Hey guys,
I have a crashed backup hard drive that I "DID NOT" copy back onto my new computer.
As fate would have it, all of my construction photos are on it!
As of now, getting the information off is around $900.
Any ideas beside make sure you have multiple back ups in the future?

Hi Rich,
Let me make a few silly comments on your situation. They may help,
or they may not.
First, the pictures you "Lost" may not really be needed. The primary
purpose of such photos is to convince your inspector or DAR that you
actually built the plane. Other parts of the proof include your
build log which documents (hopefully in brief) the steps you took to
build your plane. I'm no expert on whether or not these pictures are
really necessary to get your E-AB airworthiness certificate. Perhaps
a conversation with your local FSDO can resolve this question. Even
the FAA understands the reality of lost data on broken computers.
Now for the really silly comment. I remember when IBM came out with
the PC/XT. This was the first consumer computer with a hard disk
drive rather than just floppy disks. The XT had a whole 10 megabytes
of storage - perhaps 1 megabyte of which was consumed by Microsoft's
fat operating system (which did not include Windows). One of the big
computer experts of the time suggested it was irresponsible of
consumers to have computers with such a huge storage capacity since
they just didn't have the know-how and responsibility to have so much
data in one place. (The cited 10 megabytes is perhaps 1 ten
thousandth the size of the typical PC hard drive today.)

Hi All
Where are people putting their static ports if you are using the Dynon systems.
The wing pitot and Angle of Attack are out on the wing, some builders put the
static at the rear fuse area. Whats the best location ?? I dont want to end
up with a swiss cheese aircraft. Where is the static ports on an AMD?
Handing Over.

AMD uses a single blade pitot/static port most of the way out on the left

I didn't look at the EFIS-equipped ones that closely, but I expect that they
use an AOA sensor out on the wing as well.

I posed this question some months ago (could be a year or more - time
flies!) and got some very helpful replies, so they should be in the archive.
I followed Mark Townsend's advice a put mine 150 mm back from the firewall
rivet line and 150mm down from the Longerons. I haven't flown yet, so I
can't speak from experience.

A lot depends on where it's located and it's condition. Generally,
"crashed" just means the disk has enough bad sectors that the file
system software gives up, or that it has a corrupted file and so won't
boot. If either of these is the case, the majority of your data should
be easily recoverable.
If the disk is in really bad shape, you might have to buy recovery
software - I'm sure it can be had for far less than $900.
If the disk is still in the original computer, you should be able to
book off a CD and copy the data to a thumb drive. I think the Windows
recovery CD will allow this, but I'm a Linux guy so I'd just boot a
Linux disk (Ubuntu probably) and do the same thing, copy to a thumb
drive or over the network.
If this disk is removed from a computer, get an external USB enclosure
and new drive bare drive. Mount the old drive in the enclosure, recover
files, remove old disk, put in new drive and start backing things up!
Good Luck,
Ron

One caution: Before you try running the drive again, MAKE SURE that the
drive itself did not fail. If it did (the disk was not spinning when it was
done), then attempting to run it again may well destroy any ability the
recovery service has to retrieve the data. If the machine crashed and would
not reboot, but the drive was spinning, then software fixes stand a
reasonable chance.

I am using my Lift reserve indicator for airspeed indication and installed
static ports on either side of the fuselage above and rearward of the vent
ducts. Basically as close to the upper longeron and the rear most vertical
angle brace as I could get it. I haven't flown yet but in fast taxi testing
with calm winds the altimeter is accurate and stable and airspeed indication
tracks my GPS groundspeed. I should have flight data in the next couple
weeks.

I started and drilled all my holes exclusively with a 1/2" unibit. I
have a canopy from Toddscanopies so it may be stronger that the one ZAC
used to supply, but I have a separate windshield so I drilled twice the
number of holes as a stock canopy and never a hint of a crack anywhere.
The design of the step drill makes it perfect for plastic. Other's
results may vary, but I would never consider using anything other than a
unibit.

Subject: | Re: Detroit FSDO Inspection |
Sorry for the confusion. My friend built a Fisher Tiger Moth which is 80% of the
size of an actual Tiger Moth. When he sent the airworthiness application and
associated paperwork to the FSDO the airplane was ready to fly and had been
ground run and taxied.
I had gotten the impression from my research that getting the FAA to come out in
a timely manner was almost impossible and indeed the office responsible for
such certification is located in Cleveland. I was going to hire a designated
inspector but after working with this fellow and another from Detroit on a Field
Approval for my Champ I think I'll try to go with them.

Other's
results may vary, but I would never consider using anything other than a
unibit.

I agree. The melted material will "pile up" around the edges of
the hole and the size of the hole will be inconsistent. I started each
hole with a 1/8" plexiglass bit I got from ACS and then opened them up
with a unibit in a variable speed drill. I actually tried a 1/4"
plexiglass bit I got at the same time from ACS, but it seemed to want to
grab the plexiglass, so I went with the unibit.

I don't think you can consistently "burn" correctly sized
cylindrical holes with the hot rod. Try burning a few holes with scrape
plexiglass and you'll what I am talking about. I use unibit drill bit
in high speed drill with good results.

Just a thought, because I'm agonizing over cracking my canopy
while drilling
myself. Why not heat up a rod of the correct size with a propane
torch and
just melt through in the first place?

Subject: | Re: Crashed Hard Drive |
A few years ago I had a hard drive fail, and while I had backup disks, they weren't
current.
So I bought a new drive (bigger & faster than my old one) and installed Windows
on it. Then I did a little research & downloaded a drive recovery program that
had gotten good reviews but cost only $40.
I was able to salvage about 90% of my lost files so I was pretty relieved!
Sorry I can't remember the name of the software but here's a place to start: http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
Good luck!

Ok, time for some self-advertisement!
I just purchased Fisher Flying Products, the company who makes the kit for
the 80% Tiger Moth, which I must say is a great plane!
If you want to learn more, come to our website at www.fisherflying.com. The
Tiger Moth is one of the first planes we are going to re-introduce into
production.
The only way I can justify posting this on the list is that I am 90% done my
601XL with 90% to go. Just put it on the gear today.
Cheers

One thing that may work is: Place the drive in the freezer overnight and in the
morning, place it back in the computer or in an external enclosure. Mount it
and retrieve the data.
