Hi Darrell,
The 4 factory new engines which seem to be popular on the XL include
the two you mentioned (O-200, and O235),the Rotax 912S, and Jabiru
3300. The first three all produce around 100 horsepower while the
Jabiru is more powerful at either 120 or 130 depending on who you
ask. The Lycoming and Continental engines seem to come in around 100
pounds heavier than the other two when you are all finished. I have
not been able to find the reason for that, but I think it might
involve the amount of equipment included in the factory weight
quote. I think the Lycoming and Continental don't include
accessories included in the Rotax and Jabiru specs like starters,
alternators, and magnetos.
As you would expect, the performance generally shown for the three
100 HP engines is considerably less than the Jabiru equipped planes.
I have heard rumors that the Rotax reliability may not be
wonderful. However, the other three seem to have very good
reputations in that area.
I chose the Jabiru for my plane since it provides a distinct
performance advantage. Others may choose other engines and I don't
have any reason to say they are making a mistake.

Both my fuel senders froze and I needed to free them. In my original plans, the
senders were attached to the top of the tank. There was a drain hole I could
poke a wire in, but to see what I was doing, I'd have to be able to look in
through the fill tube 4 feet away on the other side of the wing.
After trying to borrow a boroscope, I was seriously thought about renting or buying
one. As I explained to my wife what it was, I used the phrase "camera on
a stick." But since it's a major purchase, I held off a couple days.
In that time I realized instead of a boroscope, I could use a CAMERA on a STICK. I already had a cheapo HaborFreight camera with limited night vision capabilities - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=98813
It fit in the filler neck and I poked it down far enough to see the float. Then
with the monitor on the other side of the wing, I was able feed my fish tape
into the drain hole and jiggle the float. Viola!
Months of fretting solved by 30 seconds of work.
I'm not sure is good enough to be included on http://www.ch601.org/tools.htm
What does everyone think?

Kevin Kinney

Hi Kevin,
Great idea!
I've been thinking of doing a similar thing with a web-cam attached
to a laptop computer. Alas, I haven't found an application for this trick yet.
Looking at your Harbor Freight camera it seems it wants to connect to
a TV monitor. I'm sure this works, but then you have to figure out
what to do with the monitor when it is not working on this task.
Keep up the good work.

Gig, I really did not compare for fit. With enough spring steel and fiberglass
anything will fit anything. Maybe someone else has tried to fit Van pants on a
XL, but I haven't. I would post a question thread and see if anybody has made
that leap. ?Best of luck, Bill

Are they the standard for the RV8A and do they fit on the 601XL? Is so I can
just call Vans.

Gig,
If memory serves me well, Van's RV flat bar gear wheel pants will fit. They are
about 260.00 for a pair of mains and 140.00 for the nose. William used a pair
for his 601, at least that's what they looked like when I helped him deliver
the plane to Nitron last January.

Team Rocket sells these. Haven't tried them. $225 which may be per pant.
"The F-1 wheelpants are sleek pressure recovery pants that are used with the
500-5 wheel and tires. Our intersection fairings fit these pants perfectly.
If you want your RV to go faster and look better, the F-1 wheelpants are for
you. We offer formed mounting brackets which fit the Rocket or the RV-8
which may be purchased separately for $35.00. The see-thru design allows for
an easier mounting process."
Go to www.teamrocketaircraft.com then click on "Catalog" then choose
"fiberglass" under category and look for "Rocket Wheel Pants"

Subject: | Safe ZODIAC XL flight behind a Corvair |
Here is a much needed news flash.
Today two pilots entered an experimental Zenith 601XL airplane powered by a Corvair
2700 engine, left the ground, and had a safe flight which included 3 intentional
landings and about an hour or so of flying. The amazing thing is the
Zodiac Canopy remained latched (original design), the wings also remained in
their original design location and the engine purred like a kitten. At no time
did we fly beyond the maneuvering speed of the aircraft
I want to publicly thank Dr. Gary Ray for a very enjoyable flight and conversation.
This is the very same airplane I am scratch building and it was just what I needed
to get me back at it.
