Chris a subsidiary question. My copy of 6-ATO-1 shows the door as a flat
panel, but some of the photos I've seem indicates diagonal folds in the
door (presumably to reduce drumming) I would appreciate clarification.

Malcolm,
You are correct that the bottom hatch ZAC delivers is domed by the addition of
folds going out to the corners. I have found that it does not do much for oil-canning.
I put some additional L-angle stiffeners down it and it helped tremendously.

FYI... When I installed it I did away with the hinge at the front. It looked to
me that it would just be in the way when you had to actually work in there.

Hello Malcom,
-
I will try to explain what I did with my 701's doors...- Just like the ol
d builders say: "If you modify just a little the building plans, you add se
veral hours more to the building process".
-
I had the original doors =ECn the kit,-my idea was always to-build the
plane as close to the plans as posssible,- BUT there were in the list the
first photos of the bubble doors...- So we decided to use-our same doo
rs and just bend some more the center tube-to increase the-shoulder are
a, GREAT! we did it and when installed the cabin was very confortable,- w
e smiled.-
-
The problem was that when we tried to install the (kits) doors holder on th
e wing,- the bending of the doors will not let it lock. so the door will
not hold open in place.-
Then we decided to put the gas springs, look around to find a pair, design
and make the custom support, etc...-
So just to make a little bend in the door,-added lots of hours to the sim
ple door instalation...--
-
The good side is that the door works great and the cabin is wider.- Hope
this helps.
-

David
Thanks for this. I have made the bottom door and it works very well so I
don't feel like putting it in the bending brake again and risking the fit!
I had thought about stiffening angles so I will go down that road.
Thanks also to Gary and Gig, all contributions are very welcome this side of
the pond.

Completed 601XL for sale, or Id be willing to sell the airframe and FWF separately.
Due to a major employment change, I MUST sell my XL project. It is complete, painted,
registered and ready for AW inspection. (Well it was ready for inspection.
Now it needs the Zenith upgrade kit).
$28,000 takes the entire plane. Or, $20,000 for the airframe and $10,000 for the
FWF.
That would be an entire completed airframe with upholstery, paint & instruments
for less than the cost of a quick build.
The FWF is a William Wynne Corvair Conversion with 12 taxi hours and no flight
hours.
Check out building photos and videos of the running engine at: www.flickr.com/photos/n56dv/sets
The plane is hangered at Livermore, California (LVK).
Contact me at: richvetterli@yahoo.com or call me at 925-931-9303.
Thanks,
Rich Vetterli
