Jay,Rick and Gerry- I installed my eyeball vents in my panel so at this point, I can't direct couple the vents and NACA scoop. Also, I mounted the NACA vents higher up, in the space between the upper longeron and upper L angle brace. My reasoning was to (1) keep the length of vent tubing to a minimum, (2) provide easy access when the top front skin was removed, and (3) leave as little as possible hanging in the "Foot tunnel" to be kicked off by an excited passenger. (Or pilot, for that matter)! With only 1/4" difference between the NACA scoop and eyeball vent ODs to compensate for, I can either remove some of the wire as suggested by Gerry or build up the OD of the eyeball vent using 1/16" rubber or foam. I'll make up my mind after the vent tubing comes in from ACS. Thanks for your input. Just fab a few pieces and fasten the eyeball directly to the NACA outlet. I think I used .062" for the face bracket and .025" for the transition piece. Jay Bannister All- NACA air inlet scoop is 2" OD, eyeball vent is 1-1/2". Any leads for a reducer other than the aviation department at Home Depot? Bill Naumuk Townville, Pa. HDS N601MG/Corvair 95%

I have an older 601 HD kit that I built, s/n 6-1911 that I have been flying around for 3 1/2 years now, and would like to know if anyone has changed the rims and tires for more rough field use. I know this would also mean making wider forks, at least on the mains, since they will only allow for 4.80x4 tires. Also, the kit came with thin aluminum 1 piece cast rims with x spoke pattern, that I was told came from an Italian motor scooter manufacturer, with "Grimica" 1.5x8 on them, and that they might not hold up on rough fields? Can someone with a 601xl tell me how wide the front fork is and what size tire it will take, I know the fork on a 701 is 8" ID, but that is a bit of an overkill anyway if anyone has been through this I would like to hear what you did so I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks Tom McCarthy Zenith 601HD, N514TM 200hours Kolb Firestar, N414TM 545 hours

Thanks Dave The fuse covers haven't been installed yet Probably one of the last things I'll do before I fly Larry DaveG601XL wrote: > Larry, > > Your panel looks great! Tom, My 601HDS, #6-4117, started 1999, uses Matco 8.0 x 3.5 wheels. The O.D. of the S-83 Michelin tires is 15 inches and is intended to roll easy on soft ground. I believe this is about right. I don't think the Matco's are available any more, but there must be a good source for the size somewhere. My Michelin tires are motor scooter tires and rated 375 lbs with safety factor that makes for 485 lbs at 36 psi and 30 mph. according to Michelin. I use 21.5 psi and touch down nearer to 50 mph. If you're working 4.8 wheels, I'd recommend you find the Matco or equal out there that works with a hydraulic brake system. I seriously like what I have as they roll easily on damp sand. The forks are 123mm wide by 222mm axle center to top. http://www.macsmachine.com/images/wheelfairings/full/fairingbrakefit.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/wheelfairings/full/wpantforkntire.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/gear/full/gfairingleftside.gif Larry McFarland 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com mccarthy wrote: > > I have an older 601 HD kit that I built, s/n 6-1911 that I have been > flying > around for 3 1/2 years now, and would like to know if anyone has > changed the > rims and tires for more rough field use. The front fork on the XL is about 145mm wide inside and is designed for a 5X5 aircraft tire.
