I'm afraid pictures would be anticlimatic. I had a piece of 1/2" x 1/8" steel
bar and I tyrap'd the camera to the end. After a couple attempts, I got the bend
in the bar right and the camera positioned correctly.
Then I set the monitor (OK a small TV, but "monitor" sounds more techy) so I could
see it from the underside of the wing. Finally, I stuck some fish tape in
the drain hole and manipulated the float.
On the first, I just had to knock the float arm loose and the sender started working.
Sadly on the second, I had to unzip the wing and replace the sender.
Fun fact - When trying to remove the drilled rivet bodies from a wing, lying under
it while someone tips the wing forward is NOT a good place to be. Aluminum
shavings end up in the DARNEDEST places.
I'll try to add a few pictures this evening.

Kevin Kinney
P.S. Before you add fuel for the first time, stuff a vacuum down your gas tank.
I was AMAZED at the #$%^ it sucked up.

Where's your sender, on the top of the tank? Can you mount it on the side in the
middle of a rib lightening hole that you can get to from the access plate?
I've been wondering about how hard it would be to take a tank out if need be. Be
nice to know that the ONLY reason the tank would ever need to be removed if
it was outright leaking along a welded seam. More reason to weld the tanks than
use Pro-Seal, at least in the XL. No good way to get at the tank if you really
need it out without ripping the wing apart.

Well we have had a major accomplishment. Our 601 HDS is
on the gear and I got to set in it for the first time and
make airplane noises.
However, when I put my feet on the pedals they contact the arch of
my foot and the ball of my big toe hits the toe brake bar
. When I push the pedal in a natural motion to move the
rudder, the brake is depressed. My heal rests on the
floor, between the rudder pedal and the crossing
stiffening member. Is this the normal set up? We dont
have the seat cushions in yet, so that will elevate the
pilot forward and up some, but I dont think the geometry
of the knee will change much. I am five eleven (on a good
day) and my partner is over six feet. The general feel is
much bigger than I thought it would be. It seems much
roomier than a 150 and the nose is much higher when you
sit in it without cushions. We could easily adjust the
rudders pedals now, much harder later. My question is, does this
observation mean we have an issue or am I missing
something. Thanks phill

I had the same problem. My solution was to add blocks to the rudder pedal so as
not to be depressing the brakes when operating the rudder pedals. I am surprised
they haven't fixed that by now.

Phill,=0A-=0AI have an HDS that has almost 4 years of flying on it.- I
am 6'1" and my toes hit the brakes in there normal position.- I did a sim
ple fix when I was building the plane.- I cut the toe brake links off and
relocated them forward and welded them in place.- I then shotened and re

room between my foot and the toe brake bar.- Make sure you don't get them
too far forward so that your toes hit the firewall.-=0A-=0AGood Luck,

I just reread your message and decided I need to elaborate a bit. My
rudder pedals are as far forward as ZAC recommended. With rudder in
neutral, the toe brake bar is angled forward 15 degrees. My heels rest
on the heel rest.

If you do not have he brakes bled and under pressure, you are making an issue
out of nothing. Set the brakes and pedal to the distance desired, then bleed
and apply pressure. you will find it takes lots of forward foot motion to apply
brakes. Alot more than you think, which works well when applying peddle work
and brake work. It is not as touchy as you think.
Flight it first, then reset it.

Gary Ray,
I got different units from Zenith
226-002 FUEL TANK SENDER
I think they come from a Volkswagen. Now I wonder if those seals have the same
problem as you just experienced. They are in the tanks and sealed with MC-236-b1/2
Tank Sealant from Vans Aircraft.
After we flew I thought about testing because you can't find any mogas around here
without ethanol. At least that is what one of the fuel truck drivers told
me.
If anyone knows if these parts are good for use with mogas, please chime in.

Ryan,
I used a small arbor press and placed rivet tools from one of the squeezers in
line with each other by machining some pieces to hold them. A piece of masking
tape to hold the rivet head in place and just set it against the bottom cupped
rivet face and close up the press. Notice the piece of rubber around the upper
rivet face, that helps keep all the metals together before the upper face
touches the rivet to for the shop head.
Here is a tiny url to my kitlog site around 10/30/2006 with pictures of what
I am talking about.

Subject: | Re: on gear, Do we have pedal issues? |
Phill,
I found out about the issue when I was test flying a 601HD in Canada
while I was building mine. I was told to move my heels back and put my
toes on the pivot point so I would not be on the brakes when I landed.
When I got he brake pedals I saw that the balls of my feet would be on
the brakes so I added 1 1/2 inches to the pedal. The next year at
Oshkosh at the builders dinner I went over to Chris Hientz and put my
foot next to his. A hah I said, he asked what I was doing, I told him I
found why the pedals are too small. I have a size 12 foot and he must
have about a size 7. With the extra length I can easily control the
rudder and brakes separately.
