Great 1st flight video. I kind of needed that video after spending Sunday afternoon
doing registration paperwork.
Very good first landing. I hope mine joins yours in the flying 601 category soon.

Nice Job Andy. That shine was unbelievable. For some reason, standard gear XL's
look so much better than tri-gear! The tail wheel looks larger than normal...
was that your design or the standard Zenith tail wheel? The video also was
great, especially the contrail... how did you do that? :-)
Send me or William and Grace some first flight photos for inclusion with the zenvair.com
site.
Way to go!

Subject: | Germany First to Lift Grounding order! |
Hello friends
good news for the European XL Fleet. :)
http://www.zenairulm.com/News/index_files/Page658.htm
*When the Dutch CAA grounded all CH 601 XL in the Netherlands based on the
preliminary findings of engineers investigating the September 14th accident
of a locally built and registered aircraft, Germany was the first country t
o
adopt a Dutch recommendation to ground all such aircraft. Today, almost six
weeks after issuing its Airworthiness Directive halting all CH 601 XL
flights in Germany, the German DAeC reversed its grounding order, thereby
allowing all owners and pilots of German-registered CH 601 XL to again fly
their aircraft.
The German DAeC's swift grounding action was initially based on statements
found in a preliminary accident report issued by the Dutch Safety Board.
When the BFU (Germany's aviation accident investigation office) was not abl
e
to confirm the validity of these statements through internal design review
and/or inter-agency corroboration, it concluded that the design remained
airworthy, as type-certificated by the DAeC. As a precautionary measure, an
d
until all findings for the Dutch investigation are in, the DAeC is
nevertheless imposing a number of temporary measures on the aircraft - whic
h
it feels can only increase operational safety of the aircraft as well as
improve regulatory compliance.
These measures include the following:
1) Pilots must ensure that the control cable tension of the aircraft has
been checked and recorded as per Zenair's Service Bulletin #ZE-2008-01.
2) Prior to the first flight after this grounding period, the owner of the
aircraft must complete a standard Weight and Balance check of the aircraft.
3) Items #1 and #2 above must be signed off by a German inspector 5th Class
;
Flights may commence as soon as reporting forms have been mailed to DAeC.
4) VNE of the aircraft shall be temporarily set at 180 Km/h; A clearly
visible placard must indicate this on the panel.
5) Until further notice, the aircraft may not be flown with any baggage on
board.
Nick Heintz of Zenair Sarl expressed great relief at the common-sense
approach of the German CAA: "While we understand that the temporary speed
and baggage restrictions may inconvenience pilots a little until they are
lifted, Zenair is very happy to see that according to the experts, the CH
601 XL design continues to meet or surpass all airworthiness requirements."
He added that he was pleased with the DAeC's first two conditions (proper
cable tension and current weight & balance) as these should be standard
procedures for all aircraft, and that adherence to proven airmanship tasks
and responsibilities such as these will make flying safer and more enjoyabl
e
for all sport pilots and their passengers. Added Heintz: "We hope that by
having Germany, issuer of the CH 601 XL type-certificate, take this very
important first step, other countries will soon follow with their own
similar actions [reverse their grounding ADs].
The lifting of the German grounding order has been communicated to all
German CH 601 XL owners by mail. All necessary explanations and compliance
steps are listed on the new three-page airworthiness directive:
Luftt=FCchtigkeitsanweisung LTA-Nr. LSG 08-011-1*.

I had to look through the entire series of pictures for a while to
figure out just what this is a picture of. It appears to be the point
where the upper rear edge of the forward wing root fairing meets the
roof of the cabin. The same gap is visible on both wing roots (see http://www.ch750.ca/photoalbum/CH750_detail/photo559.htm)
. It doesn't look normal, but the fairing is an odd shape that might
be difficult to form with out leaving that gap. The rivet might just
be filling in an extra hole.

Subject: | Change of tailwheel on 601XL |
Folks:
I had been much less than pleased with the 8" Matco T8 tailwheel that
came with my 601XL/TD kit. I found it very unresponsive, usually
requiring full pedal deflection and braking to get any turn going and
then it was quite difficult to control. This might have been due to the
way I connected the steering springs to the rudder horn? I even paid
Zenith to bend me a new tail spring to a 40=B0 angle, so that the pivot
axis would be nearly exactly vertical. All to no avail.
So I forked out the ~$350 for a small Maule tailwheel (SFSA) with the
solid tire and new compression-type springs. Much better control now.
Easy breakouts for quick turns. No shimmy problem. Does ride a bit
rougher, as you would expect, compared to the pneumatic one. But I like
the slightly lower stance, too, and am well pleased.
Anyone who might want a barely used Matco T8 tailwheel ($216 from AS&S)
for $70 plus shipping, let me know off list. I would probably make you
a good deal on a tail spring, too, as I am thinking of going back to the
original spring, whose angle is closer to right for the Maule tailwheel.

Andy-
Tell your son I liked the "Big airplane/little airplane" transition.
Between the jet and the quick glimpse of a military plane in the
background while you were taxiing back, it looks like you share air and
ramp space with the whole zoo!
Two thumbs up!
