Subject: | Question about the incidence change in the Zodiac 650 |
Hi guys,
I would like to know if the there's any change in the center spar or the wing ribs
of the Zodiac 650. I need to know in order to decide if I'm going to upgrade
my plans.
I'm building a 601XL and I would like mine to have the wing incidence of the 650.
I like the idea of better visibility during approach.
I'm plans building and I already build all of my wing ribs and I will start making
the center spar very soon. If there is a change in the center spar but not
on the ribs I'm still on time to include this change and I will upgrade the plans,
but if the ribs are different, then I'm too late and I would not upgrade
and keep the 601XL incidence.
Thanks

One easy way to change the incidence during approach is to lower the flaps.

Good news, William. No change in the ribs or center spar. The 650 wings
are virtually the same as the 601XL. The primary changes required for the
new angle of incidence are in the front & rear wing uprights (65-B-13-1 & 2)
and the attach plate (65-B-5-4).

It sounds like you're getting close Gig! It also sounds like your DAR is a good
one although I have discovered that both the FAA and DARs have their fair share
of less than thorough inspections. And I don't think that $500 is out of
line for DARs. In some cases they may only do a few per month, but they are there
quickly (usually) and the training they need is considerable. Of course
free is almost always better.
Don't forget to send that first flight pic to me (of your 601XL with a WW Corvair engine) at http://zenvair.com so I can get it in the lineup!

There are good and bad in every vocation and advocation. I think I'm going to get
my money's worth out of this DAR. I think it is interesting in fact that the
head of the FSDO airworthiness division is who first told me to contact this
guy. In fact he mentioned that he might join the DAR when he comes to El Dorado
because it has been a while since anyone from his office had been to El Dorado
and because since it had been so long since he did an EX-AB inspection that
he needed to get re-certified and that this inspector was one of the few DARs
that was certified to certify FAA personnel.
The main reason he suggested to use a DAR in general was that if the FAA finds
a problems that can't be fixed quickly is that they must terminate the inspection
and start from the beginning when they return. A DAR is not limited this way.
He can do the inspection and then return and only cover the issue that wasn't
previously right and can even issue the AW certificate with a limitation that
the issue be fixed before the AW certificate is in full force.

If there is no change to the center spar or center spar webs, then they will not
lay flush against the cabin floor, the lower spar webs were bent for the original
angle of incidence... it is one thing to bend the rear bottom center spar
web two additional degrees, it is another thing to unbend the forward spar
web of a 601XL center spar section to make it fit the new 650 angle of incidence.
Correct?

Would like to see some pics as my wing skins have not yet been riveted and I'm
keen to go the push pull rod path as well.[the Europa from England has been using
push/pull rods with great success for years] Cheers

I have been wondering if the incidence change would also make rotation
for takeoff easier. Less of the "pop-off" that I see in some videos.
It might be closer to flying itself off the runway.

Ken,
A way of avoiding the pop off you describe is to change the aircraft's decalage
by tilting the horizontal stabilizer down 2 degrees.
I have never understood how CZAW or the 650 can change the angle of incident of
the wing without changing the thrust line of the engine.
William,
Another way of gaining 2 degrees of additional view on the Zodiac is to not install
front canopy flashing 6C3-7 as shown in 6-C-3 page 10 of 11.
Since you are plans building, you may be the first 650 owner with the center spar
web set to the correct angles from the start. 6W4-1, 6W4-2

pop off has nothing to do with incendence of wing, but the landing gear set up.
if the wheels are aft of the cg line, it takes back stick to unstick the plane.
if you have the wheels in closer to the cg, the plane takes of on its own
with the right trim in place.
