The renaming is. The changes are all things I had heard about at various other times. The one exception is the wing angle changes. I'd not heard of that one. [quote="jeffrey_davidson(at)earth"]On the AMD web site I found this: Redesigned in 2008 - the Zodiac CH 650: "The Zodiac CH 601 XL aircraft was redesigned for the Light Sport Aircraft category in 2004. The Zodiac CH 650 LS and LSi are different than the XL. The 650 series incorporates many changes that were made to the 601 series in Europe and around the world. The 650 series incorporates the best of everything. The Most noticeable difference is the canopy and rudder. Other changes includes lowering of the trailing edge of the wings (lowers the nose of the aircraft for better visibility), control changes (more balanced), tougher fuselage (good for flying schools), new canopy latching - locking system (easier to close and open the canopy), and a lot more." The canopy appears to offer some roll-over protection and the rudder is all-flying but looks different. Part of the canopy is fixed in place. Is this new or am I just catching up? I didn't know about the changed angle of incidence on the wing; I don't know what difference it'll make, but lowering the nose during the flare compared to the 601XL is probably a good thing. I do note that the 650LS/LSi is $15K more expensive than the last price on the AMD 601XL. I know you don't like to use it Jay, but there's a little switch there in the center of your panel that will bring that nose right down. :) DO NOT ARCHIVE jmaynard wrote: > On Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 08:00:41PM -0400, Jeff wrote: > > > Is this new or am I just catching up? > > > > > > This is the aircraft I posted pictures of in early June while I was at the > AMD factory. Hey guys, I was checking out the 650 at Oshkosh this past Saturday... the rear fuselage is more truss like rather than our boxed version with the addition of longerons placed in a Pratt Truss configuration. My sources tell me CH calls it a total redesign. CH is still in France and will not be at the dinner this year. According to AMD, this particular 650's wings were built in Canada. The top leading edge has a depression after the fuel tank, and each of the outboard nose ribs seem to be set lower on the spar creating a distinct ripple effect on the leading edge. I don't like the look, but it might add strength. Any one else up here, please look at it and tell me what you think--maybe it was the just the lighting on Saturday. The wing's rear spar attach is NOTICEABLY lower, yet the horizontal stab did not seem to be pitched any differently. The rudder now has a cap along with a trailing edge and different shape. Gig... I could not find the Garmin "596" information for you this weekend as they were unpacking, I am at Women Soar now, I will check again later this week... Eastern Daylight Time, larry@macsmachine.com writes: --> Zenith-List message posted by: LarryMcFarland <larry@macsmachine.com> Hi Jerry, The bolts inserted from the outside in is difficult, but you can weld a socket to an "L" handle that will enable the fixed position while turning the head from outside. See tool at the link, http://www.macsmachine.com/images/TJH/gearAW/full/gear-support-nut-holding-wr. gif A perhaps better solution suggested the use of a metal strip that had matching threaded holes that could be found and more easily got to from the outside. Pushing the bungees out of the way is also great fun while putting the nuts in, but I've done this three times and can do it in about 20-minutes now. I'm going to guess this was the problem in the couple of in-flight breakups that occurred. It's possible the XL has more aero-elasticity than the HD or HDS that may make cable tension more critical in the XL, not that you should ever have loose cables, but the XL may be less forgiving with the full 12' wing panels as opposed to the center wing and shorter outer panels of the HD and HDS. I'm thinking the XL may be more suited to push-pull tubes for controls as well as control surface balancing. Between the two of them, there'd probably never be a problem related to flutter. It's just a high performance plane. -------- Andy Shontz do not archive CH601XL - Corvair www.mykitlog.com/ashontz Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=195403#195403

Hello everyone, After a lot of research, gathering tools and saving money, I've had my heart set on the 601xl. Now that I'm ready to order my rudder kit, I see this thread on the 650sl and now I'm not sure which kit to order. I like everything about the xl. I know about the wing issues but I feel with the independent engineering testing from the ZBAG group, and everyone else looking into it, these issues (if there are any) will be resolved before I get that far along on my plane. With the xl I have all of your collective expertise, web page builds and the homebuilt video library to help me with my build and I really like the look of the xl. Obviously I don't know anything about the sl. I wouldn't have all the helpful resources as I would with the xl, but I also don't mind just jumping in and just go for it either. I think the sl looks a lot like the xl but I don't really like the looks of the new canopy design. The sl is the replacement for the xl so maybe that is the way to go? I'm sure the best idea would be to wait until more info comes out on the sl but I'm just really not that patient :) If you weren't already building (or have completed) an xl, which one would you order. Paul I used the supplied 1/4 inch fuel lines supplied with the 601XL kit from the wing to a center Andair fuel valve then bradied SS AN-6 to the carb. When tested at the carb inlet the fuel line and facet pump delivered approx. 20 gal/hr into an open fuel can. Both facet pumps performed the same. Its not a high performance plane, thats what he is trying to tyell people. Flutter is not a big deal on this plane as the design does not hit a resonance. Keep the cables tight per the plans and you should be fine. If you got a flutter, just slow it down and land and tighten the cables. I don't know where you got that this points the finger at the previous accidents. Scratching my head on that one. > >-------- >Andy Shontz > >do not archive > >CH601XL - Corvair >www.mykitlog.com/ashontz > > >Read this topic online here: > >http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=195403#195403 > >

Those who have "been there, done that", have you found it necessary to glue the wing root moulding to the wing skin upon final assembly? I've got a consistent 4mm gap where the rubber goes, and thought it might be trapped in place well enough without glue, but don't want to install a wing just to check.
