I did have a chance to talk over the phone with Mark Townsend during the Zenith
Dinner.
Later on, Sebastien told me it was so crowded, the Zenith staff had to eat outside.
It was a great Air Venture although short for me (two days) my dream of flying
my first US solo in the aircraft I built is closer to reality...
I am heading up to flight train with Jay in MN Tuesday!
An EAA Sport Aviation Magazine writer was very excited about the news as well--there
may be a story in the works... I don't get a copy of that particular
magazine so if any of you see Jay or me mentioned in an upcoming issue please
post the details here on the list.
Thanks!

Subject: | NAS BOLTS: Use with AN Nuts |
Here is a technical question for you: Can NAS bolts be used with AN nyloc nuts.
One bolt hole on my spar plate connection was reamed slightly to large by about
1/64". I don't really wish to go up to the next size AN bolt even though it
is allowable per Zenith. My plan is to use a close tolerance oversize NAS bolt
in lieu of the AN bolt. I have researched and found that the NAS bolt is actually
stronger than AN bolts, however due to the critical nature of this connection,
I want to make sure that I don't overlook any details.
BTW in the case that anyone else finds themselves in the same situations oversize
bolts are extremely expensive, and are extremely hard to find.
Try 50-70 dollars a piece for an AN 6-11. Yes that is EACH bolt 50-70 dollars.

Subject: | Re: NAS BOLTS: Use with AN Nuts |
Let me correct my post above... They do not make oversize AN bolts, however they
do make oversize NAS bolts albeit all but impossible to find. i.e.
NAS6606-11X
660 is the series and means that it is a close fit, 6 means it is a 3/8 bolt, 11
means it is 11/16 and the X is the IMPORTANT part meaning it is 1/64" oversize.
There is also a Y designation which means it is 1/32" oversize.
Take your time while reaming. I'll still be discussing this further with Zenith
to make sure that everything is A-OK but any input regarding the compatibliity
between NAS and AN bolts and nuts is appreciated.
Thanks

Don't feel too bad, some days they just get too busy,or are hung up on
other potential customers. I went over there three times, wearing my
Zenith cap, and the only one who talked to me was (I think) Sebastian's
young son. Nice kid.
I did, however, have a great time at WW's presentation, and then a half
hour or so picking WW and staff's brains. His whole crew was cordial,
and informative. Picked up a new manual, and a black hub.
Didn't make the Z-dinner, but went to some incredible restaurant way
out in the boonies, the other side of Omro. One of the best steaks you
could ask for. Another interesting spot was the Brooklyn Grill, 6th and
Main. New York gangster motif, even with a Thompson on the wall, and
stuff named after Mafiosi. "Gimme a Philly cheese steak, and nobody

And for those of you who camped out in the rain and bugs, the "Y" 3

computer, shuttle bus, showers, towels, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Dan,
Here are the plan updates (see attachment on the Forum web site). I think the
L Angles (stringers) could be made from .016 or .025 with standard A4 P 40 or
50 should work. Call Zenith and get the actual details.

I picked one up at Oshkosh and read it in the tent during the rain storms. GOOD
STUFF! It is a compilation of 10 Corvair Flyers experiences and has very little
of the ever most humble WW in it. The Corvair movement lives on.
If you are building a Corvair Powered airplane, you want this book.

First I should specify this is for a 601 HD.
Second, an AN 6 fastener is anywhere from .0363-.375 in. or + 0.000/-.012....
Problem here is my plate, actual reamed hole dimension, which I intended to ream
to .375in is actually slightly ovaled with the greatest dimension measuring
approximately .389 inches.
So, to ensure a tight fit the only other option I can come up with is use a 1/64"
oversize bolt, or use an AN7. An AN7, though acceptable is at the very very
limits of allowable, since the edge distance now becomes critical...
Yes, a standard AN6 bolt should be a dollar or less, and AN7 should be a dollar
or less. an NAS6606-11 should be about 3 or so dollars and BUT an NAS6606-11"X"
goes for about fifty bucks.

Paul and all-
I was at WW's presentation, too- very entertaining and laid back. I
stood outside the workshop talking to the guy whose XL was on display at
the AirCorvair tent. Afterwards, I went to the 'Vair tent, talked to WW
about final installation and timing issues and bought a ZenVair hat
(Along with the final piece I need for my installation). I figure I
killed three birds with one stone that way. It's getting pretty bad.
There are so many 'Vair variations now it's easy to get into a verbal
battle over the relative pros and cons.
Best forum of the show in my opinion was Experimental Aircraft
Registration. Don't miss this one next year, guys+gals.
If anyone has or knows someone that has a 13" RV spinner they want
to get rid of, e-mail me off list.
We stayed at the Ripon College dorms. One hot (Breakfast) and a cot
for $8/day.
Back to the real world- have to bale the lawn.

Not a problem here.....
I think i have used about a dozen cans of zinc and some other type that Zenith
likes.... The Zinc is easier to use but not good for people to breath. Please
use it in a well ventlated area and Do Not breath any. Read the MSDS on Zinc
Chromate it is nothin to play with.. Just friendly advice.
Thanks
