MGL has preannounced their new XTreme EFIS over on the Yahoo user-to-user
group. Working units will be shown at Oshkosh with first deliveries towards
the end of the year. I'm pushing for final dimensions so folks can design it
into their panels now. Picture attached, more information here:

Not to take a stand on the issue, but, before I hang the wings, I'm
planning to strip out the cables, and put in pushrods. Not because I
must, but BECAUSE I CAN. They're neat, they don't require tensioning,
and RV'ers love them. Same reasoning for the BRS,the LRI, and the Dynon
goodies. Come to think of it, same reason why I fly at all. Because I
can.

Very interesting Roger. I have not quoted the entire posting just the
one sentence, hope you don't mind.
I think you might be approaching this from the standpoint that you do
not want these aileron counterbalance. If you discard that position and
look at it instead as a question of will these balances improve the
aircraft, or even a more open perspective of will they hurt it you may
come away with different opinion of the posting. We appear to be fairly
reassured that flutter is not an issue with cables at proper tension,
adding balances is not required. On the other hand they need not be
heavy or complex and then flutter mitigation would not require a
specific cable tension (although flight control would certainly require
some tension). If they are added the ailerons would certainly not
flutter even with no tension, controls disconnected (the ultimate slack)
flutter would then never be an issue, under any circumstances. Now I
regard that as an improvement. I don't think the author was advocating
for flight minus controls. If such a mod is approved, it should be
optional, but any further attempt to vilify ZBAG simply because of this
wording will only serve to further split the Zenith community.
Is there anyone here who still believes the XL WILL experience
destructive flutter with these cables properly tensioned? That's not
COULD, I specifically asked WILL. Further is there anyone here who would
object to the existence of an optional mod that would remove COULD from
the equation? If the answer to these questions is no, we should surely
not be at each others throats over it. If the answer is yes, I'd be
surprised, but the attitudes of some list members toward this has
already surprised me so no change there!

Hello, all
Over the years, I have read a number of favorable comments regarding
the tight fit tool
(http://www.tightfittools.com/index.html<http://www.tightfittools.com/ind

http://www.tightfittools.com/tigfitdrilki1.html<http://www.tightfittools.

In testing it, I noticed the drill bit wobbled significantly. I wrote
to them and they promptly sent me another tool, no charge (I told them I
would send the first tool back, and they told me to keep it...!)
The second tool arrived yesterday - same result ! I have written to
them again, but they close on Fridays.

Netheads,
I made a trip/vacation down to Nags Head NC to pick up a canopy from Debo Cox for my Zodiac XL. Debo and I started scratch building about the same time fall 2005. Debo is a Park Ranger down at Jockey Ridge and had no metal working background when he started. We watched each others progress over the years and I must say I was quite impressed with what he seemed to be achieving, take a look at his kitlog site http://mykitlog.com/debo and you will begin to understand what I am talking about.
Debo made a sweet deal on a Todds Canopy awhile back and he posted it for sale
on E-bay. I bought it and looked at the cost of shipping it or just driving down
and getting it, it was about the same and I really wanted to see his plane
with my own eyes. He has decided to go another way, He now has a Greyhound Bus
ground pounder problem (RV only not flight worthy). He is going to be selling
his Zenith Zodiac CH 601 XL and I thought you guys might like to know something
about the condition it's in.
Debo has done very meticulous work, as good as some of my better apprentices.
His attention to the details and finish are as good as what comes from Zenith.
I even told him it looked better than what factory produced.
Whoever buys this plane in it's current state will have a very quick build. Contact
Debo directly for details: Debo Cox

All this glass panel stuff is a moving target. They are all essentially
computers so they are obsolete the day you buy them. I see two approaches:
delay your decision as long as possible or just choose one and be content
with what you have.
Aside from choosing an instrument you are choosing a company. And Dynon and
MGL are different. Dynon products evolve more slowly but the docs and
software are more stabile. MGLs product line evolves rapidly so the docs can
lag. On the other hand MGL's CEO is very active on the Yahoo list and it
often happen that you can make a feature request or report a bug and it is
fixed in a few days or weeks.

Hi Tommy,
It all depends on just which bang you want.
I have a Lowrance Airmap 500 and a Garmin 296. Both work well, but
they offer different features and display size and color. I don't
know if you can buy an Airmap 500 any more - small monochrome screen
and just basic navigation functions with alkaline batteries. It does
include knowledge of all airports and Vor's etc. It works just fine.
The Garmin 296 includes color screen that is larger than the 500,
terrain avoidance features and probably some other stuff. It costs
twice as much and works just fine too.
Both the Lowrance and Garmin units will feed your autopilot and/or
Dynon HSI. The new Honeywell lacks this feature.
If you want to use your GPS for IFR you have a whole different set of
issues to consider. For sure it must be installed rather than
portable. I'm not sure if installing a portable and hooking it up to
your Dynon HSI counts or not.
I think the big features to consider are terrain, weather, and color
screen. Also, different units give more or less information about
airports. Some include taxiway drawings and pattern altitudes while
others just give the radio frequencies. The exact features probably
will tell you more than the choice of which major manufacturer you want.
The good news: You will probably like which ever unit you
choose. That is, after you spend the time and energy to really
figure out how to use it. I recommend you play with the buttons in
your car and learn the ropes before trying to use it flying. In the
air you just don't have time to play around finding the right button
for the task at hand unless you have a copilot.

Yikes! I just went out and tried mine, and it has *no* discernible
runout. That said, mine has a red plastic part (as opposed to your
yellow -- does that make a difference?); I bought it a few years ago;
and I'm using 1/4-20 threaded bits, not a collet.

Here's my 1.5 cents: I use a NavSim NavCruiser Pro for work. It's designed
for marine use but they also have an aviation version which I can't comment
on because I haven't tried it. I like the features, and it's quite
customizable, and I plan to try it out in the air when I get my plane up
there. It's quite versatile in the formats it supports. My issue is that I
haven't yet found a chart/database that I like for bush flying. Topo maps
just don't have enough contrast. You need to get your face too close to
the screen to see anything. I have not seen aeronautical charts on a
computer screen, but a friend had an AnywhereMap on an iPaq a few years ago,
and as I recall, it's nice to look at in a parking lot, but up in the air,
you still have to squint. I'd love to hear others' experience--I am
definitely not an expert in the field of aviation GPS. Actually haven't
done a biennial in a few years--too busy building the %^&*() air plane! The
other matter is picking a machine to run the software on. Sunlight-readable
screens are very pricy, I've found.
Keep the thread going.

Thanks for the replies.
I am actually looking for something that a non GPS user can learn to use fairly
quickly. The buyer for my plane asked me to buy him one. I noticed the 2000C
at ACS was $699. My friend Rick Roberts (of CH701-Suzuki fame) has one and
likes it.
What the buyer needs is something with a large screen that is easy to use.
I had an Airmap 300 back in the 90's and it was pretty good. It did lose it's
GPS signal on occasions. I read some comments on some of the lists where people
said their 2000C lost it's signal....
Just trying to get all the facts before I spend the gentleman's money.
Thanks,

Yes, it sucks, doesn't it. It is hard to make a hole in a predefined spot.
I don't know if a threaded bit would make any difference: the tool comes
with 4 collets, and they are just about the same in "wobliness level".
Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Tommy,
I'm afraid you are trying to live the impossible dream. GPS units
just don't come in easy to use. The number of issues the user must
understand and the number of choices he has just make this a device
with a really steep learning curve.
Last year I went to a safety seminar on using GPS. It was sponsored
by the FAA and AOPA Safety Foundation. It was mostly about using GPS
for IFR navigation, but many of the issues raised have application in
VFR flight too.
Perhaps the most telling point that I remember was about single pilot
IFR flight. This was a very common event a few decades ago. One of
my friends flew hard IFR often in his Globe Swift - a twitchy plane
with only 2 hours of fuel. He thought nothing of it. Today, single
pilot IFR is considered a safety hazard - particularly if you don't
have a working autopilot. The reason? GPS. These little gizmos
take so much attention that a pilot can't fly the plane and twiddle
the GPS at the same time.
Which ever GPS you select, I think you should plan on spending many
hours getting familiar with it. That way you can program it on the
ground before takeoff and when you need to do something to it in the
air you know exactly which button to push to get what you want.

Brand doesn't matter as long as you can access the Windows CE and add software
to the SD card.

Subject: | First flight of N12GT |
Hi all,
Yesterday saw the first flight of N124GT, a 601XL with corvair power built
according to the standard William Wynne configuration. -It went once arou
nd the pattern without incident. -I watched from the ground, but will be
eager to play my part next weekend. -It could not have been done without
tremendous help from the people at Zenith, William Wynne and friends, membe
rs of EAA chapter 133 down here in Fort Lauderdale, countless visitors to t
he hangar, and the people here on this forum (where I am an avid lurker).
Emotions run high here sometimes, and there are occasionally people with a
talent for getting others inflamed, but let's remember and celebrate what w
e all have in common, for it is considerable. -Keep working towards your
dreams.
Gary

Subject: | Re: 601XL take-off distance |
Bob,
I have about 190 landings/takeoffs from my grass 1500 x 60 (approx) farm
strip* and hope to base it on the farm in a month or two. It presently
is at KPHT (Paris, Tn; in our EAA hanger)
*Before I retired here in Tennessee from SoCal. I called the
Tennessee Dept of Aeronautics and asked them how people in Tennessee go
about cutting a strip so they can fly their own airplanes from their own
property. The answer was "most people in Tennessee use a bulldozer."
(within about 10 miles of my farm there are at least 6 farm strips
(that I know of) that are not on any map.)
The strip is rough and my takeoffs are slightly down hill (about a 20 -
30 ft drop total for the entire length)
At a gross weight of about 1125 lbs ((I have yet to load'er up with deer
corn to gross weight for takeoffs from the farm (deer corn - to feed the
deer in case of........ ))** on a 90 deg F hot day (density alt of
about 1500 ft) at zero headwind, I am airborne in about 500 ft. About
100 feet from the end of the strip are about 75 ft trees which I easily
clear. With a tail wind though, the trees are "imposing" - the max tail
wind I have taken off with has been less than 10 kts. I have 6x600
tires/wheels, but the standard 5x500 should work well also.
* *I have counted as many as 14 deer grazing on my farm near the
runway. Have only bagged two of them around here in five
years - with my truck - both times a $1500 AWG!

Subject: Zenith-List: 601XL take-off distance
Does anyone have an approx. lift-off distance and distance to clear
50' for a 601XL with Jab 3300 and wood prop? This is for a grass field.
Thanks, Bob

Re my previous report on my tightfit drill: I've always used the threaded
drills. That could account for my relative lack of wobble.

Yes, it sucks, doesn't it. It is hard to make a hole in a predefined spot.
I don't know if a threaded bit would make any difference: the tool comes
with 4 collets, and they are just about the same in "wobliness level".
Thanks for taking the time.

Yikes! I just went out and tried mine, and it has *no* discernible
runout. That said, mine has a red plastic part (as opposed to your
yellow -- does that make a difference?); I bought it a few years ago;
and I'm using 1/4-20 threaded bits, not a collet.
