Congrats to you for another Zenith in the air. !!!!!!!!!!!!
As for your issues, Is the prop adjustable?? is so a very easy fix. Wh
at kind of engine are you using? Heavy left wing is heard all the time.
How was your corner weights when you did you weight and balance?

Hi everyone.
Made my first flight today at KCPK just before lunch. I just finished m
y
BFR yesterday after not flying for almost two years. I have several iss
ues to resolve, but most of these should be minor. I lifted off at 60KI
AS and SLOWLY climbed out. Top speed was 105 KIAS.
The issues are prop is pitched too steep, so climb was poor.
Overheating of engine
Very heavy left wing.
If anybody has information on what was done to correct that heavy left w
ing I am all ears.
I'll work on the the cooling issues first as they are the simplest to fi
x and I hope to get some suggestions for the wing issues. First thing I
am going to look at is the aileron rigging.
Thanks to all that gave me advise these past year or so.

Congratulations.
I have a question in regards to heavy left wing. When you weighed the plane what
were the weights at each wheel?

For those of you flying.
What were your weights on each wheel and did you have a heavy left wing?

With the exception of some zinc chromate where metal meets metal not finish at
all for the firewall. This as on the advice of an A&P. He also said if I just
couldn't live without it use white paint.

Congratulations Glenn! You are off the ground and flying. What a great accomplishment.
I have my Airworthiness Certificate now and I'm right behind you up
here in Warrenton, VA. The Mid-Atlantic area is Zenith country! It was great
meeting you at Suffolk. I'm working on the Winchester Zenith Gathering and
will announce it soon.

I am really sorry I sent the whole darn list back! I thought I was on the
individual list and then realized I was on the digest. I'm just glad it
didn't have 40+ messages on it.
Reminds me of the time I slammed the door to the car just as I realized I
left the keys in the ignition...

Congratulations.
I have a question in regards to heavy left wing. When you weighed the
plane what were the weights at each wheel?

You need to put a trim tab on the right aileron angled down for a heavy left wing.
This will take the pressure off the stick as it will be doing the same thing
as you are doing manually to keep the left wing up. The trim tab always has
to be pointing down and on an aileron. The air under the wing is undisturbed,
even in a stall. If it is pointing up, it loses its effectiveness as the air
over the top of the wing starts to burble, such as in a near stall. Several have
adjusted the ailerons thinking that will work, but all it does is put the
stick off center in flight.

Gig's question about the relative weights is the next logical step
in trying to figure out the cause of the left wing low syndrome. P
factor can be eliminated because LWLS is present in projects equipped
with both right and left prop rotation engines. Whether it works or not,
disrupting the airflow with either movable aileron trim or fixed tabs
cuts down on the overall efficiency. Is weight distribution really the
culprit or is it something else?

Ron,
The air over the aileron is undistrubed even in the stall due to the wing
twist.
This link is to a video I made in my 601XL. Notice at 22 seconds the wing
root trailing edge is showing distrubance.
At 36 seconds, I was indicating approx 30 KIAS and fully stalled. The
airflow over the ailerons is not distrubed.

The trim tab should work in either direction.

Mine is a HDS, however, I had a "heavy left wing." During Phase 1
testing I loaded 175 pounds of weight (sand) in the right seat to
balance my 175 pounds. With both wing tanks 1/4 full of fuel, there was
NO heavy left wing. Landing/taxi lights are in the left wing.
I have a matronics electric trim tab on the right aileron. I find I
adjust trim about every 10 minutes as well as switching fuel tanks
periodically.
I have a Y stick and fly with my arm resting on the arm rest and two
fingers on the stick.

I have come across a set of CH650 or 601XL wings and center section that have the
fuel tanks with senders and gauges, ailerons, flaps, aileron trim tab kit,
strobes, Nav. lights, landing lights, and pitot.
They are assembled and ready to be installed. Price is $4,500. They are located
in Texas and can be trailered home by a lucky person who wants to accelerate
their project by light years.

My weights are 292 nose, 269 right main, 289 left main. My left wing is
definitely heavy when I'm solo in the left seat, but not whe I'm solo in the
right seat.

Since the firewall is galvanized steel, there's no need to paint it.
With no paint, it will be slightly lighter and there will be one less
thing that can burn. Also, the plain zinc coating will help reflect
engine heat away from the cabin.

The only thing this will accomplish is to offset the neutral position
of the stick to the left. The only way to correct a heavy left wing is
to apply a counteracting force; either with stick force, a trim tab,
ballast weight or by adjusting the rigging of the wings.

Perhaps another fractor may be the weight of the pilot. Although the question
probably wouldn't be well received, it might be interesting to know pilot
weight for those aircraft that fly with the port wing low.

Angle of arm is a consideration, but who knows, you might be able to
compensate with multiple battery locations depending on cockpit load. THIS
IS PURE SPECULATION!!!

Reminds me of the design of the original Rotorway Exec (not sure about the current,
much evolved version). They had a weight that slipped either over the right
skid when flying solo, or on an attachment hanging off the back of the cockpit
centerline when flying with a passenger to compensate.
Very simple and took just a few seconds to move as part of the checklist.

Ten Gal. leading edge fuel tanks only. Landing/taxi lights and pitot
static tubes on the left wing. Also, all my gyro instruments (3) are on
the left side of the instrument panel. Empty: 316 lb left, 302 lb
right, 56 lb tail. Hingless ailerons so I suppose a bit more trim tab
deflection than hinged version. I see 25 degrees up and down max. on
the trim tab. Does not seem to effect the TAS. That is not noticeably,
I'm sure it does to some small extent.

I suspct it would be hard. Remember, though, that my airplane is fully
loaded with lots of options, all of which add weight. I don't know how
feasible 750 is, but it's a good goal to aim for, and I'd take anything
under 800 (remember, even with long range tanks, that would give you two FAA
standard people and full tanks).

If I balance the a/c with the aileron trim, I can do left and right turns by
shifting my body around. Do I have a heavy left wing?

thanks for all the suggestions guys and gals
To answer some questions, I have an O-200 with a Warp drive 3 blade prop It was
set a 13.5 deg and tonight I backed it down to 12 deg. I am still only getting
2,000 static on the run up tonight, however now I can't hold with brakes to
do a run up at 1,700.
Weight and balance. total weight is 818#. the nose is the heaviest by far and
I can't remember the two mains, but I do believe the left wheel was heaver by
about 15#.
I am planning on re visiting the aileron rigging before this weekend and try another
test this weekend pending weather. I also have a EAA meeting tomorrow so
I'll get more info there also.
I'll submit more information as I fly more.
Thanks again
Glenn

Hi Wade,
I think 750 is a very reachable target empty weight for a CH601XL
depending on which engine you use. My plane weighs about 715 without
paint on the outside and lacking upholstery. It has a complete
Jabiru 3300 installed and a relatively complete electronic instrument
panel. If you use a heavier engine (Lyc/Cont.) Then perhaps 800
pounds might be a minimum target.

Dave and all-
From the list responses, it sounds like about 20 pounds in the right or
wrong place makes all the difference. Food for thought.
