From: "DaveG601XL" Way to go Matt!! I too have followed your website and the wonderfully detailed pictures. Keep up the good work, -------- David Gallagher 601 XL, first flight 7/24/08. I plugged the open rivet holes but was short one 5/32 rivet so that hole was opened. I had forgotten about it. I could smell exhaust when flying. I plugged that ONE hole and the exhaust smell went away. -------- Ron Lee Tucson, Arizona Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=198358#198358 ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 06:51:41 AM PST US Subject: Zenith-List: Post flight inspection N601EX From: "David Brown" Thanks to every one for their kind comments, especially to the ones who suggested a through post flight inspection. When I removed the right root wing inspection plate, I found a very slight fuel leak coming from one of the fuel sender screws. It was caused by over tightening the screw, causing the fiber washer to split. There was no outside evidence of fuel leakage. The tank had been previously leak tested, so I am reasonably sure it occurred on the first flight. Now, all seriousness aside and please excuse my weak attempt at humor, and please keep the flame throwers holstered, but this could have caused an explosion which could have caused the wing to fold. I was, then it stopped. Did I do something inadvertently? Today, Scott Severen, test pilot for IndSU Aviation made about a dozen high speed taxi runs and about half a dozen "crow hops", about 5 feet above the runway. He reported good power, and good control. However, the CHTs maxed out, so we were reluctant to do an extended test flight. Soon as I get that worked out, off we go! It can be found at most auto parts stores. Don't use RTV designed for use as tub and shower caulk, this usually contains acetic acid, which is corrosive to metals. You can usually tell the difference by the smell, acetic acid has an acrid smell like strong vinegar. ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 03:52:14 PM PST US From: "Craig Payne" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: RTV Room Temperature Vulcanization, such as with silicone rubber, by using a chemical instead of heat -- Craig ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 04:21:53 PM PST US From: Bryan Martin Subject: Re: Zenith-List: RTV It's a silicone rubber sealant. RTV stands for room temperature vulcanizing. There are several varieties sold by several companies for various purposes from bathtub sealant to electrical assemblies to engine adhesive-sealants. The stuff I used is designed for use as a high temperature sealant for aluminum engine components. Locktite is one of the brand names for this stuff. From: "leinad" Congratulations of the first flight. I've wondered when seeing the first flight announcements if there are other pilots like myself that have let their currency lapse and gotten rusty while building their projects. And if so I'd love to hear about how you got ready. When I started building I couldn't afford to keep flying and build too. Again, WTG!
