Subject: | Re: Which Of Two STOL CH7XX Building Choices? |
This really is fascinating. I never noticed it before, but the continuous hp of
the 2300 redrive is the same as the 2300 direct drive. So, basically, the redrive
at best gives a quick 20-25hp boost for a few minutes, but after that I
am flying with the same hp that I would have with a direct drive engine of the
same size, I am just able to swing a bigger prop.
So Joe, when you warned about using the max hp for redrive VW at gross continuously
(how I would wind up burning through cylinder heads quickly) it is really
no different than running the 2180cc direct drive VW that I plan on putting
in my sonex at the same abnormally high hp. It will cause additional stress on
the engine and create early wear. I always wondered how a redrive could just
magically create additional hp, seemed like getting something for nothing, now
I (hopefully) have a better understanding.
Roger, I agree about not needing more than 65hp. IIRC, for several years the factory
demo CH701 was run on a 2 stroke rotax 582 and did just fine. The redrive
may still be a good option if only by letting me use a larger prop. Both
the 701 and my future aerovee (2180 VW)powered sonex have the same gross, so there
shouldn't be much of a problem staying in the air with only 70hp continuous.
good info. It definitely answers some questions.

Subject: | Re: UL 260 Engine |
Hi there!
there is one in the UK, maybe he is on the list. I already have one Jab
3300 for my XL but we are building two and the owner of the other AC thinks
the UL is the way to go. I have my doubts given the fact that it is new, no
FFW package, probably no ZAC support and nobody on the lists to give first
hand impression on an 601.
Thanks a lot to all of you for the responses.
PS: The engine I believe is manufactured in Belgium

The maximum continuous power an engine can deliver depends on the
engine itself and its cooling system, the presence or absence of a
redrive is irrelevant. Whether or not it can actually be operated at
that power level MAY depend on whether or not it has a redrive.
A redrive doesn't allow any engine to produce more power at a
particular RPM and torque, but you may not be able to operate a direct
drive engine at a that RPM because the propeller would have to be too
small to be practical. A redrive may allow you to use more of the
engine's available power by running it at the higher RPM while turning
a suitable prop at a lower RPM. Or a redrive can allow you to use a
larger, more efficient prop at the same engine RPM and thereby get
more thrust at the same power setting.
The main effect of a redrive is to give you more thrust, not more
power; and thrust is, ultimately, what drives the airplane through the
air.

Subject: | Re: 601 HDS bungees |
Leo - thanks. I ordered them at ACS - but my link shows 35$US each
for the 1080HD. fwiw
<http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/
shock_rings.php> size
1080HD for $19.30 each.
I searched the archives and I think that in the past some builders
had problems but it might have involved subbing a 1080 non-HD?
(stretchier?), or a 1280HD (3/4" thick vs. 5/8") ...
At the same time I'm installing Mac Machine's lower gear plate
upgrade (to 1/8" by 90mm) and the plastic bearings top and bottom on
the struts.
Does anyone happen to have any good sequential instructions for
changing out the bungees? It's been a long time since I assembled
all that and I did it on a work bench. I'm not looking forward to
doing it now from under the plane, in a 'dirty' gear box with
accumulated dust and grease...
You can be sure I thought deeply about changing the whole thing over
to one of the spring/steel legs ala XL but... $$$ and total weight
tipped the scales back to the original gear legs.
Thanks all
Grant

Subject: | 601XL Tail Light Kit For Sale |
I decided to install a different lighting system on my 601XL, so I will not
be using the rudder tail light assembly that I got with my kit.
According to the Zenith website, the cost of the tail light kit (8002TL) is
$72.80. If you are interested, I will ship it to you for $40 in the US, (if
out-of-country, I'll need to determine shipping costs first). I also have
the fiberglass tail light bracket (FTB), which I will include for no
additional charge, (it is not the best quality, but with some work it could
be used, or if you don't want to use it you could order another from Zenith
for $20.80 + shipping).
E-mail me off-list if you are interested.
Thanks,
Dave Van Lanen

Subject: | Stupid Instrument Question |
OK, looking at the back of my Turn Coordinator, there is a 3 pin connector.
There are 2 pins on top and 1 pin on the bottom. A is Positive, B is
Aircraft Ground and C is not used. Which pin is A and B. I think A is the
top
right and B is top left, but I want to be sure. Thanks for the help.
