This can be shortened just a bit by using quick connect/disconnect fittings for wiring and the pitot/static system, but it's still a pain. There are lots of things to line up - bottom skin clips, front and rear connectors, the cover strip, and the spar plates. Once a few bolts are slipped through the spar plate holes, the rest go in fairly quickly, but it's still time consuming. The aileron connections are easy. Hope this helps. I can't say anything about the Sonex. Bill Daryl wrote: > > Hi group, > > I've been lurking in this group since February and am interested in the CH > 601 HD. I have also been looking at the Sonex. I talked to my insurance agent about changing from non-movement insurance to flight insurance. I have a little over 8 hours in the first SLSA 601XL, but that was back in 2006. The insurance company wanted me to get some more recent experience in a Zodiac. I live in Northern Virginia. Ron Steele found Forsyth Aviation in Gaithersburg Maryland for me. The owner is Younis Forsyth, a long time local CFII. He sold his Bonanza for the 650! His is the same airplane that was on display at Oshkosh this year. It is equipped so that he can do Sport Pilot, Primary, and Instrument training in it. It has both steam gauges and the latest in electronic equipment including a Garmin 530, 330 transponder, SL30 NAV/COM, Dynon EMS, and Aspen Avionics EFIS. It does not have an ADF. It is a 650 so it has the new canopy and rudder. The rollover protection is a clear improvement. Other than that, it looks to me like a 601. It clearly is a Zodiac. On the walk around, however, I couldn't resist telling Younis every detail that differed from my 601-HD. This Zodiac has the gascolator hanging out the bottom, but AMD built a cage around it. The plane is meant to fit a lot of people. At 5-7 reaching the center throttle was a bit far for me. It has dual sticks and dual throttles, one on the left side and one in the middle. With the Continental in it, it has a mixture control. Younis and I agreed to fly without using the flaps to simulate my HD model. I was comfortable in the plane after about the first 20 minutes. My only concern was that I couldn't see over the cowling. Younis said something about getting a booster seat for those of us less than 6 feet tall! That will help. Care is also required getting in and out. The knobs on the Aspen are easy to hit with your foot. Flying characteristics couldn't be more docile. There was no hard break in either stall. The power-on stall resulted in an attitude so steep that no one could do that unintentionally. It felt like the airplane was vertical. I made mostly acceptable take-offs and landings. The pitch control is very sensitive. Younis showed me how to rest my elbow on the upper longeron for stability. Control movements were done with the wrist, not the arm. I didn't break anything and the plane is there if you need Zodiac time. Younis is a great instructor and I enjoyed my time with him immensely. I now have the flight time to make my insurance company happy. Younis offers an introductory flight for a reasonable cost. His normal fees are on the web site as well as pictures of the plane. His URL is: http://www.forsythaviation.us/ I would recommend that others in the Mid-Atlantic area consider going to Forsyth for the Zodiac training they need.
