Subject: | 601XL Flap Gap Stop |
Plans page 6-S-3 specifies installation of a flap gap stop on the O/B end of
each flap on the 601XL. Are these stops supposed to be part of the kit? I
cannot find them in my kit. If not, can someone tell me where to obtain the
correct material for making these stops?
Thanks,

If I had the center yoke control it might not have been. Question is can you exit
the plane quickly with the cable attached. Say a fire, smoke filled cockpit
while taxing, etc? Best regards, Bill of Georgia??

As you may know, the canopy of the AMD 601XLi I was flying came open; flew up to
about 50 degrees and the airplane became uncontrollable. As soon as I had recovered
enough to get around, the very first thing I did was to install a safety
cable to the canopy of my airplane, Lil Bruiser. I have attached drawing of
what I installed.? I made the cable just long enough, when pinned, that the canopy
can be open a little for taxi on hot days. I am probably going to add a
removable nylon strap that will be long enough to help pull the canopy down when
seated.? Let me know if you have any questions.

Dave,
I got some of the white nylon plastic in my kit for these stops. You can also
buy it from Aircraft Spruce or locally (like a cutting board).

Subject: | Safetying of turnbuckles on 6B17-4 Torque Tube |
Hi All,
I'm having a problem with safetying the turnbuckles that connect the
cable from the aileron bellcranks to the 6b17-4 torque tube. There isnt
enough clearance between the edge of the tongue torque tube and the
inside edge of the turnbuckle fork to the safety wire. If the torque
tube tongue is vertical it's OK but if you deflect the stick to either
side then the wire is pinched between the edge of the turnbuckle fork
and the torque tube tongue.
My Tech counselor suggested using locking turnbuckles but I cant seem to
find the MS21251-4RS/4RL parts for that.
Any ideas or suggestions ? I assume other folks must have run into this
as well ?
Thanks,
John Davis

Bill,
Just curious.? Were you alone when the canopy came open?
I have heard other accounts of canopies coming open, all with single occupants,
and it being manageable.? And I am guessing that AMD tested a canopy un-latch
with a single test pilot.? They say the canopy will only open a foot or so.?
I am beginning to think that the drastic action of the canopy in my case might
have been because there were two aboard.
No, it would not be possible to open the canopy with the safety cable in place
and pinned. Emergency exit would be a three step
process: 1) pull the safety cable pin, 2) unlatch and open the canopy, 3) unlatch
seat belt, and get the hell out! (approximately the same as a normal exit,
only faster!)?
In your example fo smoke or fire, my fire extinguisher is located in the baggage
area just behind the passenger seat, very near the safety cable pin. After pulling
the pin, I would have to decide whether to employ the extinguisher or just
get out.

John,
I had a similar problem with the rudder pedal hookup on my 601HD. I
bought MS21252-4LS fork ends from Wicks. I realize there's a difference
in the part number from what you said, but I think the 21252 is correct.
Hope this helps. BTW, I'm in Hendersonville, NC.

I looked at them when I was considering a much more complex panel. Before you buy one get a price quote for a custom harness from somebody like http://www.steinair.com/. It might well be cheaper.

Hi John,
There are a number of solutions to this problem.
You can grind the corners of the mating plate down with a Dremel tool
to make room for the wire.
You might get away with a lighter gauge of safety wire if you get it
into the outside corners of the fork.
Good luck,

Subject: | Request for your video footage |
Sending again.... first one didnt go thru.. sorry if this becomes a
duplicate...
We need to obtain VIDEO of Zenith builders and flyers doing their thing
(building, flying, etc) and compile it to a DVD to include in the next
newsletter. The same type of videos that has been submitted to U-tube
is exactly what we are looking for - first flights and the many other
possible topics - but with the advantage of putting it on DVD so the
family can gather round to watch high quality video and sound on your
TV. Also, the ability to compile multiple submissions onto one disk
allows a library of Zenith video history to be collected in one place
for future viewing (when you need an attitude boost for getting back to
building). High technology allows us at the Zenair Newsletter to edit
and distribute video DVD disks with the newsletter at no additional cost
to members! This is the perfect opportunity to use this medium to its
fullest.
What we need from you:
VIDEO of you building workshop - have your significant other or children
operate the video camera of YOU showing your project and describing your
progress. As much as you would like to see others building - they want
to see YOU, too! Provide a little self-interview of building - describe
the mods you are making or techniques that others might find useful. Be
funny, if you want... AND.. doesnt matter if you have 5 or 50 minutes of
footage... I will edit and compile as necessary to make it work.. Raw,
unedited is just FINE... I will edit.
I know the footage is out there... look at the various UTube footage
floating around.... I can use that! (but I need the original footage,
not the compressed computer format) Im looking for first flights, last
flights!, middle flights, at the airport, etc. Some of you have footage
from recent Oshkosh and other shows... kids working on Zeniths...
stories told first person by pilots that fly them... As I have visited
fly-ins I hear amazing stories of emergency landings, engine outs and
the like... talk into the camera and submit it!
Some of you guys participate in EAA chapters and clubs... grab the man
handy with the camera and shoot away... (keep it mostly Zenith related,
tho!) It does not have to be polished or professional... sometimes a
good 5 minutes of this or that is most entertaining and educational!
How to get your video to me:
Mail your tape to me (post office mail!) I can use either: mini-digital
tape or the larger (8mm) digital tape.... or if you have video on DVD I
can lift it off of that. If you have your video in an .AVI file on a
CD, that is super! Dont worry if there is other stuff already on your
tape (family stuff) as I will only copy off just the zenith stuff. I
have the ability to edit out bad words, obscene gestures, etc so dont
worry about unpolished material. I can mail the tapes/disks back to
you. The understanding is that what you send me is OK to make public for
the Zenith Newsletter members - just like submitting a photo. Send me
as much as you wish... I will judge how much can be used, etc. I can
also voice over the video if that needs to be done... just write down
what we are looking at so I can accurately present the material.
When do I need it:
Now! as I need some time to edit and compile... but if you can't send
it for a while and it misses my deadline, there is always another issue
so NOTHING you send will get wasted! It doesnt matter how old your
footage is... your first flight from 4 years ago is still very valuable
to current builders that want to experience those moments.
My address:
Zenair News/Jon Croke
9186 County K
Brussels, WI 54204
Can I count on something from anyone? Drop it in the mail tomorrow?
(otherwise you'll only see *my* first flights..... I'll contribute
that!)
Feel free to email me direct if you have questions or ideas on other
video topics that might work here. The DVD you just received in the
current newsletter issue was just a start - it needs to be better!
Thanks!

Subject: | Re: AVIONICS WIRING |
[quote="Gig Giacona"]I looked at them when I was considering a much more complex panel. Before you buy one get a price quote for a custom harness from somebody like http://www.steinair.com/. It might well be cheaper.
[quote="N117FA"]Has anyone had experience with APPROACH SPORT HUB AVIONICS WIRING
SYSTEMS? Are there any flying out there? Have any connector or hub issues surfaced?
Thanks,

Thanks for the input. I like what I see from the photos at http://www.steinair.com/ if I need anything custom in the future. I actually have the Approach system in my AMD Zodiac CH650LSi and was experiencing some issues that may have to do with a connector. I was curious if anyone using this system had experienced any issues.
Your Zodiac is really sharp. Excellent website with the chronicle of your build.
