I am removing my Continental 0-200, accessories, and the firewall forward from my CH701. The engine was "0" timed in 1993 (as far as my understanding but verify with me if it is critical) , and currently has slightly less than 400 hours. The engine itself is certified, but the electrical accessories, a B&C lightweight starter and B&C 8 amp alternator, are not. The alternator keeps up with landing lights, strobes, portable radio, electric fuel pump, at cruise RPM's, but with these loads at taxi it is not large enough to charge. Complete logs from "0" time. I can't find records of the mags (and can't remember right now if the are Slick or Bendix). MS carburetor. The engine runs perfectly. The oil pressure is right where you'd expect a new engine to operate. The cylinders are chrome. Oil consumption is appx 8-12 hours per quart. This engine has the Continental $200 + breather elbow found in 0-200 powered C-150 Aerobats. Oil Cooler. Last annual 4/2008 compressions were low to mid 70's/80. Relatively dry inside cowling. Always a spot on concrete from breather tube when parked Warp Drive composite ground adjustable 3 blade prop. Engine mount, pressure cowling for CH 701 if wanted. This engine is currently installed and flown appx every two weeks. I intend to remove it in April. If you are really serious about a potential purchase, would like scanned images of the logs, would like videos of it operating, pictures of the installation, or would like to come inspect please contact me. Asking $8300 for all. I'd rather sell everything all at once. I plan to advertise on Barnstormers, engine/accessories only for $7800, in the next couple of weeks. If interested leave message at (435)-734-2050 or email djonesutah@digis.net. The engine is in Northern Utah. -------- CH 701, Luscombe 8A Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=231673#231673

There's some serious opportunity for learning here. Would be interesting to see the differences between the various deburring techniques. I can't help but to wonder what a reamed spar bolt hole would look like under extreme magnification. Or the contents of an oil filter after first engine startup. Or is Nuvite really the best polishing stuff. The possibilities would be endless.... Any ideas on how much a good electron microscope costs? I wonder if a guy could build one? - Patrick -------- Patrick 601XL/Corvair N63PZ (reserved) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=231676#231676

    Subject: Corv-oil Filler Tube
Before I modify my Corvair with my trusty chainsaw and sledgehammer, I thought I'd ask a few questions: What's the consensus on placement of the filler tube? I've been thinking of either setting the tube at the top rear of one of the valve covers, or shortening it way down, and setting it somewhere in the flat top cover. Since I'm not yet quite sure how much space I'll need for the alternator, and exactly how much space will be available, I thought I'd ask and avoid the "Oh, *&#" moment that invariably follows blazing new trails over the cliff. Also, if you remove the horizontal oil filter adapter, and hang the filter vertical, is there still enough room for the rear accessory pulley? And, finally, I don't see any need for the old Delcotron saddle. Anybody have a problem with sawing it off? Thanks, Paul Rodriguez 601XL/Corvair Crank about to go for nitriding

Maybe I can make a small contribution here:? I spent much of my past life using an assortment of light and electron microscopes to help solve problems.? While scanning electron microscopy is a powerful tool (as Ben so beautifully demonstrates) my favorite instrument has always been the simple stereomicroscope.? Like SEM, these are used to study the surface of things. They have a large working distance and require no sample preparation.? You can get a high quality used one or a low quality new one for a few hundred dollars.? At home, mine gets used for removing splinters and what not.? In the shop, I have used it to help make personal judgements on some of the issues we obsess about. At my hanger, I use it to examine oil filters from my certificated ship.? The good folks at Sacramento Sky Ranch provide good counsel on simple physical and chemical tests one can use to help identify unknown particles. (link below). If you have kids around, the stereomicroscope is great for motivating them about science. Basically anything examined under a stereomicroscope is amusing, but biological stuff is best.? For man made things, the closer you look, the more ragged it appears.? For anything biological, the closer you look, the more wondrous it becomes. Even cheaper and easier, I sometimes find that questions can be resolved by examination with cheap reading glasses with crazy high diopter.? Helps my welding as well.? Sorry for rambling.
