Does anyone know if Teflon tape is auto gas compatable? I want to install a
brass fitting in a poly gas tank and thought I would use teflon tape as a
sealant for the threads on a barbed hose fitting.. Amy better ideas?
Fitting seem a little loose. Thanks in advance for your reply. Jim

Teflon tape is not recommended as it blocks up the fuel filter when it breaks up.
People have used it on external areas but I would not recommend it on any fuel
lines.

Teflon tape is compatible with auto gas, but I wouldn't use it in an
airplane. If you ever reuse the fittings, there is a risk of the
shreds of teflon tape getting into the lines and clogging things up. A
small amount of white teflon paste or something like Permatex Aviation
Form-A-Gasket would be a better choice.

Does anyone know if it's OK to drill the bottom skin to ribs before drilling the
top skins to ribs? Because of my limited space and the order I had my wing
skins stacked it would save me some time. Has anyone actually done them in this
order?

Hi Dan,
As long as the wing skeleton is leveled and jigged in place as Zenith recommends
I don't think it makes a bit of difference. Mine turned out beautifully and
I didn't follow any particular order. Hope this helps.

Yes Teflon is fine with auto gas, I have depended on it for years and year.
Use it and you won't have any leaks (especially use it with brass fittings).
Some people use it incorrectly, and it sheds and gets caught in the fuel
filter, that's true, But than again anything can be misused I guess.
When you apply it, make sure you wrap it in such a way that when you screw
the treads in it will tighten the Teflon and not unwrap it (this causes the
shedding)
Also, don't wrap the last 2 threads, that will keep it from extruding out of
the threaded area.
Hope this helps !!!!

Roger,
What you say is true - IF you NEVER take that fitting loose, for any reason.
=C2- If it is taken apart, you WILL get shredded Teflon. The shredded Tefl
on will likely get into a fuel line and eventually make its way to a filter.
=C2- Just don't ask how I am so sure about this.

Dan,
I agree with what Debo says. Keep it level length wise and get the angle right.
Fixture the position.
At that point I had two tables and made both right and left skins at the same time.
That way I only had to layout one and pilot drill through two sheets. Having
the structure set right next to the skins layout table made transferring
the measurements to the skins easy.
I know you have limited space but you could lean a couple sheets of plywood against
a wall, and cleco the two aluminum sheets to the plywood for the layout and
pilot drilling of the skins. Think lean to, or a-frame.

Jay and Others;
Yes, when removing existing fittings, always check for contamination from
Teflon, dirt, and shredded rubber (if you're using barbed fittings on
natural rubber hoses).
It's always best to flush the line, fuel or otherwise, after doing any work
which might introduce contamination into the lines.
Fuel filters should be checked (or preferable changed) every 3 months or 50
hours of operation. Having more than one fuel filter is of course
acceptable. I have 3.
One in the gassolator, one before the carb inlet and one built into the carb
inlet (a finger strainer). Also, I have one in the main tank, though it's a
screen really.
