I was concerned about edge distance on a rib flange as I was drilling
through the nose ski on the (CH601-HD) centre wing.
Unable to see the flange without disassembling the work in progress, I
thought about different possibilities.
I could reach the spot through the lightening holes and feel the area with
my fingers, but that wasn't enough.
A digital photo would also not be precise enough to reassure me.
So I thought of using an old trick: to make an impression with play-doh.
But, nuts!, I was fresh out of play-doh.
So I resorted to ...bread!
Se attached photo. Thirteen mm between hole centre and flange edge.
Great tool, versatile, cheap, and you can eat it when the work is done.
Cheers
Carlos

Subject: | Cowl Fitting ( the stuff nightmares are made of) |
Hi All
I'm trying to fit the cowl (601XL Jab 3300 with the Jab Cowl)
Look at the attached pictures When I get the thing lined up so the air intakes
line up and are symmetrical the centering of the prop shaft is off.. WAY OFF
Ok so which is it Center the prop and not center the air intakes?? (seem bad
for cooling to me) or center the air intakes (and it looks like *&*^%^&*)
OK someone whos been here before guide me

Hi Larry,
I think I had a similar problems with my cowl. I don't remember the
details (heck, I barely remember what I had for lunch) but I found a
good picture that might help you out.
After getting the crank shaft opening set up I had misalignment of
the top and bottom fiberglass pieces that looked really awful. I
decided to fill in the gaps with flox and epoxy filler. The flox
came in a composite training kit from Aircraft Spruce. Flox is just
a nice pile of chopped up fiber (cotton, I think). The kit was a
great purchase even though intended for Rutan builders and their
special techniques. I haven't yet flown my plane, but I think the
filler will hold up just fine as well as holding paint just as well
as the rest of the cowl. Please see the pictures below.

...so that's what they meant when they said it takes a lot of bread to build
an airplane!

I had a similar problem as well with the misalignment so I used a heat gun to
twist/bend and teak it.I'm very happy with the result and it was quick to do.
Cheers
