Altho I am not a 601/650 XL builder, I am a happy Zenith customer. Perso
nally I have had doubts about the strength of the XL airframe since the
Yuba City incident. The others could be explained away as possible pilot
error... With that said the Heintz clan has now gone the extra mile to
try to restore the faith of builders and future builders of the XL serie
s. If they are really confident in the original design and now over the
top confident in the modified design the ultimate way to showcase that i
s a publicity 'stunt' kinda like they did building a 701 at an airshow a
nd flew it that same week..... What I propose is something similar....
Get a bunch of us builder together at Oshkosh, we pitch in and buy a win
g and fuselage kit, have it delivered to the Zenith booth, spend a few d
ays assembling it in front of the crowds, and then flip it over and load
it up with sandbags to destruction. If it holds up past the design limi
t that will put to rest all concerns and Zenith will get a ton of free
publicity out of it. I for one will chip in for my share and I will atte
nd Osh to help in the build. The guys and gals at Zenith really need a s
hot in the arm to get them back on the road to viability...

Ladies and Gents,
Reading everyone's comments about what should be done to put the XLs/650
s on sound footing and how it should be done -- shows great concern.
I think that you all will agree with me that the Heintzs have performed
to the utmost of their ability! It sounds like these tasks, litigation,
etc., has strained their financial position.
Now the FAA is asking for more blood?
There is an old adage that states "You can't fight city hall" -- the FAA
being city hall.
We need someone with lots of horsepower and expertise to advise and ramr
od this project.
He/she won't be cheap!
Also, I agree that in order to placate the FAA another airframe will hav
e to be destroyed in testing.
The successful outcome of this project will benefit us all because we'll
have product that can be flown, sold without a heavy financial loss and
liability, plus the Heintzs will remain in business to support us.
There are many 601/650 drivers that have offered, on this site as well a
s the Zenith Aero, monetary support and willingness to act as gophers in
getting this problem resolved!
This is going to cost a lot of money!
I, for one, will throw my hat in the ring to volunteer as a gopher (if n
eeded) and will support the cause financially.
