He invited me to go flying with him yesterday and I took him up on it.=C2- I was apprehensive, not about Scott=99s ability nor about his airplane; just up tight about flight in general as a result of my acc ident. The choppy air didn=99t help things, either.=C2- Scott is obviously very comfortable with his airplane and handled it very competen tly in the =9Cbouncy=9D air.=C2- I have flown many hours in =9Cbucking bronco=9D type air, but on this day, I didn =99t feel that I knew his airplane well enough to fly it in such unstable air.=C2- In spite of that, I had a GREAT day - thanks to Scott.=C2- Looking forward to many more great days, Jay Bannister Do not archive=C2- -----Original Message----- From: cookwithgas Guys: Today I took a long lunch and met Jay Bannister at my hangar to go for a short flight. Jay is familiar with the DFW area and I was a little nervous flyi ng so close to class Bravo airspace inside the Mode C veil. Jay talked me throu gh some of the procedures and I contacted the tower and away we went. We fle w around some huge towers at Cedar Hill, then over to Midway Regional for a touch and go, then back over to Grand Prairie with another chat with the tower. This was20a thrill for me and much different from flying the vacant skies over the corn fields of Wahoo, Nebraska. It was great to meet Jay who is a super guy and it was real nice of him to help ease my mind in the potentially busy DFW area. The airplane is making me so proud performing great after exceeding 131 hours today. It was a little choppy in the heat of the day, but the airplane is so sturdy and solid it was no problem at all. Have a great day, Scott in Texas 601XL/Corvair ________________________________________________________________________ Email message sent from CompuServe - visit us today at http://www.cs.com ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:10:12 AM PST US From: John Davis Subject: Zenith-List: Gascolator Wierdness - fuel turning yellow... Hi All, I'm using the gascolator that came with my quickbuild on my 601XL. It looks like an Aircraft Spruce part. The last two times I've sumped fuel from the gascolator the 100LL has been yellow in color, looks like a urine sample almost. The tanks sump fine ie 100LL blue and once I clear out the yellow fluid the engine runs fine. I've only run 100LL and no mogas. In talking with my A&P/Tech Counselor we've come to the conclusion that the color must be coming from the gascolator finish. I've removed the bowl and it does appear the finish (alodine) is dissolving ? Has anyone else seen this ? My A&P hasnt ever seen this before and he's a pretty experienced guy. Thanks, John Davis N601JD @ 7A8 601XL - Jab 3300 Burnsville, NC ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 10:35:59 AM PST US From: "T. Graziano" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Gascolator Wierdness - fuel turning yellow... John, In the beginning, I sumped a discoloration also for some time, rather brownish/yellowish in color. I attributed it to the sealant I used in installing all my fittings, a brown colored Permatex product I believe. I also use the gascolator from the kit - no problems. I've seen this too. I have an Andair gascolator. I suspected that the discolouration was coming from the rubber fuel lines, so I put some fuel in a glass bottle with a short length of fuel line. After a few days, the fuel was a brownish yellow. I have left the bottle now for several months and it hasn't got any darker, so I assume that it was something on the surface of the rubber that was being dissolved, possibly some sort of lubricant used in the manufacture. My next step will be to replace the contaminated fuel in the bottle with fresh to see if that gets discoloured. One day I may get around to doing it! 601XL ready for test flight - grounded (in the UK) Dave Johnson ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Davis" Sent: Friday, June 05, 2009 5:00 PM Subject: Zenith-List: Gascolator Wierdness - fuel turning yellow... > > Hi All, > > I'm using the gascolator that came with my quickbuild on my 601XL. I was wondering if there were any XL pilots nearby who might want to swap a ride in my Ercoupe for a ride in your XL.? I could fly out to your field or meet you at the Ercoupe convention site.? Also, if there are builders in the area who might like to show off their projects to another builder, I could help with that.? I'm building a 601 XL from a regular kit.? Just finished my second wing.? If interested please contact me off list.? I'm flying from Morgantown, WV so I guess this could also work for anyone along my route.
