I am an electronics hobbyist; therefore, I am not intimidated by the idea of wiring
my XL. I still purchased the Homebuilt Help CD on wiring just to learn any
peculiar aspects of aircraft wiring. On the CD they suggest a master breaker
for the bus bar in addition to all the breakers that branch off of it. Its
not a bad plan, but my concern is that if the breaker fails or trips, you loose
everything over a single issue. I'm curious as how the rest of you dealt with
this issue.

Ken,
I see a master breaker as "double jeopardy." I don't see the need for one and I
don't have one in my system. Most of my system goes through the battery contactor,
but the endurance bus is wired (through a switch) directly to the battery.?

I have my battery connected to my main fuse panel through the master
relay. I don't have a main breaker or fuse in that line, the master
relay is the only circuit protection for the battery cable. The
battery cables are secured and protected to prevent any chafing that
might cause a short. A short in the main battery cable will get your
attention very quickly, allowing you to interrupt the current with the
master switch. I don't see the need for a circuit breaker in addition
to the master relay. I do have a main fuse in the alternator cable
since it doesn't feed through the master relay. I have used aircraft
wiring throughout the cabin, in the case of a short circuit, the
insulation on this wire will not support combustion and will not give
off toxic fumes.

Have you looked at Bob Nuckolls' AeroElectric book? He is acknowledged as an
expert in this area and participates in an active forum of the same name on
Matronics.
http://www.aeroelectric.com/
The book is actually three-hole punched sheets. The appendix contains
schematics and the design rational for about 20 different situations.
As to your specific question Bob would probably recommend a fusible link for
your ultimate protection. But for safety your plane should be designed to be
flyable even if your battery/alternator were dead. I don't know what engine
you are looking at but with a traditional magneto your engine will run with
no battery power. For the auto conversions some go as far as to have two
batteries.
For instruments traditional gauges of course don't need power (day VFR). If
you chose a glass panel most of the manufactures have a provision for a
back-up battery.

Subject: | Re: 701/Corvair Info Request |
Actually Gig,
Sandy's Plane was the second corvair powered 701 to Fly.
There was a gentlemen in New Zealand (John Lowther) who was the first.
This plane is on the Zenith site under custom engine instalations.
And I believe there was a third in Australia.(I could be wrong?)
There are 5 701/ Corvairs that I know of in WA that are well on their way.
I (Poulsbo, WA) am starting my Fuselage, wings and rudder and FWF done, running
engine.
David Orre (Port Angeles) is starting his Wings, Fuselage and rudder done. (we
could actually combine our projects and Fly one) :)
There are the two Bill Scribbs (JR & SR) down in Vancouver WA who are both building
one each.
There is Chris from Seattle who has modified a 701 out to what the 750 is now (sorry
Chris I forgot your last name).
Those are just the ones I could remember off the top of my head in this state.
I think there are a few more certainly if you include the 750s that are springing
in to action every minuet.
Mike O'Neil Is a friend of mine who is presently building a 601/Corvair combo who
is planning to build a 750/Corvair as well.
We will have squadrons all over the World!
MOO HA HA HA :)

The thing thats confounded me for months is what kind of switch I need for a Master
and what size fuse to go with it. Today I asked myself. Why do I even need
it? I only have basic knowledge of how to make circuits work. Beyond that I
have to seek help. So this thread has been illuminating for me. Ken points out
that adding a fuse here is basically worthless and if faulty will lose you everything.
I can now proceed. Thanks Guys.Geoff

Thanks for the ideas. The smallest bulb I had in the house was a 40 watt so that
is what I powered my box with for now. I will check out the thermo cube at
TSC later this week.
Should get chilly here this week.

When growing up on the farm in NW Wisconsin, we had a pump house. There was a
wind mill above that was disconnected from the well. And the electric pump was
above ground, with the "house" not being insulated. My Dad made foam insulated
box(the old white bead board type) that was about 18x24x24 inches. Dad had
a 75 watt bulb in there and the bottom was the uninsulated cement. It never froze...
well unless the bulb burned out, but Dad changed it every month to try
to prevent this.
Hope it helps.

Subject: | Airspeed Indicator Static Port |
List:
There has been talk lately about where to put the static port for the
airspeed. I have been flying without a static port on my 701 and my
airspeed is within 2 mph of the GPS.
I recently installed 3 1/4" pop vents in my side window. Today when I
popped opened the vent, I did see a small 1 mph change in the airspeed
indication. This is close enough for me so I won't be worrying about
installing a static port. Of course I only have the basic steam gauge
package from Zenith and no VSI.

PS - My wife helped rivet the plane and now she is enjoying riding in it
too. So far though, she has not wanted to take the controls.

The 701 in New Zealand got fitted with its third engine, a Jabiru 2200.
John told me the Corvair climbed at well over 1000'/min but in the 701 could really
only be flown solo or for short distances due to weight and fuel limitations.
I think he's keen on doing Corvairs for the bigger airframes, 601XL etc,
just it wasnt ideal in the 701.
