Consider the ground swelling. I'd really like to see how you did it and a materials and any other instructions. I won't be a Sun N Fun but I have little doubt that we will cross paths in the future and if we do the info will be worth several beers. -------- W.R. "Gig" Giacona 601XL Under Construction See my progress at www.peoamerica.net/N601WR Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=224209#224209

N601JD my 601XL with a Jabiru 3300 took to the air for the first time last Friday at Avery County Airport (7A8) in Spruce Pine, NC. Its a quickbuild kit that I started in April 07. The obligatory Youtube video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIVt40B5dLc. Its short and a bit shaky so be careful if you get motion sickness :-) The flight went well with only a couple of minor squawks: 1. Need to add a stop to the throttle @ low RPMS to prevent the engine from stopping when the throttle is pulled too far back to idle. The US Jabiru guys recommend a small cable stop added to the throttle cable at the carb to prevent this. 2. Aileron trim is wired backwards, Oops, didn't notice a real need for the aileron trim though 3. Experiment with my Sensenich Ground adjustable prop and also re-jetting the Bing carb to maximize performance. CHTs and EGTs looked good though, perhaps I wont have to spend too much time messing with cooling issues. Woo hoo, now only 38 more hours till the end of Phase 1... If only I had remembered to turn on my in cockpit video recorder, I'll do that next time...once the darned weather clears up again. Thanks to all the list members who helped with questions during the build process. Thanks, John Davis Burnsville, NC N601JD - 601XL/Jab 3300 Now Flying!!!!

Subject: Corvair engine for sale
I have a disassembled, partly cleaned 1965 Corvair RH 110 engine for sale (TI007RH). The stock size 8409 crank has been polished, magnafluxed and modified per Flycorvair.com specs. It has NOT been nitrided. The 3878566 heads are very rebuildable. One head has minor repairable damage from 2 dropped valve seats. Cylinders are nice and need only minor honing. The rods are good cores for rebuilding. All other stock Corvair parts required for flight modification are included. I have purchased the following parts from Flycorvair.com which are also included: Deep Sump Oil Pan Oil Pan installation kit, including modified pickup Rebuilt Rear Oil Accessory Case Hybrid Studs & safety shaft Rebuilt, dual bushed distributor, missing the points plate I will also include a #167 Harbor Freight air rivet puller with Zenith modified heads and a CD that includes 4-years of research on building a Zenith 601 and Corvair engine. This research includes webpage favorites, extensive parts Excel spreadsheet and Microsoft Visio stencils for aircraft panel design. Also included are printed, three-ring binder copies of the following: FAA AC20-27F Certification and Operation of Amateur Aircraft FAA CAC 43.13-1B/2A, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection & Repair FAA H 8083-1 Weight & Balance Handbook FAA AC90-89A, Flight Testing Handbook Total invested over $1600.00, asking $800.00 or best offer. I will pack for shipment on a pallet. Buyer pays shipping. I prefer Southern California pickup. I will not sell any of the parts separately. Buyer should either have or purchase William Wynne's conversion manual. Any interested parties please respond off list. I will email a complete detailed parts list of what I have which also includes parts need for the full modification. I no longer read the Zenith list as I have moved to a new hobby with my 1963 Corvair convertible Turbo Spyder. I look forward to hearing from you, Dave Thompson Dave.thompson@verizon.net 714-334-3833 Westminster, California

Subject: Re: Open canopy accident
Zenith listers,This is a very interesting topic for me and I feel qualified to add to the conversation. =C2- I have had 2 inadverdant =C2-open canop y experiences with my CH601XL. =C2-Gratefully no one was injured and no me tal was bent. =C2-The first opening occured on the second day of my 40 hou r fligh testing. =C2-Day 1 was a great day and I was eager to fly my newly fledged bird the following day. =C2-At the time I was flying out of a loc al grass strip. =C2-As I was taking off I progressed a bit further down th e field and hit a small bump that made the aircraft jump into the air and po pping the canopy open at the same time. =C2-Let me say it wasn't anything like when the old flight instructors trick of a Cessna or Piper door opening in flight. =C2-THIS SUCKED! My vision was blocked by the canopy, the cano py could not be shut in flight, the propeller slipstream =C2-pressurized t he canopy and there was a tremendous amount of drag, confusion, noise, wind and maps and stuff flying around the cockpit. =C2-The distraction of the e xperience was intense, however, I did my best to fly the airplane. =C2-Onc e "stabilized" I was able to climb albeit slowly and I was able to declare a n emergency, a fellow pilot on the ground was able to talk to me and help me visually land the plane as I dealt with the canopy moving about. =C2-I la nded, got my "sh.....t together", said a prayer of thanks, took a little tim e to check things out and I spent the rest of the day flying my aircraft wit hout incident. That experience got me thinking and once I got home I realized that I just wasn't that confident about the latching mechanisms designed by Zenith and installed by me. =C2-I did some soul =C2-searching and then some serious research and design and I bought some specialty latches from Mc Master Carr that would give me some rock solid redundancy in terms of keepin g my canopy latched. I guess trying to get both barrels to lock while the ca nopy shifts around is a recipe for one barrel not to fully engage the latch. =C2-My retrofit works great as long as I use it as you will see by my nex t sorry tale. After my first experience with the canopy and about a years wor th of flying with my retrofit latches, I decided to take my Father (and co-b uilder partner) flying. =C2-I sure everyone has heard of the "sterile cock pit", well I wish I practiced it on this day. =C2-My Dad bless his heart, was having all sorts of difficulty's with his seatbealt and then it was some thing with his headset. =C2-Well in terms of human factors =C2-the error chain =C2-was forming due to the distractions in trying to get my Pops' c omfortable in his seat, I basically forgot to use my checklist and =C2-as a result I forgot to latch my canopy with my retrofit latches. =C2-Run-up was fine, we took the runway and probably 50 feet in the air all hell broke loose when the canopy opened in flight. =C2-This time my Zenith was at ver y close to gross on a 70 degree day and you know what, I scared the bejezzuu ss out of myself and my poor Dad. =C2-We climbed (really slow), communicat ed and confessed and then we safely landed. My Father was able to hold the c anopy down so I could fly the plane with little distraction, but no dice on getting the canopy to close. =C2-My poor Father was so unerved by the expe rience that he chose to call it a day, and rightly so, =C2-shame on me as a pilot and I called it a day as well. =C2-Embarressed you bet, pride hurt -you know it, feeling very unprofessional and juvenile.First Rule- Always fo llow your checklist do not commit it to memory don't get comfortable with yo ur aircraft. =C2-2nd Rule- Sterile cockpit procedures when you have a pass enger. =C2-3rd Rule ALWAYS FLY THE PLANE!!! =C2-I would not wish these e xperiences upon my worst enemy. =C2-However, being the novice optimist and scientist/test pilot I do know one thing that my airplane is flyable with t he canopy open, it might not be comfortable and its definitely un-nerving, b ut I know for a fact that my Zenith Zodiac CH601XL will fly as long as I cho ose to stay with the airplane an fly it no matter what occurs. =C2-I'm not enamoured with the canopy design in my iteration of the airplane, but it is what it is and I have a very healthy respect for it.I'm in no way trying to scare anyone. =C2-Just be careful!!! careful!!! careful!!! =C2-I have 2 50 plus hours on my 601/Jabiru3300 aircraft, she is my pride and joy. =C2 -The intimate knowledge and education of building one's airplane is nothin g short of an incredible life experience that I would not trade or change. =C2-I am having the time of my life and the myriad of individuals that I h ave met in the experimental home building world are just class people for su re.So don't give up before the miracle happens. =C2-Just learn from your m istakes stay humble and be open to change and always remember to fly the pla ne.Sincerely,=C2-Jeff Paris N196ZP CH601XL Jabiru 3300EAA Tech. Hey Gang, I'm pretty new to the list but I'd like to share a tool I've found to be quite handy over the years. I'm sure many of you know already and some have probably shared it here at one point but anywho, it's called the Jawhorse. It's like a saw horse and vise in one collapsable unit. Some great features include; easy storage, very stable, almost all steel, the "vise" is foot activated, the jaw will hold material up to 36" in width. It's awesome when you need that extra set of hands, great for drilling metal and wood. You can see it here http://www.performancetoolcenter.com/rk9000.html Scroll down and there's a cool video. From: Cndmovn <cndmovn@gmail.com>
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Cndmovn <cndmovn@gmail.com> Subject: Packing and moving a 601xl Here is a handy tip. If you have to move/store a 601xl they fit perfectly into a 16ft POD storage unit. I hung my wings on the sides via the cargo straps I used to pull the wing skin down. I tied the tail up in with the eyelet in the unit at the rear and blocked the wheels to the floor. I also used a cargo strap to pull the main wheel down to the floor at the front. There was 2" to spare between the wheel and the door on the unit. Cheers!

Subject: Corvair distributor hold down
I have had these distributor hold downs made and if anyone wants one please send me a message off list and I will get your information. They are made from 304 stainless and come with the self locking nut and washer. I myself check the distributor before every flight and don't like the wire hold downs that Chevy used on the corvair so I had these made and as far as I know they weren't copied from anyone because I would have bought one if they were available. Auto Zone sells one for like $15.00 but this one is much stronger and won't rust. Here are some pics of it.
