I plan to tape over the hinge but the gap on top is small enough I will
probably leave it alone. As far as being LSA compliant, the stall
requirements are without flaps (Vs not Vso). I would expect some improvement
on stall speed and climb rate with the wing root fairings, I will get as
accurate as possible before and after numbers.
I still have the flap drive assembly. Since I got it with the kit I don't
know what it cost or I would just cut the price in half. Can anyone suggest
a fair price?

Does anyone know if Zenith will continue to support the 601XL Zodiac?
For those of us who have only completed the tail and have the wing kit,
does anyone know if they will be compatible? In other words, can we
just upgrade the rear spar in the wing and then buy the fuselage kit?
Are they interchangeable?
Thanks in advance.

Of course they are going to continue to support the 601XL. Hell, they continue
to support the HD and HDS.
As far as interchangeability my bet is no but I'd ask Zenith. One of the big differenced
is the rudder so if you have already done that you will be missing one
of the big changes.
As far as switching to the 650 from the 601XL keep this in mind. Since I bought
my plans in 2002 there have been a number of updates and changes. In the whole
every one of these changes has made the 601XL a better plane. And whole the
650 will take what has been learned in the 601XL it will still be a new plane
and subject to a bunch more changes as the years go by.
Since you mention the rear spar I assume you are concerned with the accidents.
I've seen nor read nothing to make me think the 650 is in anyway a response by
Zenith to change anything to fix what may or may not be a problem. To support
that you will note that they didn't replace the aileron cables with push rods
which would be a easy and quickly added correction to what CH has cited as one
potential problem, i.e. loose cables.

One other thing though. I'd definitely go with the new 650 canopy design on a 601XL
if I hadn't already built that. And If I ever have to replace my canopy it
will be with the new design.

Strike what I said about interchangeability between the 601XL and the 650. I just
read the following in the Kitplane Blog.
> Well, what about the 601 XL youve completed (or are still completing)? No worries.
Gebhardt told us, We worked hard to make sure that the major portions that
we changed were retrofittable for the XL. The rudder has been swept back for
greater efficiency and a cleaner look. We changed a lot of little things to
make it easier to build that arent necessarily obvious. Theyll reduce build time,
and will remove confusion in reading the plans or looking at parts. Its more
streamlined and more clear.

Subject: | Re: Rudder pedals |
Hi Ron,
It is actually quite simple. You drill a 1/4 inch hole in the nose gear
tube, from front
to back, and insert an AN4 bolt with the following arrangement from
front to back:
head of bolt, washer, 1/4 inch sleeve bearing (Aircraft Spruce), washer,
nose gear tube,
washer, 1/4 inch sleeve bearing, washer, nylon stop nut.
The hole is in such a position that ,with the bearings installed, the
bearings rest evenly
front and back on the bearing bracket. You may have to add a shim in the
back
to achieve this. When installed without bungee chord, the
bearings will hold up the nose gear as a stop and the gear will freely
swivel.
When the bungee is installed, this will still be the case due to the
bearings
picking up the thrust by the bungee.
Important: 1. When the AN4 bolt is finally installed, use a bit of
sealer between the nose gear tube
and the two washers immediately next to the tube, so that moisture
cannot enter
the tube.
2. Make sure you do not torque the AN4 bolt too much so that the nose
gear tube
becomes out-of-round. The torque should be just that the entire arrangement
becomes snug against the tube.
I have seen several ways nose gears have been installed. Typically, the
two stubs
to which the rods are attached, slide on some sort of surface, be it
nylon or delrin or
(in old HD/HDS design) aluminum brackets. No such sliding surface is
needed anymore, since the bearings hold up the gear.
We have used this arrangement for more than 12 years, without any glitch
or problem.

I've been talking with Travis-at Zenith while Caleb was in Oshkosh.- Tr
avis told me that the new 650 canopy WILL fit the 601 body, but you will ha
ve to remove a small portion of the fuselage top in the area-right behind
the seats-(It will make it easier to access the luggage area).--It w
ill give you a better view from behind the aircraft if you look over your s
eats.- That was the main reason for the change.- It was driven from the
European Specs from what I understand.- Travis said they (Zenith) have n
ot-worked out the actual numbers as to what needs to be changed to use th
is in the 601 but they should know shortly.- I would suspect they will pu
t out a narrative on it when they know more.-
Hope this helps.

Vietnam Story
A teacher instructs her fifth-grade class to ask their parents to tell them a story
with a moral at the end.
The next day the kids come in and share their stories. My daddy told me about my
uncle Dave, says one boy. He was a pilot in Vietnam and had to bail out over
enemy territory with nothing but a flask of whiskey, a pistol, and a knife. He
drank the whiskey during the drop, then landed in the middle of 20 Charlies.
He shot 15, stabbed three, and killed the last two with his bare hands.
What is the moral of that horrible story? yelps the mortified teacher.
Stay away from Uncle Dave when hes drinking.
