    Subject: Trio EZ-Pilot autopilot
Yesterday I finally tried flying with the Trio EZ-Pilot installed in my leased Tecnam plane. It was a humbling experience. This gizmo works so well it makes me wonder why I ever thought I could fly, and particularly navigate, by myself without electronic help. It is a single axis autopilot that works in three or four different modes depending on how you count. In my plane it is connected to a Garmin 296 GPS, but I suspect it will work with almost any aviation GPS. It will TRACK the programmed GPS flight plan including turns at waypoints. It will INTERCEPT the programmed GPS track to get you on the planned ground track from an excursion (like after takeoff and flight around the traffic pattern). It works in COURSE mode to hold a ground track when not using a GPS programmed flight. All the above modes work on ground track basis rather than aircraft attitude in the air. Finally, when not getting GPS information it works as a wing leveler. When the autopilot or servo is turned off you can't even tell it is there. When it is in operation controlling the ailerons you can easily override it with a little more than usual force on the stick. In all my years (around 40) of flying small planes this is the first time I have flown a plane with a working autopilot. Most of the rental planes I flew that had old style A/P installed just went crazy when you turned it on. This one really works well. It is easy to learn and easy to use. I am happy to recommend it to anyone planning to do enough cross country flying to justify the moderate cost (under $2000). Paul XL grounded

Thanks for the pirep, Paul! I'm thinking about using it on my sonex, due to the cost and weight. -------- Jon McDonald Building Sonex #1287 Thinking ahead about a Zenith CH 701 :D Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=253295#253295

Ed and all- By PETA I take it you're referring to People promoting the Eating of Tasty Animals. T-shirts are available- look online. Actually, they're more airworthy than oven worthy. For as big as they are, it's amazing how fast they fly and how agile they are dodging the trees in our thick woods. Look just past where I mow- they boogie through that stuff at up to 35smph for short distances. They can also run as fast as a deer for short distances. On the other hand, one of the favorite foods of the wild turkey is bugs. That's where turkey scratches come from- they're digging up the forest floor looking for grubs, slugs, and beetles. As the saying goes, you are what you eat. I just think it's cool they stopped by my place. I've lived up here for 30 years and haven't seen wild turks for 25. Tims- I don't think it's anything intentional on Zenith's part, just a slight difference in the cockpit dimensions of the HD/HDS and XL. Reduce the length of the 815mm square tubing by 50-60mm and leave everything else the same. The best plan of action is to fabricate the front portion of the rail and cut the 815 to fit your rear cockpit tube. Friends, It wasn=99t supposed to turn out this way.=C2- I dreamed of buildi ng an airplane and flying it wherever and whenever I felt the urge to reli sh the joy of flight.=C2- I fulfilled the dream of building, but my dete riorating physical condition has made the flying part of the dream no long er a possibility.=C2- This has come as an extremely difficult, heart bre aking and demoralizing realization, but I have accepted it. Therefore, my Zodiac 601XL, N2630J, =9CLil Bruiser=9D,=C2- is for sale.=C2- It has flow for a little over an hour, so it is virtua lly a new airplane with a virtually new William Wynne built Corvair engine .=C2- It is registered as EAB, and is fully LSA compliant. The test pilo t that flew it was very complementary of the airplane, its handling=C2- and its performance; so I have every confidence in the airplane.=C2- It was built for fun and I am sure it will deliver. If you have any interest, or know of someone who has an interest in buying my airplane, please contact me directly for more information.=C2- My e- mail address is jaybannist@cs.com ,=C2- Phone 214-351-4757.
