Mark:
I have been using a similar tool that I found in Home Depot for my
entire project, and it seems to work equivalently well. When Michael
come down from Quality Sport last year, he also said that it was
equivalent. It is called a "laminate" knife and is found in the kitchen
counter section. Was about $7-8 I think. The key feature is the shaped
carbide insert at the cutting edge.

to agree on a location in rear fuselage, low on the side. I used two ports,
one on either side, connected in middle and single tube run forward to Dynon.
Haven't flown yet, so can't tell you how it works.

Hello group ,about 30 min ago my internet server got back in business
.Thanks for all the concern about "Ike" .When it was heading my way the wife
and myself left for higher ground in our 5th wheel travel trailer .As most
of you know the direct hit was around Galveston .This made my place on the
clean side by about 45 miles .We returned Mon. morning ,the power was out
until 7:30pm Tuesday ,thanks to Honda for building a good generator. Not
much damage other than lots of tree limbs in the yard and my 12' roll-up
door on my hanger was destroyed .We were very fortunate unlike the people in
Galveston. These people cannot return to their homes and many are sleeping
/living in their cars .Most of the gas stations and grocery stores are
starting to open ,Thanks again for your concerns . Wade Jones South

Friends,

Pre-Flighting Your Aircraft: A&P mechanic / pilot Gus Warren will discuss and show
you how to thoroughly pre-flight your Zenith aircraft before every flight,
with an actual inspection of a completed aircraft. Several pre-flight classes
will be scheduled during the day (using various Zenith aircraft models). 9:00
am and 1:00 pm one-hour sessions are planned.
And from William Wynne:
Gus Warren will be giving forums at the [Zenith] event as an official guest of
the Factory. He has one forum on Friday and two on Saturday. At the event he
will also be our rep. [ on site also. We are sending him with Conversion and
Installation Manuals, DVD's and One complete set of Gold Parts. Gus is the high
time Corvair/601 Pilot in the world and the only person who has flown both
a 601 and 701 on Corvair power. He has worked on 8 or 9 different Zeniths,
and flown them on long cross countries. Anyone interested in the combination
could have any question answered in person by Gus at the open house More details
are on the Zenith website.
Five weeks ago, on our webpage I wrote: " Few people know that the massive international
financial house AIG is behind almost all aviation insurance. If you
watch BBC world news, you will learn two things; the value of the Euro is going
to keep the price of Rotaxes astronomically high, and AIG has taken a huge
beating lately."
Today's news makes my crystal ball look pretty good. I am interested to know what
this will do to aviation insurance rates. The most likely affect will be
to make high risk planes much more difficult to get full coverage for. It will
likely have much less effect on approved LSA combinations. And, it will have
no effect on homebuilders who choose to fly without insurance. We never had
aircraft insurance on our Pietenpol, but always had it on our 601, which made
me a lot more comfortable about flying all the demo flights we did. Over the
years we have had a number of planes insured and paid a lot of premiums, but
have never filed a claim of any kind. This may seem like a bad deal, but it
isn't.
In 2001 I had made a single $157 payment on my new Blue Cross policy. They paid
out something like 5,800 times this To Tampa General Hospital after my accident.
Getting your money's worth out of your insurance is far worse than never
filing a claim
Thank you.

Glad to hear Fisher is going to continue. Those are some neat little planes and
if I didn't hate working with wood I probably would have built one. I almost
bought a completed Classic from Mike Makepeace. He is/was one of Fisher's dealers
and flys out of our downtown airport.
Good luck with Fisher.

Subject: | Muffler Problem - Advice Needed |
Hi Listers,
I need some help.
I built a Zenair CH-601-HD kit back in 1993 /95.
It has Rotax 912 Engine with Zenair firewall-forward kit that included
engine mount, mufflers, etc.
The original left side muffler has recently failed in flight, breaking at
the front elbow.
It was made with regular carbon steel (not stainless), and appears to have
failed due to corrosion and vibration over the years.
I have attached a few photos for reference.
Zenith has been very slow / reluctant to respond to my RFQ so far, other
than to tell me they don't have the old muffler system in stock.
Even that took 1 month, 5 emails and 30 minutes trying to get thru on the
phone. Very frustrating, especially since I am also still trying to sell my
plane.
It is the old dual-muffler design that I need in order for it to fit in the
original cowling (I assume).
I think the newer models use single muffler (SS).
Any other possible sources for these custom parts?
Or other general advice?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Darryl,
Have you tried talking to your local muffler shop? In the typical
shop they can whip together just about anything you want.

Daryl,
I'd recommend you get a price for the pipes and sell the plane less the
price of the exhaust system.
Or put a set of straight pipes on it so the buyer can fly it home and
make a set himself.
Or look up crashed 601s in the FAA database and find one that has a set
of mufflers that are good.
Should be one out there somewhere.
Look up your EAA chapter and see if anyone would like to make you a
replacement.

Wade,
I am glad you are doing well. Who would have thought that Ike would have huge
effects reaching as far as Ohio. I am on day 5 of no electric power since Ike's
high winds swept through Cincinnati last Sunday. I have never had a power
outage this long so I share your appreciation for Honda generators.
Hope you all are out of the woods soon,

Darryl:
If you cannot get the job done at your local muffler shop as others have
suggested, I believe, looking at the photo of your cowling that the new
single muffler would fit. I got mine from Zenair Europe.
I think your best bet is to phone Nick H. (in France) and discuss your
problem with him. You can get his phone # from Zenair in Midland.

UPDATE ON SKYCATCHER
A Cessna plane went down in southwest Butler County a few miles east of
Douglass. The plane was a prototype of the Cessna Skycatcher, and it was on a
routine test flight.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud pop then seeing sparks as the plane
spiraled downward, crashing into a tree line about 1/2 mile east of Hopkins
Switch Road on 230th near the Butler County/Cowley County line.
A Cessna spokesperson said the plane had more than 100 flights and 150 hours
in the air.
The pilot parachuted out of the plane and landed safely in a field roughly
400 yards away from the wreckage. Cessna says the most important detail is
the safety of the pilot, who was taken to the hospital with only minor
injuries.
The Skycatcher is Cessna's entry into the sport and training plane market.
Cessna says it is too early to know what went wrong, and it could be days or
weeks before the investigation is complete.

Darryl,
I'm finishing an HDS (1999 vintage kit) with a 912S. I have the same cowl that
you do and the old style bed motor mount. I have the single muffler system and
from looking at your photos, I think it will fit your HD as others have pointed
out.
