Here is a link showing the tools I used, 1 ton Arbor Press, 3 lb rawhide hammer,
faces from one of the hydraulic squeezers from ACS, and a rubber cushion.

Subject: | Landing gear turn around |
Hi all wise ones,
I have 601XL with 183Hrs on the hobbs. I am busy with the upgrade, and
decided to turn the gear around, flat side forward. I am hoping that the
transistion to flight would be smoother, and I will be able to hold the
nose
gear off, for longer when landing. We have many very rough fields that
we
land on, and I have bottomed out the nose gear on several occasions.
I believe that the latest plans call for the gear installed this way in
anycase. Could someone please confirm this, as my plans are rather old.
Now
that I have turned the gear around, I tested it by standing on the step,
and
well, now it tips onto it's tail. Now unfortunately I did not test this,
before turning the gear around. What I am trying to say is, is this
going to
be a problem, as I currently have the wings off, the prop off, and the
spar
carry thru is completely out of the plane. All of these components are
in
front of the gear CoG.
Is there anyone out there with the wings off, and still has the landing
gear
flat side to the rear, that can stand on the step, to see if it tips
backwards. Any help would be appreciated, as I would rather put the
landing
gear back, before I put the wings back on.
Thnx
Jonathan Starke

Hi Johnathan,
My copy of the plans shows the flat side forward. There is not a problem
standing on the step with the engine and wings installed.
I think you will find the nose a lot lighter on the ground with the gear
installed this way.

Jonathan,
I have my gear flat side forward (correct according to my 2008 plan set).
My wings are off at the moment. I do have the prop, O-200 and the center
section in and can't say I noticed any tipping.
I can check tomorrow when I get to the hangar if you like. Can't help with
the flat side to the rear though.
Cheers
Peter

This will be great Peter, the only difference then will be the motor
weight, I have a Rotax 912S, but if you see no tipping with the wings
off, then I should be OK. (Maybe need to go on a diet as well, but that
is another issue!)

Subject: | NOT a smoking gun, but a heads up |
Hi All,
I have removed my landing gear, after 183Hrs on the hobs, to turn it
around, and found that the front three rivits at the mounting point, on
the underside, that goes into the landing gear channel. (At the very
edge iof the bracket) had lost their heads. This was the case on both
sides of the fuselage. There was no sign of direct movement, between the
landing gear and the channel, but there must have been movement between
the rubber (14/inch thick) and the bracket, that holds the landing gear
in place.
I have replaced the rubber with 1/4 rubber as before, but where it meets
the underside channel, I have instlled a 1/4 inch softer rubber compond,
that will NOT rub off the rivets heads, I hope. I have also re-notched
(Because I have turned the gear around) the gear more accurately, and
hope that there will be no more movement.
Just a heads up, for those installing the gear, and for those thinking
of turning the gear around, like I have done.
Hope this helps
Jonathan
