacing it with. You save money by just skipping
the first step.

There's the link to their contact page with phone number, e-mail and snail mail
addresses. There is also a link on that page for their support forum which has
lots of info and they do respond quickly.
If you don't get a quick response please keep in mind that this is the week before
Oshkosh and if they are like other homebuilt vendors they have most if not
all of their staff getting ready for that.

My good friend and hangar mate Bob had the exact same response to everyone, even
on April 7th when we departed for Sun-N-Fun in his 601.
Still waiting on any information from the NTSB.
Let's all be safe on every flight.

Darrell, if your going to buy steam gauges I recommend you buy good ones. When
I built my XL I low balled and I ended up in the first year and a half replacing
most all the "cheap" gauges I originally installed. China does a lot of things
real good, but if their fighter planes use their gauges we will never have
anything to fear from them. I am building a RV-8a now and intend an all glass
panel. For what I paid for the "cheap" gauges and there more expensive replacements
I could have bought Garmin 850. Best wishes and blue sky's,

I tried to save you the call. The specs on the Dynon show a max operating temp
of 50 C. That is from the manual which is available at their website. I would
certainly hope that Dynon included auto off in the system. The alternative is
for the thing to burn itself up.

I bought most of my flight instruments from eBay. I paid about a third
of the retail cost. Most of them were pulled out of old Cessnas or
Pipers and sold in eBay auctions. The used RC Allan gyro horizon
lasted about two years and then the motor burned out but the new RC
Allan directional Gyro is still going strong. My ASI, VSI, turn and
bank and altimeter were all bought used and are all U.S. made and
still working fine. I've flown the plane about 330 hours over the last
four years.
I haven't heard much good about Falcon gauges but have no personal
experience with them.

Hi Jay,
I'm afraid you will have to measure the useable fuel in your
plane. This will vary from one plane to another and one tank to another.
Each tank will have its own maximum fuel it can hold before venting
it overboard. Also, the geometry of the fuel line with relation to
the tank will determine how much remains when the line stops delivering fuel.
One little point. You don't want the fuel line drawing fuel from the
absolute bottom of the tank since that is where water will accumulate.
Good luck,
Paul

Subject: | 601XL Fuel Sender / Gauge Questions |
I have a few questions regarding the 601XL fuel system:
* Photo Assembly Guide page 6-K-1b references VDO fuel gauge P/N
301-020, and explains how to connect the wiring from the sender unit to the
gauge. Are these gauges supposed to be part of the kit, (I cannot find them
and do not see them listed in the kit packing list)?
* Is it more reliable to run the fuel tank and fuel sender ground
wires directly to the ground buss vs. grounding them to the airframe, (I am
priming all faying surfaces so I am concerned about a poor ground)?
* Does anyone know if the VDO fuel senders will work for anything
other than the VDO fuel gauges? Will they work with any EIS systems?
Thanks,
Dave Van Lanen

AMD does not use vacuum gyro instruments, just electric ones. I don't know
the make and model off the top of my head. I'll look at the book later to
see if they're listed.

Subject: | Re: 601XL Fuel Sender / Gauge Questions |
Hi Dave,
My fuel kit included the VDO senders. If you
didn't get them you should contact ZAC for
further information. (you might check your packing list first . . . )
I think the best way to deal with the ground
question is to run a wire from the center portion
of the sender to the wing metal. You also need
to ground the tank. This should not present a
noise problem since the sender is very low power and doesn't change quickly.
You can use the VDO sender with nearly any
indicator. There are several different
specifications for the signals from fuel
senders. You just need to match the resistance
and direction of change in resistance from the
sender to the indicator. I suspect any EIS can
be programmed for any sender arrangement. If you
use "Steam" gauges you need to choose the proper
specification from a list of similar gauges.
Good luck,
Paul

The Senders come with the kit, the guages don't as Zenith don't know what type
of panel you have ie Glass does not need the VDO guages.. I got mine from the
USA.. do a google search for the part numbers..
Watch out for the correct Ohms.. They are matched VW senders..

One final thought - back up electronics with electronics. One of the reasons
we choose EFIS in the first place is to get away from mechanical gauges. So
why add them back into the mix?
Something like an MGL ALT-1 or ASI-1 from their 2.25 inch "Infinity" line
will run for more than an hour on a 9 volt "transistor" battery. And/or tie
them into the back-up supply for the Dynon.

I'm looking at doing this with MGL's Flight II (ASI, ALT, RPM and more in a
3 inch gauge) as a back-up to my MGL Enigma:

All-
Wow, lots of feedback on this one! There's no sense having a backup you
can't rely on, so I guess I'm in the market for a reliable used ASI and ALT.
Anyone with leads please contact me off-list.
Thanks.

Dave--
Fuel guages are not part of kit. You'll have to buy analog ones or use an
EIS.
The grounding=2C so long as it is secured properly=2C is just as good to a
irframe as to the ground buzz.
The VDO senders will drive EIS or analog guages

I have a few questions regarding the 601XL fuel system:
=A7 Photo Assembly Guide page 6-K-1b references VDO fuel gauge P/N 30
1-020=2C and explains how to connect the wiring from the sender unit to the
gauge. Are these gauges supposed to be part of the kit=2C (I cannot find
them and do not see them listed in the kit packing list)?
=A7 Is it more reliable to run the fuel tank and fuel sender ground w
ires directly to the ground buss vs. grounding them to the airframe=2C (I a
m priming all faying surfaces so I am concerned about a poor ground)?
=A7 Does anyone know if the VDO fuel senders will work for anything o
ther than the VDO fuel gauges? Will they work with any EIS systems?
Thanks=2C

I suppose I should have asked my question about ZAC supplied 15 gal fuel tanks.?
I don't know why those would be any different from mine.

Hi Jay,?
?
I'm afraid you will have to measure the useable fuel in your
plane. This will vary from one plane to another and one tank to another.?
?
Each tank will have its own maximum fuel it can hold before venting
it overboard. Also, the geometry of the fuel line with relation to
the tank will determine how much remains when the line stops delivering fuel.?
?
One little point. You don't want the fuel line drawing fuel from the
absolute bottom of the tank since that is where water will accumulate.?
?
Good luck,?

Gig,
Agreed. Hey dude, I checked out your website and the progress of your project.
Nice PLane! I like your IFR template for the COckpit Panel. I actually miss
building now. It was fun to have something to do after putting the kid and
wife to bed. Hope you are enjoying the project.
Cheers, Juan

of 50 C. That is from the manual which is available at their website. I would
certainly hope that Dynon included auto off in the system. The alternative is
for the thing to burn itself up.

the dynons don't do that. MOst planes I fly down here have galss panels
and they are tied down outside. they dont do that. Good Idea for the fan perhaps,
but its cheaper to call the manufacturer and find out if that is normal
course of businesws for the equipment. Option two is get better ventilation and
shade in the cabin while being stored.
