I fly a 601XL, and built my canopy side rails 20 mm higher than called for
in the plans. What was called out as 75 mm height is now 95 mm. This has
worked out very well. I have 27 mm mimimum edge distance from the nearest
mounting hole instead of 7mm that it would have been and I have good head
clearance with the original 601 canopy. My original thought was that the 7
mm edge distance was too close for a plexiglass 5/16" hole. I was afraid of
cracking the canopy. I drilled my canopy with a 1/2" step drill with very
light force at room temperature. The bit was allowed to warm the site as it
was cutting and the bit was held perfectly perpendicular to the curvature of
the area. No cracks after 2.1/2 years.

      > I see little advantage to change the wing incidence if you already have
601 parts. The angle change of 2 degrees is to make it easier to see over
the nose. You need different front side skins, the four parts that make up
the seat bottom, arm rest, rear wing attachment parts and more. The canopy
switch might be worth it though. I really like the way it looks. It depends
on how deep your pockets are and how tall you are. 8)

      Hi all
just want some real life exp before I cut the area and install.
I am planing to install a Garmin 495 with Gizmo at the top, then a Icom A-210 below,
then a Garmin TX below the radio., then the Jab throttle, choke and heater
      at the bottom.

In theory it all fits but in practice, will the engine controls get in the way
      of the TX?

Has anyone used this set up in an XL dash?
      Chris

      Hi Dan,

Thanks for the comment. Hopefully next posting I'll be able to spend more time
making video of the wing lockers, instruments, etc rather than bouncing around
all over. I know some have expressed concern that the lockers were worrisome
however they sure don't look like there is any movement of them while in flight.

      Hang in there.

      Hi Chris,

I installed the full engine and controls before considering where my
electronics might wind up. This worked well. The engine controls
are very sensitive to location, but the electronics are pretty
      flexible as to exact location.

When installing the electronics you will need to design and implement
some sort of structure to attach the various boxes to. This may
take up some room - particularly between instruments and
      radio/electronic stacks.

Of course, all of this stuff must stay clear of the cables and other
stuff needed to control the engine. You will need space to service
      the engine controls too.

My solution (mostly copied from other people's approaches) was to cut
two large inspection holes in the top skin between the instrument
panel and fire wall. This allows easy access from the top and also
some access to the very low spots on the instrument panel from the bottom.

      See the picture below.

      Good luck,

       Chris,

I have pretty much this same set up; except Narco transponder and controls for
Carvair engine. It works for me.? See drawing. & photo.

      Chris,

I have the exact same radio stack you list. The x-ponder is a 320A.

Fits perfectly with the Throttle, Mixture and Carb Heat under the stack.
