Hello group ,I didn't make any parts today ,however I had a great day .I flew my Sonerai to a local fly-in at The Lake Jackson TX. airport .There were lots of planes there and my Sonerai got lots of attention ,but no awards .I have decided that with any Van's RV planes on site during the judging there is not much chance of other planes getting many awards .The judges seem to favor these planes. This morning I installed an oil pressure gauge ,next week my new prop will be sent from Ed Sterba .I will run my Franklin engine for the first time in the next week or so ,hope all goes well . This is a great thread, because it gets us back to the reason we all joined this list. I finally made my way through most of those 9,200 rivets. Yesterday I pulled my last fuselage rivet, and even managed to climb in the cockpit to make some inaugural inviso-engine noises. The pictures tell the story. Larry- Agreed. Maybe we should make it a weekly feature. Another suggestion would be a list of outlets for all those hard-to-find parts. To start things off- Oddball fuel fittings- Murdoch Industrial Fuel valves- Discount Hydraulics Obsolete schematics, etc.- Essco Now, if some lister more enterprising than me would start an Excel spreadsheet... If you're using a tool supplied by one of the aircraft houses (I suspect they're all made in some back alley in Hong Kong), the dimension when the tool is completely closed should be right. To double check, you'll find the dimension in 43-13. Hi, I was wondering if anyone on here has used the self etching primer from NAPA (#7220 which is actually sherwin williams) on their internal parts? I'm using it on the ribs and spar of the rudder and was told it was okay from several people but an A&P told me that this stuff will eventually eat through the metal thus eventually causing corrosion anyway. Cheers, - Trevor

List Its probably on the drawings right under my nose but I haven't found it. I have a Zenith main gear and Grove wheels and axles. How far from the end of the gear up to the axles? The gear would allow them to be moved up or down at least and inch. There is a hole pattern in the drawing but no vertical location. Help. Carroll

I used the SW 988 (along with a PPG product) on my RV-10 and have seen no problems. It is my understanding that it is a perfect match between application and product. If you want to hear all types of opinions ..... just search the RV-10 and other RV archives. Primer wars erupt all the time on those forums. I installed mine with the flats of the axles flush with the bottom of the main gear spring. If in doubt, the aircraft should sit level on its gear, level the fuselage and check that the nose wheel and main wheels hang on the same level. > > > > > List > Its probably on the drawings right under my nose but I haven't found > it. I looked through the RV archives as Rene' suggested. About the only criticism I found was that this primer didn't hold up as well as some others in areas where surfaces rubbed, and that it could be removed years later with MEK and scotchbrite. [No color of scothbrite referenced 8^) ]. I saw no mention of this primer leading to corrosion issues and I plan to continue using it. Ive used the 7220 from Napa, workds great, dries quick. And I'm not 100% sure, but I bet I'll be dead before this stuff corrodes through my aluminum. Everyone gets all worked up over corrosion. I'll never understand the 75 yr old guy that I saw hand dipping each of his rivets in Zinc Chromate, exposing himself to carcinogens for hours on end... Really guys, really? Where are you going to be in 20 yrs, 30 or more??? I'm 27 and not too concerned with the fact that I haven't applied corrosion protection to every surface. Ok, there's my two cents, maybe Id feel differently if I lived on the coast, in an extremely polluted city, and tied down instead of hangared, but none of those three apply. On the otherhand our .016 used on a lot of our birds is pretty thin stuff to begin with, but I'm STILL not too worked up about it. My plan is to spray the inside with corrosion x every couple of years if anything. -------- One Rivet at a Time! Just make sure that you allow for sufficient "meat" around the bolt holes. Also, use great care when drilling so that all four holes are perfectly aligned. With the thickness of the axle base being what it is the holes have to be perfectly aligned or you may not get the bolts to go in without binding. I ended up having a machinist friend drill the holes on a mill.
