Subject: | Re: Members Only Question- Whiskey compass |
Last December, I received my Airworthiness Certificate with only the Dynon equipment
on board, NO "Whiskey Compass". I have the D180 as my primary (with battery
backup) and a D100 as a secondary backup on the co-pilots side.

Andy,
Any chance you might have the sku# for the knife. I am in Canada, and
when I inquired about the " laminate " type knife, they all gave me the
funny look, and responded that since they knew nothing about it, most
probably it wasen't available in Canada.

I have been using a similar tool that I found in Home Depot for my
entire project, and it seems to work equivalently well. When Michael
come down from Quality Sport last year, he also said that it was
equivalent. It is called a "laminate" knife and is found in the kitchen
counter section. Was about $7-8 I think. The key feature is the shaped
carbide insert at the cutting edge.

The numbers below refer to the Olfa Series 800 knife, and if you look
closely at the original posting, it referred to a different knife, one
with a carbide blade, that is not available on the Olfa model.
At the time, it was mentioned in another responce that although it
looked like the above Olfa, it was a different model.

Robert
I have just looked at my knife and on the handle it reads ' OLFA
P-CUTTER 800 Special Tungsten Steel Blade'.
As I managed to get one in the UK, should be ok in North America,
suggest you go onto the Olfa website and get a local stockist.
It is an amazing too I have cut nearly all of my aluminium sheets and am
still on the first blade so the 25 spare blades should be ok for another
20 odd aircraft!
Without this knife (and Dave Clay's brake) I would really have
struggled.
Hope this helps

Malcolm,
I am happy to hear that you were able to get that much mileage out of
your blade. As for myself, I have the exact same knife/blade combo.
However not wanting to argue the fact, but when I got through making 5
or 6 swipes on 12' lengths of aluminum, and after having cut 6, 12'
sections, the blade ( Special Tungsten Steel ) it showed wear, and
needed replacement. When a new blade was finally installed, it was if I
had a brand new knife.
The original post mentioned a blade with a " carbide insert " so that is
why I was willing to go the extra mile with a second cutter, thinking
that it might be even better then the first.
Thank's for your input, and fly safe
