Larry- Did you have it boiled out at a radiator shop or is it new? It's amazing the crud that came out of my folded fin even though it was pristine on the outside. Remember, the oil cooler is post oil filter in the loop and anything that gets dislodged goes straight to the bearings, etc. Considering how small a cooler is, the cost should me minimal. In my case, the guy at the radiator shop didn't even charge me. REALLY cheap peace of mind. Got the seat cushions layers glued together. Actually I started this Monday and ran out of glue. Had to head back to Home Depot's aviation department for more glue and finished with a quick trip to the airport yesterday. I'm going to let them sit so the bend in the cardboard backing takes a little better then off they go to the upholstery shop for covering. They are quite comfy. This photo is pre glueing and trimming. -------- W.R. "Gig" Giacona 601XL Under Construction See my progress at www.peoamerica.net/N601WR Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=245725#245725 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/seats1_834.jpg

On Monday (Labor Day), my grandson and I drove to Palm Springs CA to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Palm Springs Air Museum. After the ceremony, we drove to Chino CA and spent the night. On Tuesday we visited both the Yanks Museum and Planes of Fame Museum eating at Flo's Cafe on the airport. Can't believe all of the Warbirds on one airport. Also got a tour of the all the restoration projects in the shop by one of the volunteers at Yanks. Too many airplanes too little time. After the museums closed we drove to San Diego. Wednesday morning we toured the USS Midway in San Diego Harbor and then onto the San Diego Air Museum in Balboa Park. We took a side trip to the Museum of Natural History. Grandson took over 400 photos and hopefully we made some memories together. Really didn't accomplish much on project. Oh well. Jerry

Ron: That truck has 99% of the wing parts for a scratch-built Bearhawk riding below in those side bins between the axles. I wrapped everything up in this blue foam sheet stuff my pool installer was supposed to put between the liner and the pool walls but didn't. I saved it in the attic for four years and it came in real handy to wrap the spars and ribs. It also has my TIG welder that will be hooked up soon so I can continue welding on the steel parts to finish the wings. Thanks for noticing! Guys: I've been reading these flutter posts once again till I'm blue in the face (All my tools are packed up and I honestly don't have anything else to do right now). These planes are sturdy, stable, and safe airplanes. I've got 130 hours on mine. I have flown it round trip from Omaha to Rapid City, South Dakota and round trip from Omaha to Orleans, Indiana and most recently one-way from Omaha to Dallas, Texas. Each one of these 5+ hour (each way) trips was pure joy and full of excitement with a huge dose of accomplishment. I built almost every piece to this thing and I installed every part, piece by piece to realize a dream I have had for years. I know what's in there and I know how she flies - like a dream. Of the builders that are flying completed 601XL's - Juan, Gary, me and many others, there is a similar message - go fly and stop yammering on the internet. Then there is Jay Maynard who purchased his from a store. Jay I can understand why you keep stirring the pot here because there are hundreds of parts you don't understand. It makes sense because you wrote a check and picked up your airplane from the airplane store. No disrespect (I'm happy for you), but there is no way you can understand what most of us are talking about here. I welcome your emails, but you aren't really in the same arena as most of the guys here pulling rivets alone in the garage with a passion that an airplane purchaser can't comprehend. Lastly there are the builders that aren't flying yet. God bless you guys. When you aren't building you are worrying over the project. You wonder if you did this or that correctly months ago on a certain part. You loose sleep often wondering if you drilled the spars upside down or if you made two left parts instead of a left and a right. There is a whole list of other issues for scratch vs. kit builders, but you are out there working away by your lonesome. When you are on the computer, this noise crops up about wings falling off. Worst of all, you don't have the reinforcement of a joyride every week to remind you of what a great job you did in building your own airplane and how great the 601XL flies. Point is that if you have built one of these great airplanes and fly it regularly you say "hogwash" to all this speculation and yammering. This thing is sturdy and reliable. I do my pre-flight and fly with complete confidence once a week if time allows. If you are building and reading all this speculation, keep your chin up and keep building carefully and diligently. It will all come together and it will be a flying machine that will take you safely on many adventures. If you are losing sleep over the safety, then save up $4K+ and install a BRS. For a builder-stud like you, a BRS is no problem to install. I salute those of you with un-finished projects out in the shop who are riveting and dreaming. Take care, and Happy Flying. Well, I guess I've been firmly put in my place. I know damned good and well I don't know as much about my airplane as those of you who have been lucky enough to build one. I'm learning everything I can about my airplane, and about aviation, and it will never be enough - for me, or, apparently, for you. That doesn't mean that I'm going to stick my head in the sand about potential problems. -- Jay Maynard, K5ZC, PP-ASEL, CFI-SP http://www.conmicro.com http://jmaynard.livejournal.com http://www.tronguy.net Fairmont, MN (KFRM) (Yes, that's me!) Scott, With all due respect to you, I think you are being very unfair to Jay and many others. I have built a complete Zodiac XL from the bottom up, and mine is grounded. As I mentioned several times on this list and in other venues, I respect the decision announced by the NTSB. I don't agree with it, but I respect the organization and their "Authority" on matters like this. The kind of familiarity you and I have with this design is more than Jay's. That can have a great influence on our confidence in the design. It doesn't make us accident analysis experts. One funny experience I have had is discussion with many people both inside and out of the Zenith builder's community. To a man, every single one I have talked to outside the Zenith community tells me grounding my plane was the correct choice. All who have expressed any opinion that seemed to show some knowledge of aviation said the ailerons need to be mass balanced -- just like the NTSB said. This has included many old guys including some from the FAA, local experts, A&P mechanics, and others. It is only Zenith insiders who have suggested to me that the design is fine the way it is. 'nuff said. Paul XL grounded At 06:44 PM 5/28/2009, you wrote: >Then there is Jay Maynard who purchased his from a store. Paul: Grounded? What does that mean? Has it flown yet? Who grounded your airplane? Have you had the FAA look at it? Sorry for the ignorance but I haven't spent the time I should to catch up on your progress. Are you one of the guys who contacted the NTSB in the first place so they could attempt to ground you (and me thank you very little)? I won't prolong this nonsense anymore. You guys have fun chatting about the sky falling and I'll remain un-grounded.
