Subject: | Correcting canopy spread? |
Despite fitting quite well during construction, now that I am getting
close to flying I find that the rear of my canopy has spread a bit, may
1/2". This makes it more difficult to close and secure the canopy.
I was wondering if anyone had tried to adjust the rear canopy bow
*after* getting the whole thing together and installed?
I was thinking of two methods. Both require measuring the existing
spread first.
[1] Loosen the front screws. Completely unscrew the canopy from the
rear bow and attempt to remove the bow from the frame. Then attempt to
carefully squeeze the bow to tighten it 1/2".
or
[2] Remove the canopy from the plane. Loosen all the screws a bit.
Place canopy sideways on a ground pad and carefully push down on the
rear of the frame until the set changes by 1/2".
I would appreciate comments on these proposals, and of course any
additional (especially proven) ideas.
Thanks,

Andrew, The bow is SOOO easy to kink, yes I know. Remove it, pack it
with sand, tweek it and reinstall.

I've had the same problem and haven't fixed it yet but I've been thinking that
a possible fix would be to add a crossbar connected to the rear bow.
This would fix the spacing issue and allow for the attachment of a hold down strap
or safety wire much like the one Jay just posted.

Andy--
I had the same problem and added a cross bar. When adding the cross bar I
made
two brackets which were riveted to the rear bow. On one bracket I drilled a
hole for
an anchoring bolt to one end of the added cross bar and on the other bracke
t I cut a slot
to anchor the other end of the cross bar. This slot will allow for future n
eeded adjustments.
For the cross bar I used a piece of 6061 the same diameter as the rear bow.
I flatened the
ends in a vice and drilled the required holes. I used an3 bolts with stopnu
ts to secure the ends.
An added advantage is that the bar acts as a handy way to pull the canopy d
own.

Howdy all;
I am selling my: BING 94 / 64 AIRCRAFT CARBURETOR which is ALTITUDE
COMPENSATING.
This is a German Bing model 94 carburetor, it's the NEW big brother of the
model 64 and has a throttle valve diameter of 42 mm. This is an altitude
compensating, constant depression carburetor for aircraft use. This unit is
similar to the ones used on the Rotax 912 engine, only larger. This
particular carburetor is sized for engines between 60-120 HP and can be
tuned by changing the main jet or needle height (jets are included).
I purchased this unit from Great Plains, they make VW aircraft engines and
it came with my water cooled head type engine. It can be used on
experimental aircraft engines like the corvair or VW or other 4 or 6
cylinder engines under 120 HP. Its is also used on the Jabiru engine. I had
this unit on my Great Plains VW for about a year, and I got it new. It has
about 25 hours of operation on it and it is in perfect operating condition.
After I received the unit form Great Plains, I converted it to a standard
aircraft "fail-open" type throttle operation, which uses a wire control
throttle and a wire control choke.
If anyone is interested, email me back for more info and a special matronics
only price.

Subject: | Re: Canopy Safety |
In Australia
we are recommending putting in an extra safety latch or cable to all our Zodiac
XL's with the older thinner Aero Plastics 80 thou canopy's. It appears that
the older 2 stage locking mechanism is easy to not lock properly. This results
in it only locking to the first stage and popping up just after take off.
It normally happens on the passenger side, as they don't like to slam the canopy
, so lowering gently and not locking it fully..
We can either have a cable system as Jan's one above or an extra lock on each side
of the normal lock. If you upgrade to the newer canopy system you don't need
to do this or get a Todd's Canopy as they are 120 thou.
I will try and attach some photos.
Chris.

Look at the root of the blades (pictures attached). The part number on my
blades and invoice is 2A0J5R64ZN. The 64 is the diameter: 64 inch. By chance
I just measured mine and confirmed this. I believe the "R" means right-hand
and the final "N" flags the nickel leading edge which my prop has. The
description on the Sensenich invoice says "2 bladed right hand composite
aircraft propeller with nickel edges, short shank, 64" diameter. Blade S/N's
11574, 11661; hub S/N 23627". The is nothing on the hub but the serial
number and a label describing the specs, RPM limits and bolt torques for the
"EZ-Pitch Composite Aircraft Propeller"
