I 'speculated' as such back in 2008. The problem with homebuilt aircraft design
is that the designer is generally tasked with making a design that limits the
ability of a builder to create "fatal flaws" in the construction process. It
is one thing to design a plane to be built safely on an assembly line by trained
aircraft manufacturers, quite another if the assembler is an accountant (with
all due respect to the mechanical ability of accountants etc).
Rutan homebuilts, with all of their ~flaws, have remarkably few instances where
poor construction methods in the garage have translated to a fatal failure.
In other words, so long as the LongEz or Varieze builder attempted every step
in the building manual, s/he can feel very safe that the plane won't come apart.
Not so with the 601XL.
