Subject: | Centre spar bolt problem |
Hi
I'm plans building a 601XL and am new to the list but need some info on
the 6 AN4-15A spar bolts in plan 6W4 (issue 10/04). I find the bolt
grip length with the 2 required washers to be about 0.5mm too long. It
is satisfactory if a further washer is added under the bolt head but
with only 2 washers the nut can tighten onto the grip without properly
holding the spar together. Has any other plans builder had this problem
and is another washer ok?

Hi Greg,
I'm a kit builder, but I think the issue you raise applies to all
versions of the XL.
The plans are not the final authority on bolt selection for any part
of the plane. This is especially true in the main spar attach
section since the two outer bolts on each wing must go through the
uprights and the 4 inner bolts do not.
I think the best way to deal with the bolt length question is to use
what ever bolt length gives you the correct joint -- without regard
for the plans specification. In case of the wing attach bolts, this
means you will probably need 8 of one length and 4 of a longer
length. If your particular plane winds up using a different
arrangement of bolts then that is fine.
Even for kit builders, purchasing additional AN bolts is very
easy. I get mine from Aircraft Spruce, but there are several other
fine suppliers of these parts. They are not very expensive, so
having a few extra left over is not a big deal. It pays each builder
- even kit builders - to learn the proper designation for each type
of bolt. The biggest issue is the designation for drilling the bolts
for safety wire or cotter pins. For a bolt with no drilled holes the
"A" designation is required.
Good luck,
Paul

In this application, I would want the shank (unthreaded portion) to go
all the way through the spar. And a little shank sticking out. Add
washers as necessary. Be SURE that the nut torques against the washers
and does not bottom on the shank.

Three washers is acceptable, I believe four is the maximum allowable.
As I recall, I used three washers on the eight inboard bolts but only
two on the four outboard bolts that go through the uprights. The extra
washers were installed under the bolt heads.

Subject: | Re: RE: fuel system question |
The gascolator should be mounted at the lowest point in the system.
The lines from the gas tanks should slope straight downhill to the
gascolator and then the line from the gascolator should run uphill to
the engine. The lines should be arranged so that any water in the
system can run downhill to settle in the gascolator. There should be
no dips in the lines that can allow water to settle out in the line.
There should be a quick drain valve in the bottom of the gascolator to
check for water during preflight.
A low wing airplane should definitely have some way to select the gas
tanks individually, either individual valves for each tank or a tank
selector valve. Running on both tanks should be avoided because, in a
low fuel situation, it is possible to suck air from an empty tank and
starve the engine even if the other tank still has fuel in it. This
situation is unlikely in a high wing plane due to the head pressure of
the fuel in the tanks. The original plans for the 601XL and the wing
tank option for the HD called for a separate valve for each tank. My
plane is set up this way and it works fine you just have to remember
to turn on one tank before turning off the other. A fuel selector
valve adds a little bit of convenience but generally costs more than
individual valves.
Even if you have an engine driven fuel pump, I would recommend that
you install an electric boost pump in a low wing airplane. A good
place for it is near the outlet of the gascolator at the low point of
the system. This should ensure that the boost pump inlet is always
gravity fed so it doesn't have to suck fuel uphill. During climb out
after takeoff, an engine driven fuel pump on a low wing plane will
probably be sucking fuel uphill. On a very hot day, or with a hot
engine compartment, this can lead to vapor lock and loss of power at
the worst possible time, especially if you are burning auto gas. A
boost will prevent this situation.

In trying to complete an older 601 project, where can a schematic or flow
diagram be found for the wing tanks, fuel pump and that funny looking
rectangular gascolator with a total of 4 tapped holes?? I'm confused and not
making much headway helping my buddy. Thanks.

Here is the documentation that I got with my wing locker tank kits for my

I have 2 gasolators in my system. The one you've mentioned goes on the
firewall. My gasolator had an inlet that used as the pass through of the
firewall, an outlet out of the top and a drain. If yours has 2 outlets, one
could be used as a fuel return to help mitigate vapor lock. My second
gasolator is called out(very poorly) on the drawings I attached. I have
this one mounted behind the seats in the fuselage. If you are using a
header tank with the wing tanks you need both because you will have 2 low
points in your fuel system.

Dick, I just went and looked at my fuel system. The 4 hole funny looking gasolator
that you talked about is the one supplied with the locker tank option. You
have a drain hole, an outlet hole, and 2 inlets, one for each tank. I have
this one mounted behind the pilot seat. This is the lowest point in the fuel
lines from the locker tanks. There is a second gasolator supplied with the original
kit and it mounts to the bottom of the firewall and has three holes; one
inlet, one outlet, and the drain.
Hope this helps
Sorry about my confusion.

Back in the old days when I bought my HD kit, there wasn't much of a fuel
system design available. The intention was to have a header tank only.
Standard brass fittings controlled the gravity fed line to the carburetor.
The Zenith homemade gascolator you describe allowed for a 110 fuel drain
plus lines in and out. I have two if you need more! Even after ZAC started
selling wing and leading edge tanks, it was a while before ZAC provided a
fuel system design. I ended up designing mine and sending it snail mail for
review by Chris Heintz. Chip Erwin's Chech Airworks also provided their
design. Now, you can find the latest thinking on the Zenith web site in the
builder's area. Depending on the age of the project, there may not have
been any fuel system design provided with the kit, particularly if it is an
HD or HDS. There is a lot of fuel system design information and a gauge of
how hard it was to design your own in the Zenith List archives. Many
builders end up using the Andair selector valve.

Subject: | Glare shield coverings |
So what have people covered their glare shields (forward skin under the
windscreen) with? I'd like something tougher than paint but that will stand
up in the sun. But not something with a nap like carpet that will be hard to
clean. One recommendation was auto rock guard paint. I'd cover it in thin
vinyl or plastic if I could count on it lasting. I'm going to experiment on
a piece of test metal with black Plasti-dip (the stuff used to coat handles
on tools). I don't think it should make a difference but this is on a 701.
Other suggestions?
