Subject: Zenith-List: Alieron Gussets
Can anyone help direct me to drawings for Alieron Gussets 65W2-5 and 65W2-6
?
I am doing the mods on the left wing and the gussets weren't supplied in the
mod kit. I seem to recall seeing the drawings for these gussets some time
ago, being a modification to the alierons.
If I can get the size and thickness of these gussets I'll make them.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Rivet squeezer and gun/bucking bar are not the only way to drive solid rivets to
the spar. I'm using an harbor press, it works well and is the cheaper method.
I created a jig that holds the spar in the right position and angle in relation
to the harbor press.

Subject: Zenith-List: Upgrade kit and Solid Rivets
So I've got the upgrade kit on hand. I've removed the solid rivets from the center
section and the left wing and I've removed the angle on the top of the wing
spar.
Soon I'm gonna have to put it all back together and I need some advice.
There's no one around that has a rivet gun and I've never bucked rivet one, so
I'm in the position of having to buy the tools anyway
I'm actually leaning toward a rivet squeezer instead of a gun/bucking bar.
it seems like the learning curve is way smaller with a squeezer than a gun, and
since I'm teaching myself on my spars I'd like to just get it right the first
time
The squeezer shown is a Atlantic Aircraft Tools Tandem Alligator 3" Deep Rivet
Squeezer 1/4" Rivet Set Dies Its a tandem cylinder unit which means it has enough
oomph to squeeze the spar rivets and the jaws have enough room to reach around
the angles at the top of the spar
used its about $300
Comments ??? Concerns???

Subject: | Re: Zenith-List Digest: 4 Msgs - 02/12/10 |
Larry,
I was in the same boat as you. I didn't want to purchase a 4X gun because I
will never use it again! I removed the leading edge completely, then removed
the spar from the wing. I used a drill press to remove all of the rivets.
That way, they all came out nice and straight. I used a drill stop to remove
the maximum amount of material from the rivet. They came out with one or two
taps with the hammer and punch. Seeing that the spar was out of the plane, I
replaced the entire 10 ft extrusion from end to end. I drilled out the holes
and placed the rivets in the holes, then taped over the rivet head. I took
the spar to my local FBO and I had an A&P do the rivets with his tools. He
had lots of experience with rivets that big. This procedure may seem
bizarre, but it saved me a lot of frustration trying to remove those rivets
with a hand drill. I now have a perfect job. I'm riveting the spars back on
next weekend.
