My DMV experience: In 1957 - just a few years ago for me - I was
assigned by the Air Force to California. I decided to get a California
drivers license since I would be there a few years. I had a 1957
Pontiac convertible that I had installed seat belts in. The inspector,
a gray haired old guy about my present age, got in but refused to use
the passenger seat belt. I buckled mine. I got a perfect score on the
test, but lost one point for using dangerous unauthorized equipment -
seat belts. Time and thinking changes,

ALSO found enough A4 hardware to do the job, but not what's called

Hi Bill,
You should build according to the plans. What got shipped from
Zenith or any other vendor is a somewhat random process. You
shouldn't change the design of your plane because some kid reached
into the wrong bin for parts.
It is easy to order AN hardware from Aircraft Spruce or a number of
other sources. In some cases Zenith will send you replacement parts
for free. In other cases they will charge you considerably more than
you can get it elsewhere and charge you shipping on top of that.
Good luck,
Paul

Subject: | 601XL Rotax 912 parts |
Listers,
I have for sale:
1. Rotax 912 ULS Muffler assy from a 601XL Czech Built. The stainless steel muffler
is in good shape. Engine had 380 hrs on it. I bought the engine from
another owner and it will not fit with my Rotax Ring Mount installation. I will
sell it for $200.00 OBO plus shipping. The new muffler assembly I just bought
from Zenith was $900.00. Shipping from Mexico, MO to Anniston, AL was about
10.00 UPS. This muffler is for the 601XL bed mount setup. It will NOT fit
the Ring mount setup. If it is as not as advertised, I will refund your money
and take it back, less shipping charges. Just thought someone might have a
use for it.
2. Rotax 912 Carb Air Box. I used the Zenith setup and the air box will not fit.
This thing costs over $1000.00 from Rotax. I will sell it for $150.00 OBO
plus shipping charges. Again, I have no use for it and thought some builder
somewhere would have a use for it. I don't know what the shipping charges would
be but it will be less than the muffler, I'm sure.

AN-4 are very up to the job Bill,
But if the bolts don't get in the way between strut, attach plate welds
on top and the tire tread under the fork, you're AN5s are probably good
enough.
I couldn't find enough space between welds and the hole pattern for the
forks to use AN5.

Larry-
I wound up with a PILE of AN-5 and AN-6 bolts that aren't called out
anywhere on the plans. I finally found 18 sets of AN-4-5 that worked quite
well. Nose gear is complete; carving out the right main at the moment. Had
to use a cutoff wheel in my circular saw to cut the 1/4" aluminum to size.
Looks like I'll have to jack the cradle up to install the wheels and brakes
when the time comes.

All-
I thought I was corresponding directly with Larry, but I guess not.
This was the most deceiving picture I've ever taken. When I looked at
it, I thought "Oh my God, I put the fork in backward, and the two pieces
separated". All parallax. If I took a picture 90 degrees to the side, it
would look just like the print.

Subject: | My Panel is back and In!!! |
Hi All
I just got my panels back from the silk screener. They turned out great!!!
I did try that decal system that makes decals from the special laser printer paper
but I never could get results that I liked. I know other have had great success
with it but I couldn't get it to work well for me.
I opted to send the panels out to get the markings silk screened on.
I laid out the art myself on a full size CAD and made and Illustrator file and
the silk screen boys took it from there. Total cost was $220 dollars and only
a couple of days!! One of the advantages of being close to Chicago, The silk
screeners were only 5 blocks from my office.
Pictures below!!

On the XL the plans call for AN4-10A on the front gear fork. That is with
the fork doubler. There are six bolts, 4 at the corners and two left and
right with the center line of the side holes 8 mm in from the edge.
