Geoff.
My canopy bubble stayed wrapped up for about six months.? I unwrapped it to do
the initial canopy fitting.? It sat under my fuselage on a sheet of that "sponge
paper" ZAC uses for packing for about a year.? I had it on and off the canopy
frame at least a dozen times. I peeled off strips at the screw holes to do
the clecoeing and fastening.? I scored the sheet where I wanted to peel the strips.?
Don't do that !? I got barely visible scratches in the acrylic from that
scoring. That protective sheet was really looking groady by this time.? When
it came time to peel it, it came off with no problem. It was really neat to see
that crystal clear plastic after looking at that dirty, opaque protective sheet
for so long. I don't think you will have any problem.

Like Jay, mine sat around for a while - five years in my case. But it
never sat outside and never in the sun. I peeled back the protective
material with no problem after that time. Try peeling it back at a
corner. If it won't come, try spraying a little Lemon Pledge on the
edge and see if that helps. The Pledge won't hurt the canopy.

If you happen to be using a Dynon EMS (and probably some of the others as well)
there are a couple of extra ports that can be used for just that. I probably
will add that feature at some point.

Thanks Jay. I hope it comes off as you say but my porch is enclosed only with screen.
Its unprotected from the weather, hot and cold. I can visualize unwrapping
it to see that pristine clarity. Otherwise I'll have to use the emery cloth
or maybe a disc grinder....Geoff

Geoff, hand sanding takes too long. A sandblaster will remove the
protective coating much quicker. Heck, you're IFR qualified anyway,
right?

On Dec 15, 2007 I paid my DAR $500 for the inspection. I believe it was higher
than normal because it was close to the holidays and the deadline for the special
E-LSA registrations were fast closing in on me. He said he was already starting
to be completely booked for the following January.
Jay... I don't recall how long it took to get the AC but I did get it last year
some time.

I was handed the "real pink slip" at the end of the inspection.

Check with the A&P's in your area and see if the local FSDO has any inspectors
that they've had good luck working with on field inspections and the like. Then
I would suggest contacting the inspector directly and asking how long it would
take to get the FAA (hopefully him) to come out and do it.
To my surprise we've had good luck getting two different inspectors from the Detroit
FSDO to come out the 100 miles to our little airport and all it cost us
was lunch.
Good luck!

Had my inspection done by an FAA Inspector from one of our FAA FSDO's.
Took 6 days from the time I turned in my paperwork until the actual
inspection.
No Charge and when he left I had all the final documents in hand.
Also don't forget to apply for your Repairmans Certificate at the same time.
It took about 30 days to get my "Plastic" card from the FAA.
It looks just like your "Plastic" Pilots License.

Roger,
When I built the frame of my canopy I installed two micro switches with
plunger that extend out the bottom. Those go to an alarm panel I have.
The panel uses bi color LEDs (red, green). I have two for my fuel valve
position, two for the canopy two for the cowling one for alternator and
one for engine water level.

If you are really serious about this, you should check out Al Wick's glass
panel group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GlassPanel/
He does some interesting things with his approach which utililizes a
Programmable Logic Controller. With a PLC you can have audible warnings,
which may have significant advantages during stressful parts of a flight.
In essence his glass panel would replace an EIS but add as many other
alarms as you'd like to wire into your system. E.g., right now one member
of the group is looking for folks who'd be interested in buying into a
small production run of a radar ground detector (for maybe, $300).

Just a note about your inspections. The only time you would a issue
temporary cert. is if the DAR was concerned about the aircraft being ok
for unlimited time.
I am a AB-DAR and have completed many inspections in the last few
years. I was in the first EAA-FAA AB-DAR class at Oak City and have
been back to a refresher coarse every year. Also in the spirit of
amateur built and the EAA support I try to keep the fees reasonable.
This being said I don't charge for the inspection, but charge for
the paperwork and mileage both to and from the site where the aircraft
is hangered.

Terry;
Yes I program PLCs too, that's not a bad idea, but most run on 24VDC or
more, so my 12v system would need an additional DC-DC converter (it's
not
cheap either).
I like Tim's idea about the bi-colored LED, that way you know that the
lamp
is not burned out or something.
I put a secondary slide lock on my 601, it has a side opening canopy and
has
popped open a few times on the ground, so I added the locks just to be
sure,
but I'm thinking about a XL stile on my next plane.

If you are really serious about this, you should check out Al Wick's
glass
panel group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GlassPanel/
He does some interesting things with his approach which utililizes a
Programmable Logic Controller. With a PLC you can have audible warnings,
which may have significant advantages during stressful parts of a
flight. In
essence his glass panel would replace an EIS but add as many other
alarms as
you'd like to wire into your system. E.g., right now one member of the
group
is looking for folks who'd be interested in buying into a small
production
run of a radar ground detector (for maybe, $300).

Roger,
When I built the frame of my canopy I installed two micro switches with
plunger that extend out the bottom. Those go to an alarm panel I have.
The
panel uses bi color LEDs (red, green). I have two for my fuel valve
position, two for the canopy two for the cowling one for alternator and
one
for engine water level.
