I put an access plate in the aluminum wingtip plate.? I didn't think it would need

On a related note, has anyone used nut plates to attach the tips? ?I'm thinking
this would allow access to strobe power supplies. ?Are there any special requirements

?
How you go about getting a good fit of the forward (fiberglass) wing tip on the
601XL? I have a couple for problems. One is how to hold the tip in place while
drilling, as there doesn't seem to be a way to clamp it. The other is that
it looks like I'll have to trim the skin around the front of the tip to prevent
it extending past the curve of the fiberglass. Is this normal? If I install
the tip so that front of the skin blends smoothly into the tip, there is
only about 4mm of space to rivet the tip. I know this isn't very clear. Trying
to come up with a better description.?

Dan,
I used a Cessna primer for my 0-235 and determined the inlet and outlet
by working the pump and putting a finger over each hole to see which one
created suction or pressure. The primer inlet should connect prior to the
fuel pumps at the top of the gascolator.

Ron-
If you plan to use pulled rivets to attach the nutplates on the
fiberglass, you'll have to go with the comparatively larger nutplates.
#6 or #8 are attached with a small rivet available in only one draw size
from Wicks, which is the only outlet I could find and probably not long
enough for your application. Expensive little puppies, too.
If you want access, I'd put a plate in the aluminum ala Jay. Just
guessing, but I would imagine you'd have less airflow disruption on the
bottom of the wing.
This means nothing in your situation, but I went with standard
position lights secured with rivnuts for bulb replacement access, and a
belly strobe with the flash unit mounted behind the seat.
I'm not familiar with the XL setup, but would it be possible to
extend your wiring to allow the flash unit to be mounted inside the
cockpit? Might be the best scenario.
Bill

My strobe power supplies are mounted to the floor under the seats. I
can get to them through the spar bolt access panel.

I dont rember who posted the article about the R-V vent's , I ordered a
set ,made them up and installed in my XL. They are the best ! the very
best ,not to mention the pair only cost $18.00. I dont remember spending
$18.00 on any for this airplane that worked any better, and made me any
happier., going to use the other vent's to go up to my dash and cool
every thing under there. Thank's again !!

Zenith 601 XL / Corvair N4ZK made it's maiden voyage tonight. It has
a standard recipe William Wynne conversion, and performance is
excellent. Climbout is strong and handling easy. I have no performance
numbers to share yet, as I was more concerned at this early stage with
just monitoring critical temps and airspeed. EGT and CHT were well
below the max indicators I placed on the guage faces, but oil temp did
keep creeping up, and required me to throttle back to arrest the trend
after a while. This plane is fast and smooth, and my single landing so
far was easy. High idle speed carried me a ways down the runway, and
that will be addressed in time. It seemed to take quite a bit of
elevator trim to bring the nose up and remove the pressure from the
stick. It's possible I'll need to adjust the elevator angle a bit, but
too soon to say. It's currently 1 deg. down. A very nice handling
plane, and I'm looking forward to burning off some of those pesky Phase
one hours. I'll share more as I gather performance data and tweak things
if needed. Keep building !!
