I have the Cincinnati FSDO close by so I hand carried my paperwork there. The
FAA inspector called me about two hours later and we set up an inspection date
for the next week. I was handed my official 8130-7 Special Airworthiness Certificate
at the end of the inspection. Cost = $0
It was the cheapest part of my whole project!
Good luck,

Hi Jeff
Jeff your plane is gorgeous and I think it's mainly because of the color scheme.
Ive toyed with the idea of grey for my 701 but wasnt sure it would look all
that good. Now I know. The orange really sets it off. I'd like to consider this
further. Could you give me the paint specsManufacturer. Type. Colors.
It's now my dual screens ScreensaverYou're famous..Geoff

Gig,
Look at the EAA list of DARS at
http://members.eaa.org/home/govt/help/ab_dar.asp.
Mine was done by an EAA DAR for only his expenses (he had a drive a ways
to get to me).
Good Luck,

Fellow builders - As I am considering the Corvair for my powerplant, along with
the E-81 or O-200, I am faced with a personal challenge that appears I would
have to live with a long time with the Corvair that maybe someone could help
me with.
Tho I give respect to other Corvair drivers that maybe, just maybe, they feel 'beauty
is in the eye of the beholder' - and I also feel the same as Will Rogers
when he said ' I never met an airplane - er, man, I didn't like' yet I
wonder, does anyone use a different cowling for the Corvair other than the one
I see used in all the pics I've seen?
Or should I resign myself every time I pull the plane out of my hangar hopefully
in the future to hearing Lyle Lovett's song 'She was Ugly from the Front' playing
in my head?....... [Shocked]
Just wondering...

Dave,
I have the "usual" cowling for the Corvair and my 601XL.? Are you saying my airplane
is UGLY ??
We're going to have to take this one outside to avoid breaking things inside !!?

Dave,
If you don't like the looks of the usual corvair cowl, nothing says you can't design
and build one yourself. I happen to like the looks of the William Wynne
cowl. I decided to go with it simply because it is less work and will get me
in the air faster.
Another consideration is that you don't see the front of your plane when you're
flying, so who cares how ugly or pretty it is. [Wink]

I haven't seen a different cowling in a Corvair 601 but if you decide to make your
own design, you will have to consider a rear starter conversion like the KR
guys do. The front starter conversion will give you less design freedom.

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder but if you don't think the WW Corvair
cowl look better than all the other you should have your eyes ripped out......
JUST KIDDING.
A lot goes into the design of a nosebowl and cowling or at least it should. The
WW design has shown it will keep the engine cool and has about the minimum drag
you can have in the front of a 601.
Don't forget. If you design your own cowling or use a cowling that was designed
for another engine you are going to have to design your own baffle system and
that would suck.
Add to that the fact that you have easier and better access to more of the engine
than just about any cowl I've seen on any plane certified or experimental and
you have winner.
That said, by the time you get to actually installing the it the last thing in
the world you are going to want to do is design a nosebowl and cowling.

Hi, List,
A few weeks ago, someone wanted to know where to get
seat foam. Some things came up at home that I had to attend to and I am
just now getting back with the information. It took me a couple of weeks
to find the web address for buying 1" memory foam. The place is in
Wichita, KS. Go to their web site:
www.buckleyind.com
I bought three pieces 4'x4'x1" for about fifty bucks per. I got
one of each density: soft, medium and firm. This was cheaper than ACS or
Wicks.
Happy Building!
God Bless!!

Well.... thanks to all who responded- whether to my question or not -
In answer to that question if there are any other cowlings being used for the
many 601's out there I hear that use a Corvair, I'll assume there probably are
not any, other than the WW one. I wasn't looking to design an original, and
I am aware of the difficulty and considerations needed to build one as much as
I can be without ever having built one, I just wanted to see if there might be
an alternative to the popular one that I could use.
Guess I shouldn't have used Lyle's song to illustrate my reason for an alternative
- my apologies to the 'cowling sensitive' - but I couldn't resist!....sorry
'bout that.
Despite being offered to have my eyes gouged out, taken out back and taught a lesson,
or listen to repetitive insistance on how beautiful she is!, Istillfeelsheisbuttuglybutthatsjustmyopinionsopleaseenjoyyourcowling!!!
Thanks again everybody!
Dave

You could do like I'm planning on doing and make your own. If you're a member
of EAA they have a nice how too in their builder's articals.
