I know it's just a piece of plastic but wow! I really am amazed at what you plans builders produce... simply amazed. There is a huge gulf between fitting kit-supplied parts or even producing simple parts from stock and actually manufacturing all of your parts with the precision and quality that meets or exceeds what the factory can do. It an extension of what I have told people about my plane when they seem doubtful about it. I tell them, "I worked on every piece as if my life depended on it. That Cessna out there was built by workers who may or may not be content in their jobs, using parts from the lowest bidder". Keep up the nice work Ron. From: jaybannist@cs.com Ron, Your nose gear bearing block looks great! The drawings and instructions say to drill and tap holes to bolt it to the support bracket.? I was very leery of my ability to tap a hole in plastic and have it reliably hold the block in place.? I saw a post about thru-bolting it instead and that's what I did.? You have to use a Forsner bit to countersink the bolt heads into the top surface to clear the "arms" on the strut tube.? (see photo)? I also had to put an .016 shim in the front gap between the halves.? Without that shim, I could not rotate the nose gear at all.? With it, it is still tight, but workable. The testing done so far all shows that you are not in any imminent danger so waiting for Zenith isn't totally out of the question. Mathieu seemed very positive about Zenith developing mass balancers for the ailerons. Not sure how long that will take but as I said we can safely wait for it. Then again, I know the "can do" spirit is alive and well out there so if you don't feel like waiting, have at it! I would be more interested in the mass balance if it inlcudes aerodynamic balance (spades) so the roll and pitch sense of the stick would be more equal. From: "Beckman, Rick" I made four hours O.T. this AM at my boss's request. Now, I am going home and try to make some progress on the interior of 52EB and make some seats! Then, I will make a mess as I try to finish the paint job on the fuselage. Then I will make an honest attempt to assemble this thing for final inspection. Then I will hoot and holler as I receive my pink slip!!!!! Happy Building!! God Bless!! Pat and all- I'm making the final electrical connections with the panel in place before putting in the battery and powering everything up. It worked on the bench. Famous last words. 1. I got the Homebuilders Help glass panel DVD after I was half-way through doing it the hard way. In retrospect, Mark's way will save you a ton of time. Check it out. 2. You can cut any size hole you need for the panel with a H/F - SKU P37370 fly cutter, but you have to use a drill press and wood backing. The main problem with the off the shelf tool is that the setscrews are garbage. Replace them with decently hardened ones and you'll get good results for about a $15 outlay. 3. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Radio Shack stocks .093 Molex connectors. Type in "Molex connector" and you get nada. In desperation, type in "Terminals" and on pages 6, 7, and 8 of the online catalog you'll find a batch of really tasty connectors, cheap. Picture of my console attached. Not everything is firmly screwed down yet, which accounts for the warpage. I highly recommend Jeff Small's suggestion to add a chunk of 3/4" extruded L to the bottom of the panel. It really firms up the slab of Jello you're trying to work with. To paraphase the old saying, "I'm not a fast builder, I'm not a slow builder. I'm a half-fast builder". It seems the list is a lot happier when it thinks positively. Bill, It took about 1.5 hrs to do the top skin. I did 4 passes with F9, 2 passes with C, and 1 pass with S. I used a Harbor Freight polisher with Nuvite wool bonnet for the F09, the HF polisher with HF wool bonnet for the C, and an orbital polisher with a cotton bonnet for the S. Each pass got easier and less polish was used with each pass. It actually took less time than I expected.
