Alan,
The glare shield edging in automotive trunk seal. I actually got mine from Zenith,
but I have seen the same thing sold in various on-line dealers like JC Whitney.
The anti-glare paint is Rust-o-leum flat black.

I have been lurking on this forum for some time and dreaming of building a Zenith
design. I have narrowed my choices down to either the 601 HD or the 650. I
have chosen these two designs as each can be built and flown as an LSA. I like
the increased payload capabilities, styling, speed potential, and ease of construction
of the 650, but I am also intrigued by the capabilities and efficiency
of the HD with a smaller engine. I would appreciate anyones insight about
this before I purchase the plans.
Thanks in advance.
Ernie

Try this for the trim, they also have all metal and all rubber trim. This and the
type Dave used, has metal in the U shaped part that covers the sheet AL. This
makes it less of a cutting edge, in my way of thinking.

Hi Ernie,
Either aircraft is a good choice. You'll have to decide if you're going
to fly in short grass strips or stay mostly on longer hard surface airports
and also if speed makes any difference to you. These are pretty close,
either will be a blast to fly. For building though, I found the Zenith
aircraft
a real pleasure to do from plans. You can buy any component you're not
be able to do yourself. I seriously like the HDS and have flown the HD too.
The HD and the 650 will provide much more climb capability than a HDS.
My HDS meets the performance requirements for LSA, but some don't
as it has to be set right to get there. I'd think the 650 might be a
better choice as Zenith has put the 601XL as the latest model to move
from the HD.
Still your decision to make and welcome to the forum.
I like the Subaru, if a few pounds heavier than the Rotax, it's much
less costly and is just as reliable as any of them. Car gas is cheaper
than 100LL too
so if you decide to go that way the path has been cleared for success a
long time ago. If I can be of help just ask.

Larry
Thank you for your reply. Most of my flying will be done from paved strips, but
I would like to have the ability to fly in and out of the occasional grass strip.
I have compared the the speed potential from the published information and
there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the two. Actual performance
data from the XL with different engine choices is available readily, but
actual data on the HD and different engines is sketchy at best. Could you suggest
where I might be able to find a more data on th HD?
Again let me thank you again for your response and I assure you this is not spam
I am merely trying to gather addition information with which to make an informed
decision.
Thanks
Ernie

You're right Ernie,
There's less than 10-15 mph difference between the 650 and the HD. The
Corvair will pull you along faster by another 5 mph, perhaps in the
neighborhood
of 115 mph, 5 mph faster than the Subaru. The Subaru has more torque on
the climb because of the redrive/horsepower curve.
The matronics archives provide a lot of space from which to obtain data
and opinions on flight, speed, problems with building and handling etc.
Magazines like Kitplanes have had articles on the HD that can be
reviewed on computer. Sport Aviation also has had some.
I'd advise a Google search too.

Thank you very much for all your help. I will do as you suggest and see what I
can find with a google search.
Thanks again

Ya, my HDS also meets the LSA requirements. To get the stall speed down, I
lowered the ailerons about 3% down (to act like flapperions) and also moved
the CG closer to the aft limit (which limits my turtle deck weight limit to
35 lbs). All this drops the stall down to 50 or 51 mph. I fly with VW
engine.

The good Lord knows you need some help with frogging down there in froggy bottom....

[quote="dredmoody(at)cox.net"]I'm currently waiting on the FAA for airworthiness
inspection so the only fogging I have experienced is while working inside the
cabin with the canopy down. In motion, I suspect that the fresh air vents
will take care of most or all fogging except for very cool / cold days. If it
becomes a problem, my plan is to remove my forward top skin after marking where
the canopy touches it. A couple of inches inside that line I will drill
a series of 3/8" diameter holes evenly spaced to allow the electronics cooling
fan to vent the warmed air up to the bubble in front. I installed a big cpu
muffin fan (~ 75 cfpm) in the support from the bottom of the panel to the firewall
early on. It keeps the area under the forward top skin from becoming
a greenhouse-like heat dome. I figure that warm air can be put to good use as
needed later on.
