Gig - you have no idea how glad we are to be in warm weather again without the
prospect of snow looming in the months ahead!
I'm glad you liked the report - I hope to have many more flying adventures in North
Texas coming up.

Took apart a $15 dwyer gauge, printed a new instrument face for it with my inkjet

Scott,
Are your only fuel pumps in the wing? As I recall the Corvair install doesn't
use an engine driven pump, correct? I guess my real question is if you lose
a pump do you also lose the ability to draw fuel from it's associated tank?

I pulled off the spinner and replaced the J-nuts I had on the front prop bulkhead
with nut plates. MUCH better.
I also started the wiring process between the Dynon, the trim servos and the buttons
on the stick.
Which other than some clean up and quick ties is the last of the wiring until the
wings go on.

Which is why in the William Wynne "suggested" design the pumps are are in-line
and draw from the tank selected by the tank selector.
Those pumps do fail. I've already replaced one an the plane has never flown. Probably
my fault I ran it to long dry. But it's not like I ran it THAT long.

Subject: | Re:Wings & Wheels Flyin at Barber 2D1 airport |
I flew my 601XL down to Barber Airport, OH for the Wings and Wheels fly in
this last Saturday.
The weather was perfect on the way down as unlimited severe clear skies.
Flew over the airport once before I saw it. How I missed the colorful
aircraft on the ground the first time I can't explain. Landed on the 2000
foot sod runway without problems. It was a bit rough due to the
corrigations left by the tractor tire tread marks. Definitely different
from the hard strips that I am used to. Met many really nice people and
builders, had breakfast, and was convinced that the trip was well worth it
due to the enthusiastic crowd that was interested in seeing the plane. I
departed in the afternoon due to Michigan weather not likely to hold up
later in the day. A bit bumpy on the 2 hour trip back. Stopped at SANDUSKY
CO RGNL Airport for fuel and dodged a little rain after that on the way back
I got to try out my ATC Anywhere Map GPS which worked as advertised and kept
me from violating controlled airspace from Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and
Akron-Canton.
All in all a very nice Saturday adventure.

Subject: | Re: Breakfast at Midlothian and a Little Glitch |
Tim and Gig:
No engine-driven pump and both pumps are mounted on the fuselage covered by the
nose of the wings. Two things I planned for before getting too far along on
the airplane were 1) BRS and 2) no fuel lines in the cockpit.
I don't want to start a debate on the merits, I am merely pointing out how I did
it. I ran all of my fuel lines under the fuselage with a valve extension inside
the cockpit to shut off fuel. I have two independent systems of tank, pump
and fuel line. They T together after check valves so I can't pump from one
tank to the other. This way, there is no firewall penetration and really no
place to mount another fuel pump on the firewall. If push came to shove I could
mount one upside down under the floor.
Another point is that since I have been flying, I never go very long without switching
tanks. I keep them about even and generally don't fly below 1/2 tank
in both tanks. I had a pretty good scare over Indiana last summer where I miscalculated
the distance and wind to my next stop. I'll never let that happen
again. Even then I kept switching down to touching the "E's."
The Corvair runs great until you stop sending fuel to it. I was pretty careful
in the design to make sure it always gets fuel.
I got the fuel pump at lunch and swung by the airport to remove the inspection
plate. I think this might be easier than I anticipated.

I am glad that you don't have the fuel under pressure in the cockpit.

Gig: Another good point. I wanted to put the fuel pumps as close to the tank as
possible to avoid vapor lock so that would mean pressurized fuel from the wings
to the engine. Thanks for making that point.

Subject: | 601HDS/Jab2200 project for sale in San Diego |
Please spread the word: I'm offering my Zenith 601HDS project
for sale. The plane was started back in 1999=2C was built from
a factory kit by-the-book by a skilled and patient craftsman in
his early thirties=2C then got stuck in the "90% done=2C 90% to go"
phase several years ago as a result of increasing demands
of my day job.
The airframe is mostly completed=2C sitting on wheels in the
garage. It has the forward-opening canopy and the wing tanks
like the XL=2C but no flaps and bungee gear. (Incidentally=2C this
design never had flutter issues=2C caveat emptor.)
I have a Jabiru 2200 engine new in crate as shipped from the
factory=2C and the FWF kit. (What it lacks in power relative to
the bigger 3300 it makes up for in greatly reduced weight...)
All told I have about 600 hours of work into it. I estimate it will
take another 200 hours of work to mount the engine and finish
the wiring and plumbing=2C which would result in a minimalist flying
configuration. With the upcoming changes in my work situation
I simply don't have the time to complete the project=2C find it a
home and get all the paperwork finished--I decided I'd rather
be flying during the little free time I have=2C so my loss is your
gain.
I invested over $30000 into the project so far. I'm asking
$24000 for everything=2C including the various special tools.
If there are no takers for the whole package by the end of
the summer I will entertain reasonable offers for parts.
