I called Zenith and they said there was no problem having notches fore and aft on the gear. By the way, if I have luggage in the plane, I do have the tail drop when stepping onto the wing... unless I do it quickly. However, I have no problem keeping the nose off the ground during my landing and 100 feet thereafter on roll out. -------- Scott Thatcher, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 601XL with Corvair, Registered as E-LSA N601EL, EAA203 42 hours and climbing. It was very stable. Have fun! (Maybe need to go on a diet as well, but that is another issue!) Jonathan ----- Original Message ----- From: Peter W Johnson Sent: Monday, February 15, 2010 8:37 AM Subject: RE: Zenith-List: Landing gear turn around Jonathan, I have my gear flat side forward (correct according to my 2008 plan set). My wings are off at the moment. I do have the prop, O-200 and the center section in and can't say I noticed any tipping. I can check tomorrow when I get to the hangar if you like. Can't help with the flat side to the rear though. I am busy with the upgrade, and decided to turn the gear around, flat side forward. I am hoping that the transistion to flight would be smoother, and I will be able to hold the nose gear off, for longer when landing. We have many very rough fields that we land on, and I have bottomed out the nose gear on several occasions. I believe that the latest plans call for the gear installed this way in anycase. Could someone please confirm this, as my plans are rather old. Now that I have turned the gear around, I tested it by standing on the step, and well, now it tips onto it's tail. Now unfortunately I did not test this, before turning the gear around. What I am trying to say is, is this going to be a problem, as I currently have the wings off, the prop off, and the spar carry thru is completely out of the plane. All of these components are in front of the gear CoG. Is there anyone out there with the wings off, and still has the landing gear flat side to the rear, that can stand on the step, to see if it tips backwards. Any help would be appreciated, as I would rather put the landing gear back, before I put the wings back on. Now that the center section is back in and the fuselage is no longer at risk of being distorted. While the wings off there is no better time. In case this happens, the factory has a skid that prevents the tie-down from hitting the ground. It looks like they expected 2 people to try to step up at the same time. I wouldn't worry about it.
