I removed the flap handle bracket from the floor of my 701 when I put in an electric
system. I plugged the open rivet holes but was short one 5/32 rivet so that
hole was opened. I had forgotten about it. I could smell exhaust when flying.
I plugged that ONE hole and the exhaust smell went away.

Thanks to every one for their kind comments, especially to the ones who
suggested a through post flight inspection. When I removed the right
root wing inspection plate, I found a very slight fuel leak coming from
one of the fuel sender screws. It was caused by over tightening the
screw, causing the fiber washer to split. There was no outside evidence
of fuel leakage. The tank had been previously leak tested, so I am
reasonably sure it occurred on the first flight.
Now, all seriousness aside and please excuse my weak attempt at humor,
and please keep the flame throwers holstered, but this could have caused
an explosion which could have caused the wing to fold.

It might be getting caught in your ISPs spam filter. That happened to me once back
when I was reading from the digest instead of the web forum.

Lil Bruiser (Corvair powered CH 601XL) has actually broken the surly
bonds. Today, Scott Severen, test pilot for IndSU Aviation made about
a dozen high speed taxi runs and about half a dozen "crow hops", about
5 feet above the runway. He reported good power, and good control.
However, the CHTs maxed out, so we were reluctant to do an extended
test flight. Soon as I get that worked out, off we go!

Can I ask a dumb question? What is "RTV"? I can't find a decent definition
of it on the web.
Thanks,
Dave

I used a high temp red RTV designed for use with aluminum. It can be
found at most auto parts stores.
Don't use RTV designed for use as tub and shower caulk, this usually
contains acetic acid, which is corrosive to metals. You can usually
tell the difference by the smell, acetic acid has an acrid smell like
strong vinegar.

It's a silicone rubber sealant. RTV stands for room temperature
vulcanizing. There are several varieties sold by several companies for
various purposes from bathtub sealant to electrical assemblies to
engine adhesive-sealants. The stuff I used is designed for use as a
high temperature sealant for aluminum engine components. Locktite is
one of the brand names for this stuff.

RTVRTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing so it covers a huge range
of products that essentially "air cure" so you must choose the one that
fits the application,

Congratulations of the first flight.
I've wondered when seeing the first flight announcements if there are other pilots
like myself that have let their currency lapse and gotten rusty while building
their projects. And if so I'd love to hear about how you got ready. When
I started building I couldn't afford to keep flying and build too.
Again, WTG!
