The same type of videos that has been submitted to U-tube is exactly what we are
looking for - first flights and the many other possible topics - but with the
advantage of putting it on DVD so the family can gather round to watch high
quality video and sound on your TV. Also, the ability to compile multiple submissions
onto one disk allows a library of Zenith video history to be collected
in one place for future viewing (when you need an attitude boost for getting
back to building). High technology allows us at the Zenair Newsletter to edit
and distribute video DVD disks with the newsletter at no additional cost to
members! This is the perfect opportunity to use this medium to its fullest.

As much as you would like to see others building - they want to see YOU, too!
Provide a little self-interview of building - describe the mods you are making
or techniques that others might find useful. Be funny, if you want... AND..
doesnt matter if you have 5 or 50 minutes of footage... I will edit and compile
as necessary to make it work.. Raw, unedited is just FINE... I will edit.

shows... kids working on Zeniths... stories told first person by pilots that
fly them... As I have visited fly-ins I hear amazing stories of emergency landings,
engine outs and the like... talk into the camera and submit it!

worry if there is other stuff already on your tape (family stuff) as I will
only copy off just the zenith stuff. I have the ability to edit out bad words,
obscene gestures, etc so dont worry about unpolished material. I can mail
the tapes/disks back to you. The understanding is that what you send me is OK
to make public for the Zenith Newsletter members - just like submitting a photo.
Send me as much as you wish... I will judge how much can be used, etc. I
can also voice over the video if that needs to be done... just write down what
we are looking at so I can accurately present the material.

Juan,
My wife walked in as I was watching your video and said "oh my, he's a hottie".
Just thought I'd pass that along.
There is a website that lets you download and save most videos from the web. I've
saved a lot of 601 videos from youtube using this site.

Subject: | Re: Canopy Safety |
Jay, the canopy popped open on the right side and I was alone. It was during the
phase 1 fly off and I either didn't check it or only half locked it ? As I pulled
off on take off the right side popped up, scared the hell out of me, and
I switched hands real quick and grabbed the canopy with my right hand and held
it down to top of climb. I have dual sticks so I could fly left handed or with
my knees. I had previously installed door handles on the inside of the canopy
sides to help guide them into the lugs so I tried with two hands to re latch
it, but could not pull it on down. I chopped power and was probably flying about
- 60 mph and still could not get it to re latch. I took the passenger seat
belt and routed it through the handle and cinched it down pretty snug and continued
on with my test flight. I was very surprised that I could not re latch
to thing while flying even at stall speeds. I now always double check the latches
before takeoff. As to the three step process to
egress the plane. You might consider whether you could?control the plane, find
the pin, un belt yourself and do what you need to,?etc and get out say blind
from smoke and holding your breath? For me the popping canopy concern is correctable
with good and diligent preflight checks. While adding another thing along
with safety belts, the safe egress of my passenger (sometimes grand babies
I'd die for) to exiting the plane in an emergency would not be something I'd want.
With the pin behind the passenger seat can the passenger find and pull them
if the left seat guy can't? Just some thoughts and best regards, Bill

Bill,
Just curious.? Were you alone when the canopy came open?
I have heard other accounts of canopies coming open, all with single occupants,
and it being manageable.? And I am guessing that AMD tested a canopy un-latch
with a single test pilot.? They say the canopy will only open a foot or so.?
I am beginning to think that the drastic action of the canopy in my case might
have been because there were two aboard.
No, it would not be possible to open the canopy with the safety cable in place
and pinned. Emergency exit would be a three step
process: 1) pull the safety cable pin, 2) unlatch and open the canopy, 3) unlatch
seat belt, and get the hell out! (approximately the same as a normal exit,
only faster!)?
In your example fo smoke or fire, my fire extinguisher is located in the baggage
area just behind the passenger seat, very near the safety cable pin. After pulling
the pin, I would have to decide whether to employ the extinguisher or just
get out.

Jay, I too have had my XL canopy open while flying. A problem, but manageable.
If I had the center yoke control it might not have been. Question is can you exit
the plane quickly with the cable attached. Say a fire, smoke filled cockpit
while taxing, etc? Best regards, Bill of Georgia??

As you may know, the canopy of the AMD 601XLi I was flying came open; flew up to
about 50 degrees and the airplane became uncontrollable. As soon as I had recovered
enough to get around, the very first thing I did was to install a safety
cable to the canopy of my airplane, Lil Bruiser. I have attached drawing of
what I installed.? I made the cable just long enough, when pinned, that the canopy
can be open a little for taxi on hot days. I am probably going to add a
removable nylon strap that will be long enough to help pull the canopy down when
seated.? Let me know if you have any questions.

Bill,
The plate that the safety cable is pinned to is fastened to the cross member that
is near the top of the seats and is between the seats.? Both occupants have
equal access to the pin.
I'm now thinking that having two aboard has a lot to do with how far an open canopy
will rise.

My landing gear bungees now sag enough to raise the strut plate a
good 1/2" above the wing surface when parked. This is relatively new.
These bungees were purchased with the kit circa 1995 ... I guess it's
time to replace them even though the airframe is still low
time ....? Is there a "specification" for how much sag is allowed?
Does anyone have a good source for these bungees? I recall
discussions a few years ago where there were some issues finding new
bungees of the appropriate length. Is this still a problem?
Thanks in advance

Subject: | Re: UL 260 Engine |
Hi Alberto,
I took a look at the web site for the UL 260 engine. I didn't know
anything about it before looking just now.
One thing that I noticed is the engine is a very new design with very
few already manufactured and shipped. This may not be a problem, but
suggests the market acceptance of this engine is not yet very
good. There are inevitable "Teething" pains that must be overcome
with any new design. It may be that this period is not yet over for
this engine. I didn't see where the engine was manufactured, but the
price in Euros suggested perhaps it is some place in Europe. You may
or may not have difficulties getting normal maintenance parts.
The performance specifications suggest this engine is more powerful
than a Rotax 912 or Jabiru 2200 but less than a 912S and a lot less
than a 3300. I guess it is sufficient for a Zodiac XL if you really
want the features of this design.
The price and weight are similar to a Jabiru 3300 but the power is
significantly less. The basic configuration is similar with direct
drive and air only cooling, The obvious differences include 4
cylinders rather than 6 and fuel injection rather than carburetor. I
think the fuel injection is highly desirable for smooth and trouble
free operation, but the 4 cylinder will certainly vibrate more than a 6.
I don't know of anyone producing a FWF kit for this engine and the
Zodiac. That means you need to come up with some significant parts
like engine mount and cowl. There are also lesser parts like voltage
regulator, starter solenoid, and battery choices to deal with. You
can buy all this stuff already packaged for the Jabiru or Rotax engine choices.
I chose the Jabiru 3300 for my plane, so I am biased. Still, I think
it would be wise for you to consider the two engines feature for
feature before deciding which one best fits your needs.
Good luck,
Paul

Subject: | Which Of Two STOL CH7XX Building Choices? |
Hi guys,
I was planing on building a 701 after my Sonex is completed (probably a good year
and a half away). The engine I was planing on putting in it is the 2300cc
VW with Redrive from Great Plains/Valley Engineering. it pumps out 105 hp and
swings a pretty big prop. I have heard many good reports from this combination.
I was planing on increasing the gross to 1200 lbs to give me close to 600
lbs useful load. (not the best idea going over recommended gross, but many have
done it with the 701 successfully).
Here is the thing. I'm a big guy and while I fit in the 701, the 750 has MUCH
more room. So that got me thinking of going with the 750/Corvair combination.
Simple enough, but the useful load drops to 545 (if I am lucky and build light).
So that got me thinking ab out using the same GPAS/Valley Engineering redrive
combo for the 750, since it pumps out more than the 100 hp of the Continental.
It seems to be a pretty decent direct replacement for the 912ULS (like
the Corvair is for the 0-200). I figure that I would get at least 40 lbs useful
load from it. I am not concerned if my cruise drops a little, if I want to
go fast I will use the sonex.
What do you guys think? Would love to hear opinions on this matter.
Jon

I=A2d reconsider using the 2300 VW w/Redrive package you=A2ve mentioned due
to cylinder head temp and service life issues. The 105 HP you=A2ve mention

when at or near GW will result in a significant thermal heat transfer to t

shorten TBO or more to the point require you to replace cylinder heads very

Jon;
Ya, Joes right, I have trouble just cooling a 2180 cc engine, the 105HP is
only available for a few minutes. But...
Why not use the Great Plains 2300 CC VW engine with aluminum cylinders? It
puts out 85 HP and weighs a lot less than a corvair engine (about 60 pounds)
and you can
get true duel ignition system (not available on corvairs).

weight and balance and Power. the 0-200 is a little heavy in the nose, the 3300
is much higher torque and you feel it at take off and in climb. 400 fpm on the
0-200 at 70 mph climb out, versus 3300 went up at 1100 fpm at 70 mph with two
aboard at climb out. much less vibration than the 0-200.
Lower RPM is felt also.

Subject: | Re: Which Of Two STOL CH7XX Building Choices? |
Great info guys. Roger, you have a 2180/Valley Engineering Redrive? What type
of aircraft do you have it in? Can you give more detail about your experience?
The only problem with a direct drive 2300cc vw from great plains is the prop length.
With its high RPM, I doubt I will be able to swing a big enough prop on
that engine to take advantage of the CH701's STOL capabilities. I plan on using
a 2180cc on my sonex and I was hoping to use another VW in the 701.

Jon;
Na, I have a water cooled Great plains VW now, it's 100 HP but the heads
are no longer made, so that options off the board for you. I got my redrive data
from Great plains VW, they sell the redrives, but warn against continues use
at high power, thus the 5 minutes estimate (from there literature). There just
is not enough cooling fin area on the engine to
get rid of the waste heat generated about 80 HP, without water cooling anyway.
The 701's gross weight does not justify an engine over 65 HP really, any
more than that is just an increase in climb, and a bit more cruise speed,
unless you plan to put it on floats of course.
A little HP is good, but a lot is not necessarily very good.
Roger
