Subject: | Re: Muffler Problem - Advice Needed |
Hi Darryl,
When we built our 601 HDS, it also had the muffler system that you
have described. After a short time, the elbows of the system failed
and I got stainless steel versions from Zenith. Then I finally decided
to replace the entire system with a single muffler, with exhaust pipes
and muffler made of stainless steel. But I kept the old system:
stainless steel elbows and the two mufflers of carbon steel. The latter
had to be made a bit smaller at one end due to the cowl. But it all
is there and still works. If you like, I can mail you everything if
you pay for the shipping charges.
Please let me know very quickly. I am leaving town the coming week
and will return in early November. Of course, if there is no time
pressure, everything could be done in November.
Best wishes,
Klaus

Subject: | Re: Wire Service Loops |
Hi Dave,
The answer to how much wire to leave in a service loop is purely
personal. As for how to prevent chafing, wrap the loop and any other
threatened segments of wire with some appropriate diameter plastic
spiral wrap then secure it with cable ties. I enclosed my brake lines
and some wiring in the center support channel under the cabin by making
a cover for that channel. I even wrapped my brake lines with spiral wrap
within that channel. If you see extensive chaffing on the spiral wrap,
it is fairly easy to replace it rather than re-wire.

Greetings from Idaho:
FYI
I base my plane on the airfield where Kitfox got its start -- Caldwell
Industrial Airport.
I have not seen a Kitfox or an Avid Flyer pilot fold the wings for overnight
storage, towing home, etc. yet!
I custom built a hangar with private individual accommodations (with roll-up
doors, etc.) for these aircraft 15 years ago. As of this date I have not
rented these spaces for a wing-folding aircraft. Most pilots don't want to
go through the trouble.

I built and flew an Avid Flyer Aerobat Mark 4 for over 13 years. Still
listed with pictures on the AvidFlyer.com site, it was one of the best
aircraft I ve owned.
(see AvidFlyer.com owner/builders)
Because of sharing a hangar, I folded the wings almost daily. I got it down
to three minutes per wing....
Figuring the cost of a hangar in San Diego, the trouble was waaaay worth
it......
I moved to Arizona, where the online pictures were taken, and did sell the
Avid so I could build a Zenith 601XL. Build? Thats what I do.
