To all,
I got the scales from my local EAA and did my W & B today. Empty
weight seems to high at 820 lbs this is with a Corvair full oil,
interior installed, drained all the fuel that the drains would drain but
didn't run the engine until dry, it has wing lockers, landing nav and
strobe lights, aileron trim, full panel of steam gauges plus GPS.
The CG computes out OK but still seems heavy on empty weight. What ya
think?

Hi Gary,
I guess your engine weight explains why the Corvair approach is so
much heavier than a Jabiru 3300.
The Jab. comes from the factory weighing 178 pounds (if I remember
correctly). That includes the engine, propeller mount flange,
integral alternator, starter, integral dual magnetos, dual
distributors with spark plug wiring, 12 spark plugs, carburetor,
mechanical fuel pump, intake distribution tubing, exhaust tubing,
muffler, tail pipe, fiberglass ducts for cooling air (replace
baffling) . I think that weight also includes engine mount isolators
and voltage regulator too, but I am not sure.

And with these lucky charm brake pedals, there is no way I can get into any

That's from 60's when my mom and dad where flying gliders in Czechoslovakia, they
always prayed for a good thermals to their weather god they named "Termoska"
which is the same word for thermal bottle. So the most right charm is thermos
bottle.

There is no clear cut format required for a POH for an amateur built
airplane in the U.S. I found a POH somewhere on the web for a 601HD.
It was basically formatted the same as the POH for a Cessna 172. I
modified it for my 601XL with a Subaru engine. I have posted a copy of
the Word file Here:
http://home.comcast.net/~bryanmmartin/Documents/601XLPOH.doc
You can download this file and modify it for your airplane if you want.

David,
I made a POH for my airplane (601XL with a Corvair engine).? It is a compilation
of a lot of different POHs, but a WHOLE lot simpler than your typical certified
airplane POH.? Not a lot of CYA stuff.? I have it on WordPerfect formatted
to print landscape on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and cut down to around 5" x 7" to better
fit in the airplane.? There are 23 pages in all.? It is not totally complete.
Since I have not flown off the 40-hour test period, it doesn't have all the
numbers filled in.? I could make a pdf if you would like to review it.
The three view drawings and weight & balance pages are separate documents that
I could also reproduce as pdfs.

Jay,
I am so sorry to hear about 55 Zulu Charlie! Are you going to be at the Zenith
event in Mexico, MO this Saturday--it might be a good place to find Zenith buyers.
So too, I still need a solo endorsement for the Sabrina Mark 1. I cannot find
anyone willing to sign me off since the NTSB report came out. We have the same
engine and airframe so dual stick 55 Zulu Charlie seems perfect! Can you,
as a "Flight Instructor Sport" sign off a student for an E-LSA or just an S-LSA?
I have 127.5 hours, 10.8 solo, 5.1 solo cross-country but ZERO hours in an XL winged
craft.

Thinking about it...KFRM-KMYJ is just about the longest leg I would plan,
but it's certainly doable.

I can sign a student off for sport pilot in anything he's eligible to fly.
The endorsements are for the poilt in a specific make and model of aircraft,
not by category or class. A solo endorsement for a Zodiac 601XL would count
for anything that can be called one. I'd issue a second endorsement for the
Sabrina Mark 1, just to make sure the bases are covered.
Looks like it's okkay: the rules about pre-solo training require that the
training be given in the make and model *or a similar make and model* of
aircraft in which the solo flight is to be flown. Assuming your airplane has
the same flight characteristics as a stock 601XL, this should be okkay.

Elden,
Here it is.- I've noticed that I have changed some of the checklists and
not updated the POH.- That is something you will want to customize for yo
ur airplane anyway.- Use at your own discretion and all that stuff.- Le
t me know if you have any suggestions that could improve it or if you have
any questions.

David,
I made a POH for my airplane (601XL with a Corvair engine).- It is a comp
ilation of a lot of different POHs, but a WHOLE lot simpler than your typic
al certified airplane POH.- Not a lot of CYA stuff.- I have it on WordP
erfect formatted to print landscape on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and cut down to aro
und 5" x 7" to better fit in the airplane.- There are 23 pages in all.-
It is not totally complete. Since I have not flown off the 40-hour test pe
riod, it doesn't have all the numbers filled in.- I could make a pdf if y
ou would like to review it.
The three view drawings and weight & balance pages are separate documents t
hat I could also reproduce as pdfs.

Look again..the listing shows that the reserve has not yet been met, but not
what the reserve actually *is*. It's quite a bit higher than $10K, but less
than the $133K I paid for the airplane a year ago, much less the $147K you'd
pay AMD to get the same plane now.

Hello all my friends...

I really appreciate all the answers in the list and also off list I recieve

I didnt answer earlyer because I was thinking a lot about all your answers.

This is something great about this list... Like the good old times.

Given my-experience building the 701 as close as possible to the plans, a

-
I am going with the side senders, as the plans, but will take-the advice
from you all in account looking for a good sealed instalation.- Not forgi
ving that might need to change a sender (electric parts are never built fai

Thank you all once more.-

Subject: | Fantastic Flying on Father's Day |
I had just about the best father's day ever today. Last week I was out of town
and my wife sent my kids off to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to spend a few weeks with
my sister and her husband and their kids. They have lots of animals and a
few dogs and when I returned from out of town, I found out they even took our
dog so it was just me and my wonderful wife at home. She asked me "Why don't
we fly somewhere?"
We talked about different places to go and settled on Baton Rouge for Father's
Day. My sister lives about 10 minutes from KBTR but I would have to fly into
a Class C airport and land. Being a new Sport Pilot, that seemed a little daunting
since it has been a while since I received my Class C endorsement.
On the way from DFW I stopped by my hangar and gassed up the airplane and washed
all the dust off of the wings and readied it for a Saturday morning adventure.
Early on Saturday we flew to Nacogdoches, Texas. We used the airport courtesy
car to get breakfast, I topped off the tanks then I prepared myself for
a class C encounter and landing.
The Baton Rouge approach guy was nice enough and I verified for the first time
that my transponder AND encoder actually works. I recently had it certified
but the technician just put a little radio on the ground, turned on my transponder
and said I was "good-to-go." I paid him $75 and he gave me a sticker for
my log book and he went on his way. Not very comforting.
After being handed off to Baton Rouge tower, I received some rapid fire instructions
- something about Runway 22R and a citation departing and something about
a right base and downwind. I was completely baffled and didn't have a clear
picture of exactly where runway 22 right was anyway, all the time getting closer
to the field. Then I saw the jet lifting off the runway in the distance and
I figured I would be landing in the same direction. I still wasn't clear on
what to do so I asked the tower to repeat the landing instructions. He seemed
a little miffed with me and emphasized DOWNWIND for 22 right. I had zoomed
my GPS all the way in and I noticed for the first time that it actually labels
the runways on the screen and there they were right on front of me. Downwind
- OK I got it. I turned left and flew along 22R, then entered a right base.
During this process my wife wiped my forehead which had a large amount of sweat
forming. Then I said with my outside voice (should have kept it inside)
"I don't do these right patterns very well." My wife told me not to say things
like that when we are landing and I realized it made her very nervous too.
She was cool as a cucumber prior to this statement.
I turned right for final and nailed the landing on the widest, longest runway I
could ever imagine and slowed way before the first taxiway - Taxiway Foxtrot.
I got handed over to ground control and asked if I could just go the the first
place with 100LL and he gave me progressive taxi instructions after figuring
out I was not very savvy in this environment.
We parked at Executive aviation next to some HUGE private jet and called it a day.
The best part was that I have not heard my sister laugh with a completely
honest-to-goodness, laugh so hard you are about to cry laugh in a long time.
After they picked us up in the lobby of the Executive Aviation lounge, they had
not seen my airplane yet. We jumped in the car and drove around to the road
where you could see the airplane parking and she was looking at all the not-so-small
airplanes in the parking lot, then saw mine and just lost it! She had
tears in her eyes saying she didn't realize my airplane was so small. In her
defense, it did look ridiculously small parked between Citations and King-airs.
We had a great afternoon with the kids and their cousins that they don't see often
enough and stayed up late visiting. This morning they gave us a ride out
to the airport and walked out on the ramp with us and watched us start up, taxi,
then take off. Conversations with ground and tower went much better but I
still asked the ground guy to stay with me to make sure I didn't make a wrong
turn. He was glad to do it and completely courteous.
Overall it was a perfect weekend as the flight back was faster with a little tail
wind. Gas in Nacogdoches again, then an hour and a half back to Grand Prairie
and we were home. My wife slept most of the last leg which is a testimony
on how smooth the airplane can be. She is a very light sleeper. I reached over
to the intercom and selected "ISO" so the radio wouldn't wake her and she
didn't move for about an hour.
Father's days don't get any better than that at least for me.
Happy building,
Scott Laughlin

Well, I'll certainly be available, and hadn't planned to instruct in my
Zodiac anyway due to the insane cost of insurance, so that's not changing
any. I don't expect to instruct much, however; there's not a lot of demand
for CFIs in general around my area.
