List,
here is what i did to locate my remote compass.
i had a tough time calibrating ( like off by 90 deg. ) . i found one of my rudder
cables was highly magnetized.
i degaussed it but it still had some residual magnetism.
a good friend and IA told me to get a cheap auto compass from Wally World and slowly
and carefully move it around in the area you want mount the compass. you
will see the heading change as you come near wires ( everything should be on
) and or parts containing iron.
when you find a magnetically neutral spot - that will be an ideal location for
the remote compass.
i must tell you that Dynon was very good to work with. the compass is VERY accurate
and calibrated better than any i have worked with before. most problems are
builder induced as i can vouch for.

There's probably lot's of switches available to do this job, just has to
be PBNC of adequate amperage. My comment is a big HERE HERE to using
double switches in series! This is simple and avoids nasty damage...

Heh, heh... those damned limit switches. Seems they're not very
rugged. I searched the archives (Zenith list) and found someone
discovered the ones Zenith supplied with flap actuators are no longer
made, but there is a replacement unit. They're also made by Honeywell,
rated at 15 amps. The replacement is actually a two-parter. The
microswitch and the roller/lever arm. The switch is about $8 and change
and the roller/lever is about $11 and change from
www.gopherelectronics.com. (There are a million part numbers for
microswitches.) The mounting holes are not of the same pattern as the
old ones. I don't have the part numbers handy but can get them for you
in a couple days if you can't find the post in the archives. The reason
I ordered one is because I want to use two on the down-travel side. If
there is only one, and it fails, and the pilot relies on that switch to
shut off the flap motor at full deflection, the flaperon bellcranks poke
holes in the bottom skin, and you get who knows how many degrees of
flaps--maybe enough to be catastrophic. So I'm using two switches wired
in series so if either one or both work, the circuit is opened. On the
up-travel end, there is a crow-bar terminal to stop any override in case
of a failed microswitch. (Speaking of the -801.)

I'm not an expert but it seems to me as a student pilot, when you are
endorsed for solo flight, it is SEL (single engine land) and not airplane
model specific so it's not up to the CFI which plane you fly. Within the
scope of your student rating you can fly all the hours you want, and finish
the test phase, then do the balance of your PPL in your own plane. It is
also legal to have a second test pilot on board to perform tasks you deem a
part of the testing that require a second crew member(like data collection).
It's one of the technicalities that allow an instructor to go with you.
Saying that, I am on my 3rd homebuilt project and would NEVER suggest that a
student pilot do the initial test flights, because of the little bugs that
may show up and be quite scarry. Both of my initial flights were white
nuckle deals and were just issues of minor rigging adjustments needed. So I
forget where you are in this process but generally I'd say get checked out
in the same plane you're building to get comfortable with it's handling and
let someone else do the first 2 or 3 test flights in your plane. After that
you'll have any adjusting of the plane figured out and have a fun and
exciting time doing your testing.
All the best to you,

This is interesting, my top rear fuselage skin looked like that also.
Now I am thinking that it came from Zenith like that. I cleaned with
MEK, then precote and Scotchbrite and it came out fine.
Just finished the 40 hrs, took my first passenger Sunday, (my wife).

I had a piece that got damp in the wrapping paper. Top rear fuselage

just fine with some stuff I found at Home Depot.

When a CFI signs off a student to fly, its for a specific make and model of
aircraft. An intelligent instructor will also ok the student for a specific
number of days to solo that aircraft.....
I assume the CFI could sign off for an experimental but the liability would
be tremendous...
And then the insurance would be waaaay off the chart.
The instructor is also responsible for the student when he/she is alone.

Off list, I have received a resounding NO to the question of a CFI in flight--although
HE is necessary, I am NOT. That is what I suspected.
Now the other question, for those who have done this, do I the builder sign off
Phase 1 based upon my test pilot's reports or does the pilot himself sign the
log book?
I can find CFIs all over the place willing to solo me , so long as it is not Phase
1, once I get my US medical in June of 2009.
I have a feeling we will have enough information on the airframe by 6/3/09 for
my CFI to make an educated decision.
Good news for my continued test flights... originally the FAA had three proposals
to extend class bravo for OHare, one basically took my test area away, one
had the "Sabrina notch" for KARR and one took just 1/3 of a mile away from my
Eastern edge (which was too populated anyhow.) The later seems to be the one
the FAA is going with. Thank you FAA!

Sabrina,
Keep one thing in mind. With the election of our new President you can expect several
new and ever changing TFRs in the Chicago area. While we won't be surprised
to see you in the news in the future. We don't want to see your plane being
escorted by black helicopters and F-16s.
As far as signing off for the 40 hours I think that would be a very good question
for the EAA.

Just a coincidence. I know how mine got wet (a very small leak during a very heavy
rain) and the only way Zenith is to blame is that they packed that particular
piece at the bottom of the stack.

Good point...
I don't have my charts here at my dorm room, assuming the southern most 3 mile
TFR today is over the presidential home, if you extend it to 30 miles, is any
of KARR's airspace affected?

I just checked my log book for my private pilot license. I was checked off
to fly a Cessna 172. I was also told by my instructor that I was to use this
plane only. I do not know if it was for insurance reasons or what, but it
was very specific on the plane and it was for 90 days. Even now that I have
my license, I have to get checked out in any other type of plane that I want
to rent. That I am sure is for insurance reasons.

Chicago Executive, Schaumburg, DuPage, Naper, Brookeridge, Lewis, Joliet, Clow,
Midway, Gary, Frankfort, Lansing, Meadow Creek, Griffith, Hobart, Bult, Porter
Aurora is just outside, so that is good, but WOW!

Subject: | Re: MS number for the Zenith Sprl Cap O-Ring |
"Just curious - what went wrong with the original o-rings?"
Craig,
My aircraft has been sitting outside for 12 months now at KARR. The Viton o ring
is rated at -8C where as Nitrile is rated at -25C. (Viton can withstand +204
C compared to +121C but what good is that for a fuel cap seal.)
At KARR, we can easily get below -8C several times a year. The Viton is twice
as hard and has only 60% of the tensile strength. So too, it is 10X the price.
I decided to switch to Nitrile o rings after last Fridays flight. On take off,
beyond the go/no go point on 18 (a short runway, 9/27 is closed) the sealing
lever of the right cap popped upthe plane was just refueled and the o ring must
have not seated properly. Immediately the fuel pressure dropped on the right
pump and the Dynon sounded an alarmapparently the Facet pump could not overcome
the draw out of the tank. This was the first alarm during 10 months of
test flights. The tower noticed the contrail and asked if assistance was required.
In just one left circuit two gallons were sucked out. The cap remained
in place but not sealed. The pilot turned off the external lighting, informed
the tower he had one good tank and pump and landed without incident. My pilot
was surprised that the overflow tube/vent did not prevent the fuel from being
sucked outit probably helped but was not large enough. Upon ground inspection,
the overflow vent was clear and the o-ring was loose compared to the o-ring
on the left tank cap. The viton o-rings will be replaced tomorrow.
An engineer who was kind enough to review the problem said I would have been better
off loosing the entire cap, with such a large opening the fuel would not
have been sucked out as easily as it was with a slightly raised seal. I don't
know if he is correct, but I have heard stories of C150s taking off and hearing
a clang, clang for a while before the fuel cap rips off. They seem to have
made it to their destination unaware.

Howdy Bill,
Saw your posting on the Zenith list
http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?t=50611
I was wondering if you might have a piece of that corroded aluminum
left over. If you do, would you be willing to cut a piece of the
worst-looking stuff and send it to me? Something the size of a business
card or so would be plenty. If you send me some, I'll take it to work
and do some analysis that might tell you what caused the corrosion. I'd
be able to tell if it was biological, humidity, or caused by something
else. I'm a materials engineer and so I have access to all kinds of
analysis equipment at work. No guarantee I'll find a solid answer, but
my time and effort is free so all you have to loose is a piece of
corroded aluminum!
I'm storing some parts in my basement, some in the living room, and
some in the garage. I've been curious about corrosion during storage
and so you're problem could provide some good evidence.
Let me know.

This is interesting, my top rear fuselage skin looked like that also.
Now I am thinking that it came from Zenith like that. I cleaned with
MEK, then precote and Scotchbrite and it came out fine.
Just finished the 40 hrs, took my first passenger Sunday, (my wife).

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater
degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness,
incapacity or neglect.
I had a piece that got damp in the wrapping paper. Top rear fuselage
skin that looked much like that. There was no pitting and it cleaned up
just fine with some stuff I found at Home Depot.

On the advice of Mark Jones, I ordered some AN fittings
from Murdock. They, or their sister company Adaptors, Inc. have all those
fittings you've been tearing your hair out to find. ACS and Wick's don't
have 50% the selection!
Customer service is outstanding. I screwed up on my first
order (I know none of you have ever done that) and an RMA was
immediately issued, with shipping credit!!
I'm a VERY happy camper, and highly recommend these

Contact Bing, they have a manual that will help you tune the carb and pick

Subject: Zenith-List: Carburetor
Hello Bobby:
Although I am FAR from an expert on Bing CV (constant velocity) carbs, i can
attempt to explain the theory of what is happening....
At idle you are running exclusively through the idle circuit. As you crack
open the throttle, there are transition circuits that come into play. When
you get to 1500 you are running "on the needle" that sticks through the main
jet, efffectively closing off the size of the main jet fuel flow until the
needle retracts....from 3/4 throttle to wide open you're on the main jet
only.
Transition circuit problems are very difficult to diagnose. Sounds like you
are running very rich through this circuit. I would recommend a note to
Jabiru USA - Pete knows these things better than anyone. The other source
of information is "The Carb Doctor"
http://www.bingcarburetor.com/
who is the official importer of Bing carbs and parts here in the USA. The
manual is worth every penny. It's been a long time since I had to access
this info, but every owner of an old BMW "airhead" motorcycle has had to
deal with these carbs at least once !!
After some thought...check your float height. If it is set too high that
would cause a rich running engine.....
Good Luck

List,
my 3300 Jab idles fairly good at 800 ~ 900 Rpm when i crack the throttle off
idle at about 1050 to 1300 it will puff black smoke. at 1500 rpm it will
smooth
out.
has any one changed jets or needle to fix the idle and low end mixture.
i think if i change the needle jet to a smaller size then it would run too
lean
at cruise.
this would call for a change in needle configuration.
i gotta do something. any help would be appreciated.

OK, I just checked the regs and found: You need a endorsement for each
make and model of airplane you intend to solo in. Meaning you need to
find a rental to get checked out in, then you can fly your own plane of
the same make and model.
The checkout is a one time deal and your student cert. lasts for 2 years
(should be enough time to do 40 hrs.)You can also get a new medical/
student cert. after 2 years and the original checkout is still valid.
There is no 90 day rule.
I wasn't sure about the checkrides cuz I flew 4 different models of
plane during my solo phase, but I did get checked out in (don't tell, 3
of them). Anyway once you get your private or sport the checkrides are
only for rental purposes to satisfy insurance requirements, you are
licensed for any plane in the category of your license.

That is what my instructor told me. He had to sign my book for another 90
days. Now that I have my license, the rental aircraft owners around here
require that I make 3 take off and landings for insurance reasons, within 90
days, or I will have to be checked out again by an instructor. Not a requirement
for the FAA but for insurance.

Subject: | Edge Distance At Ends Of Rib Flanges |
I don't want to ask ZAC too many questions, so I'll try the list on this
question. I am laying out the rivet lines for my 601XL ailerons. The rivet
line through the top skin into the front skin flange and top rib flanges is
positioned at 10mm from the front of the skin (midway on the 20mm front
flange). According to my measurements, these rivets will not meet the
minimum edge distance requirements from the front of the rib flanges,
because the way the ribs are manufactured, there is about a 4mm to 5mm gap
between the front rib flange and the start of the top flange. So with the
thickness of the front skin figured in, my edge distance from the front edge
of the rib flanges will only be about 4mm. I can't come up with a way to
meet the minimum - all I could do is add another rivet, but the plans just
show a normal pitch 40 on the remaining rivets. Does anyone know if this is
an issue, or is it acceptable for this particular edge distance not to meet
the minimum? I know when I built my stabilizer, there was a specific note
that said I did not need to worry about this end-of-rib-flange edge
distance, but I don't want to assume that it applies in all cases. Any help
would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave Van Lanen

In the past, on the 2200 jab of a friend , we were confronted to the

As you said Tracy, problem was coming from the position of the floats.
When you hold the carburetor upside down, the level of the float must be
absolutely parallel to the edge of the carburetor .
You can correct this easily by bending smoothly the little piece of
metal
that will control needle movement.
If your motor is brand new, check also if your needle is really clean ..
we
also have had problems with extra small parts of rubber coming from fuel

Stuck by temperature and impeaching good movements . No way to see it

Subject: | Re: New engine mount now ready to ship |
I have been flying 5 years and 10 months now. And let me tell you, the flight
instructors in Canada let you fly, especially when it is your equipment and not
theirs. You actually have full spin training (three revolutions before they
give you the controls) and off field emergency landing practice (wheels touching
the grass) before any solo. Since I already soloed on my 14th birthday 13
hours before my birth hour, I really see no need to solo on my 16th birthday.
My medical examiner for Canada lives in Florida, he can also issue U.S medicals.
I figure I will go to Disney World for free on my birthday and get my
medical the next day.
A sponsor has suggested that I fly their Inspiration 2 for CNN but Juan was complaining
about it vibrating and a terrible rate of climb: "400 fpm on the 0-200
at 70 mph climb out, versus 3300 went up at 1100 fpm at 70 mph with two aboard
at climb out. much less vibration than the 0-200"
So too, others have suggested I solo in an RV-12 as part of a movie a cool NYC
producer is putting together about homebuilding--as you may have heard, part of
the movie was filmed at Air Venture 2008.
The great thing about both Zenith and RV is they are both supportive of whichever
decision I make--they both want what is best for me. Really cool.
My aircraft with an O-200a has less vibration than any 3300 my test pilot has flown
and nearly triple I2's 400 fpm climb rate even at 1300 pounds on a hot, humid
August day.
To please both ZENITH and RV, I might just wait until I get back to Chicago in
mid-June, get my driver's license first, drive to the airport, sign the SABRINA
out of Phase 1, complete a CFI check ride, get the required signature and solo
with no cameras, no nothing. (OK, maybe an on-board camera.)
You guys are the best... I would not be where I am without all of you.
